Often this monkey would jump onto the King's back and grip tightly.
When Catherine was beheaded the monkey was also killed and Henry said something along the lines of 'I've finally got that monkey off my back'. The phrase was then used to describe the situation where you are able to rid yourself of a burden. There is a well known portrait of the Queen with the monkey.
