Title: Vodka
Post by: Berniman on Thursday, June 18, 2009, 21:46:24
Anyone have any preferences?

I thought this might help Ben as he has threatened to go all "thingeys under the names" again!

Absolute for me!  Nice taste, good strength, great bottle design!

Anyone else?

Also, what are the preferences for additions to the spirit?  Diet Coke for me!

 :yikes:

Just got a half bottle from the shop as I was running out of beer and fancied something different. Just Smirnoff, they didn't have much of a range.

no coke as a mixer. I like coke and the addition of vodka makes it taste like horrid coke.

Lemon Fanta or various other sweet fizzy beverages are ok, but if I'm mixing then you might as well go for something imaginative.

I'm on neat tonight.

I went to Poland recently -the home of Vodka.  Drink through a Polish Vodka menu - best night you will ever have.  No mixers, the drink is nice on its own.

Nothing you can buy cheaply in this country is worth drinking.

So what is the best readily available neat apart from travelling to Poland? (queue Chubbs)

I remember having a decent night in a Russian restaurant in Exeter on a fairly vast selection of vodkas. Was expensive but good.

I think it's hidden around by behind the library somewhere, although I can't really remember.

No vodka for me, I'm all for rum, usually on the rocks with a big old squeeze of lime.  Failing that I'd go for a really nice whisky of some kind.

If you're on the look out for new tipples then give the drink in my avater a go - 55% of pure mayhem, and delicious too.  Has to be done neat, either in 2cl shot form or in a big old brandy glass over ice.  French drink made from herbs, yummy!!

Love rum at the moment, its a nice change after a couple of whiskey years. And always used to hate Gin, but the combination of sunny weather and G&T's is a winner.

Tesco value mate. It was a toss up between that and Gordons, and there was a £3 difference for a small bottle.

Try as I might I really cannot get to grips with G&T, think I'm destined to always dislike it, shame as I'd really like to enjoy it.

I found it rank for the first 5 glasses but you've just got to push on through and get your pallate used to it, weird taste. Lime is essential.

I can't remember what its called but there is a Polish cherry flavoured vodka that is to die for, especially when mixed with diet cherry coke (which itself is the greatest invention since sliced bread).

I tried flavouring vodka myself with sweets once and it tasted like shit. Anyone got a fool proof guide to doing it?

The best thing about vodka is that unlike pretty much every other form of alcohol, the cheap stuff tastes exactly the same and gets you drunk the same as the expensive stuff. WINNER

OK, i havent got a lot of time as im about to embark on a journey oop north but here goes.
Vodka (or wodka) should allways be drank without a mixer, in poland its quite offensive to ask for a mixer with a good shot of wodka, the reason is a decent wodka shuold be smooth and easy to drink shot by shot without leaving that burning sensation at the back of the throat, like you get with shitty sainsburys own vodka, a decent, tripple or even 5 times distilled chilled vodka shuoldn't be a problem, but it has to be good quality. If your talking abuot stuff thats redily available in shops than you can go for the classic smirnoff but go for the blue one, or if you want a really nice one tesco's/asda/ sainsburys do a nice polish one called wyborowa, its reasonable priced at 12/13quid a bottle, again nothing something you will buy as pre drinks for a night out but if your having some guests round for dinner or somehting like that, being polish im biased as allways say go for polish wodka rather that russian.
So ye, dont be scarred to drink neat wodka as long as the quailty is good, the first 1 or 2 might hit you a bit but after that its plain sailing.

Another vote for Gery Goose.

In lithuania, the vodka was cheaper than the beer for a triple shot.

I cant drink Vodka anymore since I went to Gran Canaria on a girlie holiday when I was about 19 and we went out drinking with some Irish lads from our hotel - I drank so much "Vodka and White" I had to be carried home by aformentioned Irish men - one on each arm and leg

Just the taste/smell of it now takes me back to how ill I was the next day!!!

Wisniowka !

Buy a bottle of Polish Spiritus (get it in the deli on Groundwell Rd).In a clean screwcap bottle mix equal measures of Spiritus, boiled water which has cooled and Morrello cherry syrup, leave to stand for a couple of days and drink as it is or with ice. Wouldn't fancy mixing it with anything really, spoils it IMO.

I wouldn't recommend drinking the spiritus on its own as it's really a base for making flavoured vodkas, your liver wouldn't thank you for it !.......but then if you're into hallucinating ?

I'm into Southern comfort as a rule, but when in Corfu last year, my missus & mates all went shopping leaving me in the bar (I always refuse point blank to go shopping unless i want something). So spent a few hours in the bar chatting to the nice Irish bar maid, who was giving me most of my drinks FoC. We started experimenting with various vodka's some with mixers & somewithout, but the best was definitely a bluberry flavoured  vodka. The most fun was trying to get the strawberry flavoured one to taste like strawberries & cream. (Took a bout 10 attempts)

Slightly off subject, I had my first ever encounter with large amounts of rum last night.  Needless to say much fun was had, but it has left me feeling slightly delicate.  Even tonight after five beers I still felt off.  The sixth, however, is cheering me up greatly.

Sounds a bit girly.

Not what I like to see on a macho football forum such as the one I find myself on now.

And about the rum... I have found that the darker it is, the worse the hangover. As a result of this research I am off Navy rum forever.

anyone that still wants a liver, ignore what was just said, lethal stuff, even diluted half and half with boiled water althought with cherry its quite moorish., i've took a shot of the stuff need and words cannot explain, its as if you have just drank acid, it burns for ages and ages. dont try it kids. you can get polish spiritus with is about 97.5% proof.

Wisniowka is deadly stuff on a par with some of the worst/strongest Absinth I’ve had.  Mescal miniatures always do me in as well.

The best toffee vodka is made with a simple syrup mixture you buy and mix with bog standard vodka.  Have a sniff online as it’s cracking stuff.

Anyone ever had the chilli vodka in a Revolution bar?

What you really want to do is down 1/2 pint of neat vodka mixed with chilli sauce, somehow I managed to do this after a heavyish night out in freshers week. I was returned to my rightful halls at seven in the morning after puking and pissing everywhere.

Incidentally I've had the chilli vodka in Revs a few times. First time it made me physically ill after about 5 minutes, though I was persuaded to do 2 in a row. Unfortunately as I was only two pints of Guinness into the night I was not pleased with my effort. Pretty sure the memory of my chilli vodka antics a couple of years prior made me gag.

The other times I've been fine, if it wasn't in a vodka stick bought by someone else I wouldn't order it though. I've always found vodka pretty easy going and no matter how many bad experiences it brings you can always go back to it like a sure thing.

We've done it with loads of fruity flavoured sweets, never skittles tho, sounds good.

We made a fruit pastil mix but made the mistake of mixing the flavours. It still tasted ok but looked a bit like river water.

Choose your flavour and stick to it for best results.

I have done that, hmmmmmm nice!

Also for a BBQ, try making a hole in the top of a green water melon 24 hours before the BBQ.  Keep topping up the hole with vodka until the whole bottle has gone, the Melon will absorbe the whole bottle of vodka into it's flesh in the 24 hours.  Cut and serve!  De-lish!  Make sure the kids don't confuse the vodka melon with the non alcoholic version though!

You can speed it up by putting the bottle through the dishwasher, or I suppose in a sink of hot water would do it too.
