Title: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 15:02:35 Right. earlier i bought a sagem digital tv receiver. Its not picking anything up though, and i think this may be because i dont have an ariel. If i were to buy a cheap ariel and plug it in am i right in thinking all will be well with the world?
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Nemo on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 15:04:03 Should be, depends on the area. If your area has a weak signal, you may need a better aerial.
Check yourself on here http://www.freeview.co.uk/availability (http://www.freeview.co.uk/availability) Strangely, I seem to be losing my freeview coverage after the digital switchover. How the feck that works I don't know. Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 15:05:56 i should apparently get all the freeview channels in my area. Thank you nemo, i shall purchase an ariel tomorrow

You'd be far better off getting a decent 'high gain' aerial, you may get lucky with a cheap aerial, but you even if you have enough signal in your area you may still end up getting interference from moped/power tools even light switches.A cheap Ariel will keep your lawn down mind. Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Arriba on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 16:53:43 an indoor cheapy one may not work.then again it might
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 17:58:45 Thanks, that cleared it up
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Arriba on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 18:01:38 try it,if it doesn't work take it back for a refund.reckon it's a bout 50-50 that it will.i've tried it at my house and it didn't work
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Sigs on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 18:03:04 an indoor cheapy one may not work.then again it might Worth a go, too many variables to judge. I'd be surprised if it worked, but he may live 100 yards from a transmitter.Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 18:03:49 Is there not an aerial on the roof of your house?
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 18:04:48 no idea. theres no stuff to connect it to my telly even if there was
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 18:06:47 So there is no tv whatsoever in your house that can pick up an analogue signal?
Just thought you could get a singal splitter and run more than one telly off the main aerial and you'd get a decent reception that way. Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 18:19:41 I have no idea what most of that meant, but i appreciate the effort. Its not a house per se, its more a renovated old peoples home
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Arriba on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 18:25:12 you'll have to get a tv license too dave.
try the indoor one, and make sure its a half decent one with a booster. Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 18:43:14 already sorted on the licensing issue. way ahead of you boss
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Arriba on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 18:55:26 could be money wasted if it doesn't work.being ahead of me aint a good thing if that is the case.
will they let you fix an outdoor one if the indoor aerial doesn't work? Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 20:03:16 In a word, no.
I'm not worried about the money. I've already wasted £30 on a digital receiver which is currently useless and the recession is little more than media hype Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 20:04:37 Are you in halls then? Usually there's a coaxial socket on the wall for the aerial. Unless your halls really are shit. Do other people have televisions?
Also are you sure you're a man? Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 20:07:41 As i don't walk around bleeding everywhere i'm fairly sure i'm a man. Its not halls really, its a sort of similar arrangment but with a load of middle aged asians rather than late teen students. I'm not sure if anyone has a telly and to be comlpetely honest im far to scared to ask
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Arriba on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 20:47:01 is there anything on tv worth watching, that you cant get online?
fuck all on tonight. Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 20:55:41 That is a good point, especially now you can watch bbc live on their website. I'm not really a fan of watching stuff on the internet, coz the qualitys usually shit and its a lot less spontaneous
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Doore on Sunday, July 5, 2009, 23:58:54 I don't watch much online, I think its because my computer and internet connection are quite unreliable, and I generally have an aversion to doing everything online. I think time away from the computer, as addictive as it can be, is quite important, and I quite enjoy limited choices, like you get from flicking channels. The only problem with the internet (and I write as a big internet fan) is that with so much choice, you end up not knowing what to do/listen to/watch. Its the same thought process that stops me from shopping online.
"You can do everything online" is a phrase that scares the shit out of me - as though leaving your house to do things is the most impracticle incovenience. And yes, I do see the irony of this uncalled-for rant being posted at 1am on an internet forum. I've had much beer, you understand. Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, July 6, 2009, 18:01:44 I think it's ironic that you'd watch tv to get away from a computer screen :)
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Bogus Dave on Monday, July 6, 2009, 18:28:29 Now i'm a bit worried because my digital radio doesn't get any signal, despite it saying theres 42 stations found when it scans. And the fact i can supposedly still pick up bristol based radio stations despite living in slough
Title: Re: Techy question Post by: Doore on Monday, July 6, 2009, 19:13:42 I think it's ironic that you'd watch tv to get away from a computer screen :) Having read it back, it isn't an entirely logical argument. Beer logical is fallible, alas. Time away from the computer today was had in the form of a good game of tennis. Far more logical. Now for some beer and some more beer logic. |
