We stayed in the best western in the centre and was alright-  a few years ago mind. Up from the sex museum theres a football pub with the owner a hertha director. Gave them my Swindon shirt, to put up there.

We stayed in the Alexander Platz, which was massive with a casino on the 37th floor or something. The area wasn't great though, but it was cheap as fuck and properly nice. Found it on Alpharooms.com which invariably has some cracking bargins.

I stayed in the ABACUS hotel in Tierpark in the old East. It was OK. Payed on the internet, then they charged a fortune for breakfast at the hotel, so watch out for that if its not included.

That was fairly useless info, but what I would say is Berlin is absolutely massive, very spaced out. So try and stay in the area you intend to visit most. Best area is probably in the centre of old West Berlin (around the zoo). Otherwise you spend all of your time on the Metro system.

Spencer's right about staying near the zoo, very useful.  If you are interested in walking tours of Berlin I can let you have details of a Nazi walking tour and an excellent Cold War walking tour (led by an ex-MI6 spy, a thoroughly interesting chap).

I can't help on the hotel unless you have wedges of cash.  Apparently the one we stayed in we got cheap on some auction site, but it's usually more expensive.

Does that mean you have to goosestep ?, That'd be interesting.

cheers all. we're going for new year, so chances are anywhere we stay will be expensive. my girlfriend knows berlin well and her friend is now living there - i was just after some personal recommendations, hotels.com et al can be a little misleading from experience :)

Stricktly speaking that's a Prussian march, not a Nazi one.  As such you can do it in Germany without fear of arrest.

Been to Berlin a few times now, top notch City break IMO. In regard to hotels obviously lots of variety in style, location, quality, cost etc.

Last place we stayed was good regarding pretty much all aspects. That was 'Ku Damm 101' which is a boutique hotel (if you like that kind of style). Not far from the tube which makes it dead easy to get around (particularly if you get the tourist travel pass - bit like the Oyster card) and covers a certain amount of rail travel outside Berlin. Google up boutique hotels in Berlin which is worth a look.
