Title: Save Our Stanley
Post by: STFC_Gazza on Monday, September 7, 2009, 11:38:25

Now normally I would not actively encourage to make donations to another club however I have a soft spot for Accrington Stanley (and not because thy have my sir name, I wont forget the Swindon fans chanting “f*ck off Stanley” to me…or was it their fans)

Anyway they have only a few weeks to raise 300K. When we went to their place place during the L2 season a couple years ago, they had some of the nicest, genuine football fans around. They had some great stories about their non-league days etc saying “oh you tell us 10 years ago we would be playing Swindon Town in a league game we would laugh at you”, They are genuine fans (and yes someone will say, leeds Salisbury, chester etc all have genuine fans) and beign surrounded by Burnley, Blackburn, Bolton etc. they stand no chance really for their slice of the pie,. They only get gates of about 1,400 if they are lucky. If anyone wants to donate to Accrington Stanley… who are they?

Here is the link below.

Plus we don't want any more "Accrington Stanley, who are they?" adverts on T.V.

Making it to the league with crowds of 1,400..... police costs etc kill them and with Premier League teams within 30 miles of them they are screwed. They did buy the "Crown Pub" next door to the ground to try and make non match day revenue, They could have done what Canvey Island did and resign from the conference as they had no money, and are back in the Ryman League now to balance their books due to low crowds etc..

As much as I hate to say it about a club that's had such a troubled past, if they can't afford to be in the football league then they shouldn't be there. Plenty of teams have got into a mess by spending beyond their means, us included, and it's hard to have sympathy when problems arise from chasing the dream

Screwed over by Eric Whalley now at Chester.  Local ego that ran the club in rather a questionable manner and subsequently sold his shares and left them in the shit.

Good luck to them although without a benefactor or increase in supporters they need to drop back down into non-league where they belong and perhaps with time they will get themselves on a better footing to deal with league football.

Danny Coyle is taking Burnley there for a friendly which will raise approx the £300k so they don't need my money.

Didn't they get stiffed by having to put in several thousand seats they didn't want or need to comply with ground regs? Or was that someone else?

Is he a relation of Owen?

Pox got into the League thanks to Stanley's demise in the 60's. We don't really want them to go bust, and the main beneficiaries are Pox...again !!

I doubt that'd do it.

Worth pointing out that if they do go under, they will be the third completely separate team from Accrington to do so. The previous two were Accrington FC (formed 1891, folded 1896) and Stanley Villa FC (later renamed Accrington Stanley FC) (formed 1891, folded 1966). The current Accrington Stanley FC was formed in 1968.

So anyone talking about their long history, previous debt problems, going out of the Football League before etc are actually talking about a totally different club, albeit from the same town.

Think it was Accrington, but it's not just seats, their whole set-up isn't geared to coping with League football. As someone else said, they just don't get the gates needed to sustain League football even at that level. Sad really, they've earned their right to play in the League with their football but can't sustain it off the pitch. There's a few clubs in non-League recently who've been driven to the brink (and IIRC Newcastle Blue Star driven out of business) by ground grading requirements. FFS don't tell Phil Gartside though - it will be another way for the Prem elite to pull up the ladder behind them

As Paul says, Maybe they cannot "afford" to be in the league but have earned the right to play there. Their manager John Coleman joined them when they were in the  Northern Premier League First Division. He has earned the right to manage in the league by getting ASFC Promoted...... The team have earned the right and deserve to play in the Football League.

An interesting Accrington Stanley fact is that in their first season back in the football league, their average player salary was less than GBP30,000.

I'd warrant that this has risen since then, whilst attendances have not particularly.

In fact if anything I'd imagine after the novelty factor of the first season back, attendance has probably fallen.

You are correct. But they tried to sign more established Football League Players to try and compete... Although I think Darlington will be the next team to go bust. Massive stadium, had a league cup attendance of only 1,840 in a stadium of over 20,000

There's something I don't trust about Accrington Stanley ... Has anyone ever seen them and Oxford United in the Football League together at the same time? Hmmm, I'm quite suspicious :)

Given your closeness with names, and the fact that you want to be close to them and save their little Northern souls - why don't you just move there and start fundraising for them.....

Oh go on - please.......
