I think in terms of PR for the club it is vital that at least one player signs a new contract, to show to potential signings that not all of them want out.

It would look awful if they all left, players would look at us and think there must be something wrong - which of course there is, but we don't want them to know that.

Evans' ego must have taken quite a bashing these last few weeks.

As anybody that has ever read his column will know he does like to make everybody aware that he went to the FA School at Lilleshall and that he's been just about everywhere playing for the U21s.

Unfortunately whilst he and his agent have an extremely high opinion of his abilities this opinion clearly isn't shared by anybody else in football.

Having gone in all guns blazing in the contract negotiations looking for a long term contract on much more money he's now having to face up to the fact that since nobody else wants him he's effectively going to have to live with what Swindon offer him.

It'll all be dressed up in the media as negotiating a mutually acceptable deal but everybody will know that he's staying because no other club was willing to give him an escape route.

I think if he has some real competition he could return to his form of the 03/04 season and do well

I'm happy for him to stay although he's about average at this level - for the moment, he's still got a lot of years ahead so could yet achieve his ambitions - which I hope he does.

King returns from his working holiday in Spain needing to find replacements for Brian Howard, Matt Heywood and Grant Smith, who all moved on to pastures new last week.

Evans, Sammy Igoe and David Duke have yet to agree new contracts but King already has his sights on some new faces.

Former Manchester United youngster Paul Tierney and ex-Bolton starlet Ricky Shakes are believed to be top of King’s wanted list.

When Evans had to fight for his place he seemed to perform a lot better. That's one of the issues with our squad, the lack of competition. I think last season we were all in general agreement that the starting XI underperformed. With a bit of competition I think we would have been right up there. It's a shame our finances dictate really, but this is the simple fact of football now.

i remember we had a bit of a keeper crisis that premier league season. digby & hammond injured & we had stuart kerr, paul heald & jon sheffield on loan. none were really that good which is probably why we let in 100 goals! maybe if digby had stayed fit we might have done slightly better.

hopefully nothing like that will happen this season!

On a more serious note, if Evans does sign, it will be unlikely that he'll have much competition next season. Matty Bulman will probably be promoted to no.2, while the wages we were payin' Book-end will probably be used to bulk up the squad in other areas. However, i fear this will be detrimental to Rhys development, as King would be unlikely to drop Evans for an inexperienced keeper, even if Evans was having a mare, which has happened this season past.....

All in all, Rhys is a good keeper, with room for improvement, but he needs some form of competition next season

I remember seeing his first game for us against Hull away, and as normal, some fans in front of me were effing and blinding about how useless he was and that he'd never make a good keeper being so small!!

We also had Flowers on loan a few years back in the distant mist's of time.

We actually had Flowers on loan twice.....he played a couple in his first spell and 5 in his second.

Flowers and Fjortoft snog anyone :oops:,

I can't believe no one has mentioned Talia playing an absolute blinder at Charlton away in 99/00. They were top we were bottom, we won 1-0 thanks to Talia. Best performance I've EVER seen from a goalkeeper. He was superb.
