Not sure it has been mentioned but there is a new boozer opening down town where O'Neils and Reflex used to be, it's going to be Bushwackers downstairs which will be food/daytime pub and Sin upstairs which will be a club.

They already have similar set ups in Birmingham and Worcester and say there aiming for upmarket clientelle, young professionals and people who like drinking in old town.

The names Bushwacker and Sin don't imply they're aimed an upmarket clientelle though do they? Also can't see the Old Towners getting out of their comfort zone and going to that neck of the woods.

Be interesting really trying to aim for that kind of clientelle in chav central, I prefer Old Town these days but will probably go down town and see if this place is any good.

Suppose a big plus point is its nice to see something new opening down there as loads of places have closed down there in the past few months.

Sounds a bit ming

We tried to get an up market place in bottom of town "the glasshouse" it bombed. maybe it was to do with drinks or the fact itw as the bedroom , in any case it bombed, Rush tried to do the same to varying degrees of success so i would be cautious with this place. Right venue, wrong part of town IMO, It should be competing wtih the Old Bank, Spot, McKenzies etc. He has said that is their niche market. If he thinks the crowd from old town are going to go to chav central (bottom of town) then he is a bit deluded. i give the place 2 years before going busy, only on the basis that the food part may do ok with local businesses in the area.

Upmarket..... with an offer of 2 hours worth of drinks for £12.95!!! Only Beer and house wine though. I'm sure that would lower the tone.

Saw this in the paper yesterday.Think they are being a bit picky.It is the bottom of town after all,its a bit smelly  :D

Difficult to see the Old Town crowd wanting to venture in to the war zone.

I wish the Glasshouse got bombed.

The reason it failed is because you still let the same people in you did before.

In the end because it was business..... before we only let certain people in there but palyed the wrong music, it look like it was always shut it was just a very poor layout but..... too alte now, it now sits there paying loads of rent for a derelict building.

Haha that was sound advice as well, glasshouse were very foolish they ended up lowering there prices to £1 a drink and it attracted a worse clientelle than the Wetherspoons.

The Glasshouse failed cos it was a fucking shit heap!

We had to in the end. as literally it was doing worse than it was the Bedroom so just trying to get ANYONE in there... End of the day now its free to anyone, there is no cost to take it over, just the massive rent etc we are paying, its cheaper to keep it boarded up than run it.

Someone should open a decent poker room club / pub in Swindon, everyone loves poker.

I've played there a few times, but the blokes that play there love, and i mean LOVE, to gamble. They gamble at the games, between each other, what's on the box... As a poker player and not a gambler, watching someone rebuy on a £10 re buy tournament 17 times in less than a hour is shocking. Seeing people shouting odds between each other for who scores next on in the footy game showing on the tv is amusing though.

I've only played there about 5 times, but got pissed off with their buyins. They used to have rates of say £25 + £5. The £5 going into a pot for an end of year tournament, which only the regulars played enough to get into. I didn't like that. Especially when playing at Gala in Bristol was cheaper, you got dealers and a nice big spread of players of differing ability.

Anyone know if these cash games run much? I'd guess the standard is pretty low so I might have to try them out.

Bang on, Very Clicky, and they will bet on anything. Still a good laugh though whipping some of the Pricks in glasses who think they are pro's. Beers Reasonable, £20 torney friday nights is ok.

The glasshouse was the Bedroom with a different name and was pretty grotty.

Went to bottom of town for first time in probably well over a year the other Saturday and was absolutely horrific.  I'd rather spend a fiver plus on a glass of wine, drink less and go to old town as usual.

They've ran everytime i've been there. As players get knocked out of the tourneys, they start cranking them out at what ever stakes everyone fancies. The standard is quite high and not bad for a TA player, because most of them are closer to Gus Hansen than Dan Harrington. A mate went once, and walked out £800 up, although that was from winning the Tournament with their old bounty format (which placed a massive sum on someone's head, by name out of a hat, and if that person wins, they win the bounty sum). He never went back. :D

I hate the bottom of town. Full of wankers and bouncers.
The only pub worth venturing to is The Sir Daniel and that's only because it's cheaper than the other pubs.
Old Town is better, but for a good night out, hit the back street pubs :)

i aint been out down the bottom of town on a fri-sat for ages.full of pissed up chavs who want to fight every fucker,and young slappers puking everywhere.
dont mind down there through the day or midweek though.
old town is better but i dont like the spot-longs-mackenzies.

Cheaper, but actually more expensive than the Groves.

I was down the bottom of town midweek a couple of weeks back, pitched up about 10:30 and everywhere was empty.  Not just having a handful of punters but having no punters..

Even Subway has bouncers - that says it all really

I used to really hate the bottom of town when I lived in Swindon.  A typical night would start in old town, a lovely few hours, nice pubs, few beers.  At closing time you had two options.  1) Bag of chips with curry sauce and home time - this always ended happily.  2) More booze down town - this always ended in the witnessing of aggression, casual violence, police sirens and street sex (always ugly people). 

To be fair, this doesn't just apply to Swindon.  What classes as the botton of town equivalent in Cardiff is the same, only bigger. 

St Mary street is still better than the bottom of town in Swindon though.

Do you know which nights tend to be busiest?

From recollection most night are about the same, but i think the rebuy tourney nights are busier. And weekends. I would guess that you'd get the best rewards on the nights of the big buyin tourneys. Oh and watch out for the collection of crazy Italians in the cash games!

Gala Harbour Side is Bristol is probably more worth it for cash games. They start running cash games towards the end of the tourneys, and by around midnight on, they've usually got quite a few going. You used to also get a massive amount of cocks who are crap and ripe for the taking in the larger cash games. They buy in for a fair wack and proceed to push - along with several others! It's amusing to watch, but more akin to demo play, because they'll turn over barely playable hands. :D

Saying that though, the last few times i've been the standard of the cash games has been pretty good.

the harbourside is full of donks when the cash start getting played, but even if they are donks you need to be carefull, i had £200 in the pot and floped the nut straight, i push all in and get a call and this donk has middle pair, he hits runner runner for a full house, im sorry but you do not risk 200 odd quid on middle pair.
That same week layed down QQ pre flop, as i had a pretty good read on a guy who i was sure had AA (he pushed all in) i folded and the person next to me called with 10 10, I was very happy with my lay down only to see the flop come Q Q 7. I layed down Quads, I havent played much since that night.
along with losing my whole bank roll online in the space of a few days.

Planning on getting back into soon, just very depressing when you run bad.
