This is no way a pop at him as over the last 6 or so months he has been outsanding for us and is my new fave player BUT has anyone else noticed how deep he plays?

As we are not killing teams off this can't be helping when it comes to us being put under late pressure and greer basically playing in his own area.

think you're picking the shit out of the sugar... he's been immense IMO. I don't think the problem is him dropping deeper, just the team as a whole not killing games off and inviting pressure.

He has been immense i agree but like you say inviting pressure is a problem and him playing deeper is part of that imo.I would like to see us do what other teams do and maybe put another defender on when we are winning with him being able to sweep up behind.

The whole team needs to learn how to push up the field in unison. I've noticed Greer often sits deeper to provide an outlet if needs be. Unfortunately it gets used quite often and the ball punted long, which doesn't always help matters.

Despite our midfield improving a lot this year, I think there is still work to be done on positioning and pressing. I know the Millwall game isn't perhaps the best example to use because we were a man down, but saying that at times Millwall had 4 defenders back and only Revell was pressing for the ball. I'm sure a midfielder could have pushed on a bit when Millwall had all 4 back.

I'd say Cuthbert was as good .

Playing to your strengths sitting deeper when your not as fast as the strikers they have as then they very little chance of running in behind you.  If Cuthbert and Greer were on the halfway line and the ball gets played over the top and they try to catch them offside and the strikers not then neither of them have much of a hope of catching a striker. 

I would be more concerned by our midfielders sitting so deep and not continuing to be adventurous, the Millwall game for the last part of that game I barely saw a time when more than one midfielder crossed the half way line, this is more detrimental to our inviting pressure than defenders staying deep IMO.

there are times when one of the centre backs needs to drop off.these are the times when keeping a flat back line are risky,potential flick ons etc.
equally there are also times when keeping a flat back line is absolutely crucial, as the play can go beyond the defenders who are not level with the last man.

cannot say i've noticed greer dropping off at the wrong points myself.

If he played higher up the pitch he'd get done over the top every single time as he hasnt the pace to keep up with the strikers, then people would be moaning about that.

He does play deep,but with Lucas its not a bad thing as he seems to link up with Greer well and stays back on his line...ive got to agree in the sense that alot of teams would push up as far as possible,try the offsides etc but with the expansive style we are playing dosnt help like that.
To be honest DRS the mistake has been not to get two quality strikers in to kill matches off...or at least stretch the opposition defence..and that is a long standing whinge of mine.

Cuthbert looks like he's got a bit of pace. Or is he just one of those people that look like they're running fast, but actually he's not really moving that fast at all?

The two centre backs are very similar players neither has exceptional pace, if they played a high-line (square) they would be hammered even more by the ball over the top (pace). With Greer dropping deeper this definitely gives us more advantages than disadvantages defensively. It is good to see football played from the back (Greer the normal option to receive) when we are in attacking mode.

Isn't this what happened for all nearly all the goals at Gillingham, I assume that Greer or Wilson have decided to drop back to avoid this happening again.

Greer plays in a very similar way to Culverhouse when he was here towards the end of his career.

I prefer this way of playing to the Viveash and Reeves halfway line offside trap. The problems not Greer or the defence really we just need to keep more possession towards the end of games and pressure the opposition more further up the pitch. As the season goes on I'm sure we'll continue to gel and work as more of a unit.
