Title: I'm coming back... Post by: hansgruber on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 12:58:09 ...from Australia for a few weeks in August/September. Hurrah you say!
Yes, quite. But anyway, I'm bringing my Aussie girlfriend ("Sheila") with me for her first trip to England. Where should we go around the Swindon area? Obviously we'll be in for the Southend game, but apart from that any ideas? Ta. Title: Re: I'm coming back... Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 13:01:07 If the weather is good you could take her to Lydiard or Coate for a picnic. If you wish to venture further afield then the Cotswolds could be a good bet too.
Title: Re: I'm coming back... Post by: hansgruber on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 13:02:35 Is Coate still nice? Haven't been there for a while. They still got the old diving board and the crazy golf/pitch and putt action going on?
Title: Re: I'm coming back... Post by: bigbobjoylove on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 13:08:16 Avebury is a nice walk if the day is decent.

Title: Re: I'm coming back... Post by: Arch Stanton on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 13:12:25 Lacock is one of the nicest places in Wiltshire to visit, nice pubs, good cafe's, nice old house to look around etc. Essential viewing if you're a Harry Potter fan, which I am not.
Title: Re: I'm coming back... Post by: hansgruber on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 13:21:41 Ah, but the Sheila likes Harry Potter. What's in Lacock then?

I think the abbey wa used for some of the Hogwarts scenes. Also the first ever photograph was taken from there. Bowood house (other side of Calne) and gardens is a nice afternoon out if it's fine weather. Title: Re: I'm coming back... Fox Talbot Museum....photography pioneer is there....his early stuff is awesome. Title: Re: I'm coming back... Post by: Arch Stanton on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 13:34:43 Ah, but the Sheila likes Harry Potter. What's in Lacock then? As Neville says, the house/abbey/cloisters were all used as Hogwarts. The streets in Lacock have featured in all TV period drama's etc. If yer Shelia wants a taste of ye olde England, its the place to be.... http://www.britainexpress.com/counties/wiltshire/Lacock/ http://www.yourguide.org.uk/lacock/ Title: Re: I'm coming back... Post by: Reg Smeeton on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 13:38:14 Salisbury Cathedral is worth making the effort....once not only the tallest building in Wiltshire, but the world.
Title: Re: I'm coming back... Post by: Reg Smeeton on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 13:45:42 A solid leisurely day out can be had around Marlborough...take in the town, Savernake, Wilton Windmill and Crofton Beam Engine. The Beam Engine is mega ace...and steaming over the August bank hol.
http://www.croftonbeamengines.org/intro.html You can also do a bit of wandering on the K and A. If you go in the windmill, watch your head though... Title: Re: I'm coming back... Post by: Danjackson10 on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 14:12:44 lacock is nice, its where im getting married :)
