Title: Malaria tablets
Post by: nochee on Thursday, June 25, 2009, 22:24:25
Iv never had to take them before and have heard that they can give some nasty side effects.

Im going to need them for my holiday this year and have been recommended Malarone tablets. Has anyone ever popped these badboys? Are they ok or do they also make you sprout abnormal body hair, wolf like fangs and give you a temprement like a ravaged flee bitten dog?

Fuck it, i might just go to Western super mare.

When I went to India the girls that went took some (even though I didn't as my doctor said there was no need) and both of them got sick.

Where are you going?

Pretty sure it was Malarone actually.

Better to be safe Nochee, rather a bit of sickness than Malaria tbh

I have been to both Vietnam and Laos and didn't bother, and I spent quite a lot of time in Laos. Not one problem with Malaria of course, it's all about Dengue in that part of the world.

What the bloody hell are you going to Laos for anyway? It really is the armpit of the world, Vietnam is great though.

Yes they gave me nausea after taking them , and for some reason attracted more mossies to me, which is well handy when you are allergic to them, at least i didn't get malaria though.

Malarone are the most expensive anti malaria tablets but have least side effects, so are probably worth the extra money. Going to be looking at just over £2 a tablet.

just take garlic and yeast tablets daily for 2 weeks before you go and while you are there, it makes your blood stink and taste like shit to mossys and they leave you alone. i once spent 2 months in mexican jungle and didnt get bitten once, they used to land on me have a sniff and fuck off.

They also don't like Marmite and lemon.

Im not sure if i fancy the risk of not taking them. Is Laos really the armpit of the world???? Iv heard its
a great place for white water rafting and August is a good time to go for fast rapids. Not sure what else
there is to do there tho. I can let the GF decide what she wants to do there.

Just don't take larium...I took those fuckers for months and it was never a nice day when it was larium time.

So iv heard! I think they are banned in the UK now anyway.

I used Malarone for my trip to Thailand last year and neither me or the missus had any problems whatsoever with side effects. Although they are the most expensive (£2 per tablet like someone else said earlier), I only had to start using them one day before and then for a week afterwards, whereas the other options you tend to have to take for a longer period of time.

I'd also recommend Original Source Lemon shower gel to help keep mossies away as well.

I used Malarone when I went to India, I think I had to take them for a week before and a week after or something like that.  My trip was a fortnight and I was absolutely fine.  The only nausea I experienced was after I got back, on the final two days of taking the tablets, but I think it was well worth the expense.
Definitely take Marmite with you and eat as much bread as possible, as the yeast thing does help to some extent.

The nausea was nothing to do with the Desperado's you were drinking then ;)  Is there anywhere locally that sells them?  Only ever seen them abroad!

malarone probably is the best - they are more expensive, but you only need to take them for a week either side of your trip. Most of the other ones you need to take for up to a month before you leave so that your body can build up a level of the chemical that makes it effective.  I had mefloquinine and chlorquat a few years back - gave me the shits and in most areas of the world the malria parasite is resistant to it anyway.  I know several people that have had malarone; they've not reported any problems and all said they were worth the extra cost.

over all, you really don't want to risk getting malaria - really nasty disease, likely to have problems all the rest of your life if you get it.
