Title: Cherno Samba
Post by: STFC_Gazza on Saturday, July 11, 2009, 15:19:13
Stiker on trial with us... seems to be one of those who has loads of potential and thought very highly of bus never quite made it, may be ok as a backup striker, has only scored 1 senior goal in england.

Cherno Samba - Millwall

Few will have heard of Cherno Samba but he is a striker who has already been pursued by a number of Premiership clubs.

Frequently compared to Michael Owen, the 16-year-old is an England schoolboy international.

He has been linked with numerous top-flight clubs, including Liverpool, Leeds and Arsenal.

And he is set to make the first-team breakthrough at Millwall this season.

Samba went on the recent pre-season tour of Scandinavia - the first time he has been included in the first-team squad.

Sensationally quick, Samba is set to make his mark this season and few doubt he will soon become a household name.

=======

He came to prominence when as a 13-year-old, he scored 132 goals in 32 games [1] .

He was approached by various agents, but eventually signed school boy forms with Millwall, under the watchful gaze of coach/agent Harry Gerber. His prolific form continued, and he was allowed to talk to other clubs by Millwall - both York City and Leyton Orient showed interest, but Millwall turned down Colchester United's 50k offer. In return, Millwall agreed a contract, whereby he was guaranteed two years of football at senior team level, on him signing full school boy forms. [2] . Due to make his Millwall F.C. debut on 22 February, 2003, it never happened and he never fulfilled his promise, playing out his two professional years in the reserves.

In the summer of 2004, after being released when his Millwall career failed to take off as expected, he joined Spanish side Cádiz CF [3] , and was then loaned out for season 2005/6 to Málaga CF B. [4] . Despite being a regular in the England Under-20 side, he was forgotten in Spain as a transfer target by British clubs.

He returned to English football after Ian Holloway signed him on a free on transfer deadline day, August 2006 for Plymouth Argyle [5] signing him to a two year contract. Cherno made his English League debut on 30 September2006 as a second half substitute (74th minute) at the Ricoh Arena against Coventry City, and within 8 minutes he scored his first league goal in a 1-0 win for Argyle.

In January, 2007 he joined Wrexham on loan for a month, with the option to extend to the end of the season [6] . After three appearances totalling 88 minutes, with all matches resulting in defeats, Samba returned to Plymouth on 26 February [7] .

Samba was transfer listed by Argyle manager Ian Holloway in July 2007 with Holloway stating "With the young strikers I've added this year, I can't see him breaking through". In August 2007, it was rumoured that Samba was on trial at Championship side Norwich City. [8] He was released by Argyle in December 2007. [9]

0n 8 August 2008, Samba signed an 18 month contract with Finnish side FC Haka, he was released from his contract in February 2009.

On 3 December, 2008 it was reported that English Premiership side Blackburn Rovers were interested in signing Samba, following a trial period at the club. [10]

On one hand not played much at all in any of his professional clubs, despite being 24. On the other hand he's only on trial.

Read somewhere he has had a bad attitude. Maybe at 24 he's matured a bit and realises he's in last chance saloon. doesn't cost anything to window shop. (bar the airfare etc before some clever sod mentions it)

Samba's career so far reminds me of Moses Ashikodi.  Enough talent for a series of managers to give him a chance but there's obviously something lacking as it's so far completely unfulfilled.

Title: Re: Cherno Samba
Post by: DV on Saturday, July 11, 2009, 17:34:00
I know he always gets bought up and half the time its not serious...but...we need a striker or 2 and we need them now.

We have a player on trial who at the age of 24 has started 4 games in his career and scored 1 goal. Even Barry Corr has a better record than that.

Parkin has at least, albiet in the past scored goals at this level. He is without a club and a free agent. We could certainly do alot worse.

Get him down here training and give him a few pre-season games. Whats the worst that can happen? he doesnt play well and we dont sign him.

How many proven L1 strikers are there out there out of contract?

No, sorry, reading that back it does look I'm doing the "inside knowledge" bit but I didn't mean that, just that there's a host of reasons why it might not make sense for both sides for SSP to come on trial here

ok as a third option striker but we need to spend at least £250k on a decent one as our first choice now Coxy has gone ...

If we intend to start with a free transfer alongside Paynter we will struggle to score goals

Title: Re: Cherno Samba

Presumably Wilson is looking for a foil for Paynter - a smallish quick man. SSP is a similar type of player to Paynter isnt he?

Haha you know what i mean. As you rightly point out his record in this league is prolific so why is he out of work. Razak and pook have even got trials at league1 teams yet parkin is not. Unfortunatly it clear his fitness is fucked

Title: Re: Cherno Samba
Post by: juddie on Monday, July 13, 2009, 10:15:11
Not sure which clubs they are, but last time I spoke to him the only offers he'd had were from Scotland. I don;t think he wants to go up there, given that he didn;t really settle in Ipswich, but then he does have family north of the border.

Interesting, though. I'm surprised no-one seems to be prepared to take a punt on him, including us. But then we don't know the true extent of his injury history, his salary demands etc etc

I for one think we should give Parkin a chance even if its only on a three month contract, considering what he did here last time I think it would do his confidence the world of good to have some fans who actually have belief in his abilities.  I know there are arguments that he has been injured and we should never go back but I think in this case we should make an exception

Title: Re: Cherno Samba
Post by: Rich Pullen on Monday, July 13, 2009, 11:04:12
Despite the only player of questionable ability Wilson has brought in thus far was a striker (and some people still rate Razak) - I've been happy with his business and therefore trust him in the transfer market... So if he doesn't want to bring in Parkin, so be it.

Title: Re: Cherno Samba
Post by: Riddick on Monday, July 13, 2009, 12:33:02
I think we could do a lot worse than have Parkin as one of the four strikers at the club. However with Paynter and Peacock already that would leave one space for somebody with a bit of pace, which isn't enough. If we could get rid of Peacock i'd have Parkin in a flash.

I don't think Parkin would fit in with the type of player that Wilson is looking for - i.e. can step up to the championship and not look out of place, Super Sammy would be a risk

There is obviously a reason that he hasn't had any offers since leaving Luton.
He's not done anything since he's left us, he's played in The Championship, League 1 and League 2, and has not done alot at all, he's also had a few injuries.
He's not worth the risk in my opinion.

Title: Re: Cherno Samba
Post by: china red on Monday, July 13, 2009, 12:47:45
It's funny to think that the summer Parkin left was the same time we got rid of Brian Howard.  Who could have guessed that of the two Howard would be the one playing regular Championship football and Parkin would have just been relegated to the conference four years later.

Title: Re: Cherno Samba
