Title: Taxing a car... Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 07:50:26 Bought a new car last night, but it doesn't come with any tax.
I'm picking it up next Wednesday and get 7 days free Driveaway insurance with it and they can print me a cover note on site, but how am I supposed to get the tax with no log book and MOT certificate? Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: land_of_bo on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 07:55:45 I *thought* you could do it online as long as you have the reg no (and perhaps the number off the top of the MOT form) as the systems are linked up now?
Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Danjackson10 on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 07:57:33 why dont you ring the dvla and ask?

You need a reference number from the V5C, which I don't have yet, and in any case they send the tax disc to the registered keeper - currently not me. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Sippo on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 08:18:19 Ask whoever your buying the car from to tax it. The documents will be in their name.
Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Phil_S on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 08:19:23 You can do it at a Post office with the Insurance certificate, MOT & the new keeper section (section 10), of the registration document. It's valid for two months.
The new keeper section is the bit that they should give you on sale of the car (They send the rest to the DVLA) Alternatively get the seller to tax it for you& pay them extra ? Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 08:41:02 I'm buying from the Carshop who won't tax it because they offer a "no frills" service ::) Basically they're too lazy to go to a Post Office and get a tax disc.
In all normality I'd pick the car up and go straight to a Post Office to get it taxed, but I'm picking it up at 6pm by which time the Post Office will be shut. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 08:51:44 Only paid a deposit so far, I pay the balance when I collect it.

Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 09:15:02 Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTI. 5 door.
I'm a family man now. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Ardiles on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 09:27:25 We'll be heading down that route as well soon, Sam. If you don't mind me asking, what was the mileage/age and how much did you end up paying? (PM fine if you don't want to post publicly.)
Thanks. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Batch on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 09:51:31 Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTI. 5 door. I'm a family man now. You'll be thankful of the extra boot space. If you don't mind me asking, what was the mileage/age and how much did you end up paying? (PM fine if you don't want to post publicly.) Thanks. It's an 06 plate with 60,000 miles. The ticket price was £5977, we negotiated a deal at £4088 plus our car as p/x. What spec is yours sam? It's the 120bhp with Club trim. Basically the same as the standard 1.9 CDTI, just doesn't have half leather seats. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Ardiles on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 11:11:41 Nice deal!
Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Arriba on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 11:13:22 surely the garage can advise how to tax it?

We are going to be selling the Focus (05 plate) we bought 3 years ago in the near future. I have nothing but praise for it. The only time it let me down was last week when the power steering fluid started to leak. Overall, very reliable and a nice car to drive. Title: Re: Taxing a car... The only time it let me down was last week when the power steering fluid started to leak. Overall, very reliable and a nice car to drive. I had the ST170 a few years back. No hint of a problem, would recommend a Focus to anyone. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 14:02:40 As far as I am aware (I've dealt with a few of these at work when we've sold our cars off) there is a way you can obtain tax from the DVLA without the MOT Certificate. I do however think you need part 10 of the V5. Tbh i'm not entirly sure on how it can all be done. It's probably best you check with the DVLA or better still tell the seller to get you the bloody log book and MOT Certificate as surely they should be able to provide it?
Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 14:16:32 Yes, they have it but obviously I won't get it until I go and pick the car up. Then, by law, I shouldn't really drive the car on the road without tax.
I believe the Carshop's normal process is to point customers in the direction of the nearest Post Office, however at 6pm it will be closed. However, I've found out from a colleague at work who also bought from the Carshop that they will let you drive away without ensuring the car is taxed, so I'll probably just drive it home and get the tax the next morning. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 14:17:25 Also, anybody had any dealings with extended warranties? Carshop have offered me one through the RAC at £25 a month. Seen others for around the same price and I'm wondering if it's worth my while getting one.

Worth looking around and getting a few quotes, e.g. http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk/ (not a recommendation) Never bothered myself, but if you do be very careful to read the T&Cs regarding, claim limits, exclusions and conditions (how often/where servicing has to take place/mileage limits/secondary damage/pre existing faults etc). Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 14:25:57 I guess it depends what you want the warranty to cover and if you think you'll need it. Most warranty options allow up to 24 months so if you think you're buying a motor that's going to have dodgy parts in a years time it might be worth it. Then again if nothing goes wrong then you've paid £25 a month or whatever amount a month for no reason. It's a bit like mobile phone insurance. Up to you really.
Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 14:58:38 That's the thing, I'm not sure whether it would be worth paying out say £500 over two years when my repair bills may not even come to that.
I've had a search around and there don't seem to be any common faults with the car, so I may just make do without it. I get a dealer warranty for 3 months so if anything was wrong with the car, I'd hope it would show within that time anyway *touches wood*. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Bob's Orange on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 18:56:24 same as, i bloody loved that car. now i have the Seat Ibiza instead. Regrets? i've got a few... The only thing the ST lacked was a bit of real power. I've now got a V6 Audi A3 which certainly does the job! Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, July 2, 2009, 22:14:09 surely the garage can advise how to tax it? It's the Carshop though, who are notorious for their excellent customer service. Also, anybody had any dealings with extended warranties? Carshop have offered me one through the RAC at £25 a month. Seen others for around the same price and I'm wondering if it's worth my while getting one. £25 a month is a bit steep! The company that does the 3 month warranty will send you through a cheaper quote at the end of the term to entice you anyway, but it's owrth getting some quotes. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Phil_S on Friday, July 3, 2009, 08:14:33 Just a thought, but if the car is an 06 plate it may be less than 3 yrs old so the MOT won't be needed to tax it.
If this is the case, I would also suggest that if the first MOT is due in the next 4 months get it done before the dealers 3 mth warranty runs out ! Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: magicroundabout on Friday, July 3, 2009, 08:17:41 si's right about the warrenty. they'll send you through a renewel which will be really cheap. but as your car has already done 60k (very high maleage for it's age) they may not offer decent cover
Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, July 3, 2009, 08:44:05 What car did you P/X? Peugeot 307. Just a thought, but if the car is an 06 plate it may be less than 3 yrs old so the MOT won't be needed to tax it. Car was registered May 2006, so had it's first MOT in May this year. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, July 3, 2009, 21:51:47 Picked the car up this evening. Got a run down to Weston-super-Mud tomorrow and didn't want the risk of anything happening to the car being p/x'ed.
They let me drive it away with no tax, obviously I'll get it sorted first thing in the morning. Quite surprised with the service. Got handed the pre-delivery checklist which said 'advise front tyres < 1.5mm' and 'advise front pads'. There was me thinking I'd have to fork out £200+ near enough straight away on tyres on pads, but low and behold when I saw the car it has 4 brand new tyres and brand new front brake pads. Nice one Carshop. That'll save my expenses for a year or so. Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Simon Pieman on Saturday, July 4, 2009, 01:45:38 Isn't that under the legal limit?
Title: Re: Taxing a car... Post by: Batch on Saturday, July 4, 2009, 07:04:03 Yes, legal is 1.6mm so they had no choice.
I thought there were additional legalities brake disks needing to last 4000 miles after purchase, but I can't find that on t'internet so maybe I dreamt it. |
