Title: People that knock on your door and ask to see your energy bills
Post by: yeo on Thursday, August 20, 2009, 15:49:13
Are they genuine,or are they trying to scam you, or tie you in to long term deals or sign you up to stuff you dont want without your permission?

I always tell them Im not showing some stranger a utility bill just because he has an ID he could have knocked up himself and I think they are scammers and to go away ...please.

Had someone selling income insurance yesterday as well, and they knew my name which I thought was a bit annoying.

Am I being paranoid?

I don't think they're trying to get you to sign up to an expensive rip off plan, they're just trying to get you to move your supplier to whoever they represent. Not sure how legit their tactics are nowadays, but a few years back they were way beyond dodgy and at least one company got their testicles surgically removed by the regulator.

I think they'd get your account / supply details and then transfer your supplier without you agreeing to it, or even knowing anything about it until you got an account closure bill from your current supplier.

I'd always tell them to fuck off, if you want get the best deal just check one of the online comparison websites.

They ask for your bill so that they can see your usage and work out if they can save you money. Of course, they are salesmen and will probably tell you they can save you money even if they can't.

Yep. I get people calling all the time and every single one reckons they are the cheapest. They just tell you a pack of lies to get you to sign up to them.

A lot of the capped deals from last year run out in October so that's why you will see a lot of them over the next 6 weeks.

Had a guy knock on the door last evening, claimed that N Power had asked him to call on me with a view to saving money.  I challenged him, told him he didn't work for N Power.  He just kept repeating that N Power had asked him to call on me.  Asked to see his id issued by N Power.  He shrugged his shoulders and went on to call on my neighbour.  I called after him and told him to get his employers, if they were N Power, to call me to make an appointment.  With that my neighbour opened his door, I just said "Steve, make sure he shows you his N Power id".  Steve said to him "Well" and he just turned tail and went!  As he walked onto the pavement I believe I heard the word cunt used!!  My neighbour and I just laughed at him.

when people phone me, for example saying they are from "the orange company" (not "orange"...) I ask them to put their offer in writing.  they never do

The whistle could work at the door.  Just open the door and blow on it (the whistle, no smart comments please) while they are trying to talk.

This would be improved further by being naked except for some sort of novelty hat.

I hate these people. At least with jahova's witness you can scare then into not knocking on your door with a prominently placed 'give blood' sticker. Perhaps garlic would work on them?

I always think i'm gonna act really angry at these cold callers, but when it comes to it, I just can't.
Sometimes they are really polite and it feels a bit wrong to tell them to fuck off.
So I usually just listen to what they have to say, then politely say i'm not interested.
I'm just a bit of a wuss. They're just people doing a job they probably hate, just to pay the bills.
My missus is pretty blunt, she'll just say "i'm not interested" and shut the door. So I let her answer the door now :D

Just tell them that you don't own the property so it is not down to you to decide - that usually works and they go off to next door

They can never put anything in the post to you though as their deal only last's today of course, I thought cold calling was banned though anyway if not it should be

I don't despise them, they are after all trying to earn a living. BUT, I would never ever buy at the door or even from a telephone cold call which is just as bad, particualrly when they can't be arsed to dial your number personally & get a machine to do it.
If you want to make savings as has been said go online to compare prices then buy using a cash back site. (Who pay you what would have been paid to the comparison site) Simples !

They always say the same thing, that they offer the best deal.

Well most of them are lying.

And if they try and phone me up, I say due to security reasons I don't buy anything off the phone, because I don't know who I'm speaking to. Since I started doing that, the number of phonecalls have dropped.

That's what I do for sales people.

I just tell charity workers I'm unemployed (I'm not), although one tried to persuade me to work for them after I said this. I didn't feel so guilty for lying when I found out what she was paid (not mega bucks but it's a job not a voluntary thing).

A few sugested responses...

'Down, boy!  Down!  Sorry.  Rex does get agitated sometimes, especially around people he doesn't know.  Do you like Staffordshire Bull Terriers?'

'It's alright, Mother!  I'll apply the rest of the haemorrhoid cream in a minute after I've made this nice young man a cup of tea.'

'Are you a friend of Jesus?'

Haven't done it on the doorstep, but in town when hounded by clipboard people I have used "I am ever so sorry, but I really do not speak a word of English".  Annoys the hell out of them.  One even called me a prick.  She might have had a point, but she left me well alone when I walked back past her 10 mins later.

I always used to answer the door in my pants scratching my arse, they always used to give it the i'll call back later response but never did, quite funny to see them trying to make a serious selling point to a man in his pants, they clearly just couldn't concentrate.

You may laugh, but I always get asked if my Mum is in.  This really is the worst thing they can say when trying to sell.  They often leave gutted as I explain I look after 300 houses in Swindon and was looking for a energy supplier and if they hadnt offended me I would of signed up there and then.

Reminds me once though this guy came back at 8.59pm saying he had one minute to sell before the legal deadline of cold calling.  My mrs told him earlier on to come back at 9 when I was home, he was fucked, had clearly done a pill as was rocking from side to side I nearly invited him in as was making me laugh lots.

Generally these guys just rip you off so avoid

An uncle and I were bored one day and so decided to turn the tables on visiting mormons by trying to keep them there for as long as possible.

They never knocked again.
