Title: Club's Anthems
Post by: Ralphy on Monday, August 31, 2009, 08:26:54
I've always thought it's a shame we don't have our own Club Anthem like most teams do. Been looking through youtube for footage of fans singing their anthems before matches and found Sheff Utd's 'chip butty song'. Quite amusing.

Whenever I hear 'marching on together' I actually want to be sick.

It haunts me. Our record against them is appauling. After weve lost to them, sometimes it will be ringing in my ears for quite a few nights while im trying to sleep.

Just hate it.

We're well overdue a win against Leeds.

I remember reading somewhere that they found Stoke to have the loudest fans in the football league. How they measured this i'm not quite sure. Plus Delilah is a shit song.

Delilah is an ace football song. Totally unique to Stoke and sounds great belted out by them.

We did have an anthem....but it died out in the 60's.

 http://www.farmersboys.com/MAIN/regimental_music.htm

It was the marching song of the Wiltshire regiment....with the demise of National Service, a generation grew up for whom it had no resonance.

The sun had sunk behind yon hill
Across yon dreary moor,
When wet and cold there came a boy
Up to a farmer's door.
'Can you tell me,' said he,'if any there be
Who will give me employ
For to plow and to sow and to reap and to mow
And to be a farmer's boy, boy,
And to be a farmer's boy?

Back in the 60's always used to have a bit of a military band, along with The Moonraker, wandering about shaking hands...with er young kids.

Dad always tells me about the band Reg. And how we used to get about 20,000 for home to Orient!

They were the days!

I guess there is no vocals to that being regimental,we really could do with our song to sing,it would be good if we had something that relates to us rather than sing what everyone else does.

Agreed. A unique song about life in Swindon.

I'm sure Ben could write one for us. :D

The vocals are the words printed...with emphasis on the end bit

For to plough and to sow, to reap and to mow
And to be a farmer's boy.

In best Wiltshire accent...

Memories, eh Reg.  Do you remember the Post Horn Gallop, the horn player at one end of the ground and the rest of the band at the other.  Just abouit my earliest memories of pre-match entertainment, oh and the half-times being put up manually in the corner of the ground!!

Would need harmonizing tho,I can see people being out of tune, and maybe add something related to STFC to it.

So is ben good at this kinda stuff then ?

Maybe we should give some clues to what we feel should be included in such a song, famous things about Swindon...such as the Magic Roundabout etc etc

Trains and roundabouts were a good suggestion, and perhaps we could chuck in something about Arkell's? It's local and they're practically a part of the club having been connected so long.
