Title: Ham.
Post by: BANGKOK RED on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 17:21:57
You know, that stuff that comes from pigs.

I am not talking about the processed stuff that you get in sandwiches with plastic cheese. I man the real stuff direct from the butcher.

I am currently sat here with some wholemeal bread, proper butter, real mature cheddar, plentiful lager, English mustard and a selection of butchers and/or Virginia ham.

Fucking fantastic stuff ain't it, thank god for pigs. Those silly Muslims don't know what they are doing.

Definitely. Wiltshire ham is unassailable.

Actually it is Swine-dun, 'the hill where pigs are kept'.

Dun as in down, rather than ton or don denoting a settlement.

When I lived in Swindon they used to say hill of the pigs, so I bow to your superior knowledge of Anglo Saxon.

Interesting that Liddington Hill was supposed to be the site of Arthur's last battle against the marauding Saxons.  That's of course if Arthur was real and Sir Lancelot was lancing a lot.

In any event, in them posh restaurants ham is usually Wiltshire ham, a superior product.

Parma Ham is the winner for me. Although Iberico Bellota is a very close second.

Workmans Ham is the business. Used to be made and sold at Workmans grocers on the corner of Union St and Prospect Place. Since Workmans closed down now still sold at the sarnie shop on prospect place. Christmas isn't the same with out it !

Good, chunky-cut Wiltshire ham and Parma ham lead the way - I find it impossible to choose between them because they're so different!

I'd go with a lovely parma ham for use in cooking (come dine with me style something wrapped in parma ham), and a thick and chunky wiltshire (or gloucester old spot) for a ham, tomato and pickle sandwich.

On a side note, I really shouldn't read food related threads mid morning - I'm starving, and I left my lunch at home.  Bad times.
