Verbal agreements. Not worth the paper they are written on.

Seriously though, happy with that. Seems to have pace and has scored a few. Filling Cox's boots is a big ask and I don't think we should expect it. But add a few more goalscorers in the team and we might do OK covering that department.

Interesting that somebody on that thread mentions Grant Holt. They may be on a wind up, but he has a decent record at L2 level. Not sure what he'd be like in L1 - he had a good season at Forest then seemed to fall out with Calderwood and lose his way. Oh, and he turned down Shitty too!

From the oracle:

Presuming it's accurate those aren't bad stats for a L1 player. Lots of pace as well.

The person who posted about Holt posted his name on another thread as Ethan Gunton, who - when googled - seems to be quite a handy young table tennis player from the Swindon area.

Anyone know if he does work at the CG?

God I must be bored, I'm cyber-sleuthing...

Very poor, should not be starting for the full england team, hes still playing on the strength of the Croatia game, he should be behind Beckham Wright Phillips, Milner & A.Young

Seems to be something strange going on with Walcott. Don't know what but he is nowhere near the player he was before he got injured, maybe he still isn't 100%? But then isn't this part of the reason for playing him in the under 21's?

Glen Johnson got 3, so I think we can rule that out as a yardstick ;)

On a Walcott note, i think i read somewhere that Wenger doesn't see him as a winger anyway, and will begin to move him back into the striker role.

Title: Re: Looks like Robinsons on his way

Alright his form hasn't been great of late but harsh to say "no end product". There was 3 against Croatia i think you'll find.

Theo's strike record looks quite similar to Cox's before he had an even better (excellent!) season this time round. I don't think Theo's end product is lacking at all and would be pleased with this signing.

Title: Re: Looks like Robinsons on his way
Post by: strooood on Thursday, June 18, 2009, 10:59:46
The plan for Theo has always been to get him playing through the middle as a centre forward. Wenger did this with Henry, Wiltord and even Carlos Vela and Jay Simpson.

He's class, but expectations were stupidly raised by the hat-trick, perhaps rightfully so, but he's still learning. Perhaps a regular England berth is a bit much at this stage but his pace is such a huge asset. I recon Capello's putting up with him at the moment because he knows that by the time South Africa swings around he'll be quality there.

I missed the second half, but he must have improved dramatically, as his delivery was over-hit and his over all game poor, capped by a poor penalty. Mind you, both teams looked pretty wank in the first half.

Theo Walcott showed in his brief appearance tonight why he'll play lots more times at senior international football than James Milner will.

The 2nd half saw significant improvement too.

If Robinson does sign for Hudders on monday, let's hope we can move on from this asap.

When OTJ joined Norwich there was a degree of navel gazing from Fitton, i hope it won't

happen this time,as things could degenerate from the 'I told you so' brigade.

Huddersfield are being linked to all sorts of names but are having to settle for League One 'standard'.

L1 appears to be split into several financial groups. Under Danny Wilson we can compete adequately with teams like Southend and Brighton for players (something MM appeared to have struggled with) but we can't compete with the next level of L1 club which Huddersfield currently reside in.

We shouldn't break the bank for Theo Robinson but it sure would be nice to win one of these transfer pursuits :)

Title: Re: Looks like Robinsons on his way
Post by: alanmayes on Saturday, June 27, 2009, 18:51:21
Rich, that's an excellent summary of our current situation in the Transfer market.

I fully understand that Huddersfield have been looking at up and coming young players,
but with their spending power,i'm just surprised that Robinson seems to be a player that
they want. They seem to be linked with loads and loads of players on a daily basis.

I just hope that we can make some quality signings that would reinvigorate the fanbase
and improve the team.I'm probably way too optimistic  ::)

I think its fair to say that Huddersfield are starting to piss me (and probably many others) off. I look forward to their implosion in the not too distant future.

Could have been a good signing, but I'll not lose any sleep over his decision to be swayed by a fatter pay packet. Its grim oooppp north Theo, and enjoy your visit to the CG later in the season (if indeed the inevitable happens).

Disappointed that he's gone to Huddersfield, does Lee Clark just monitor other team sites for transfer inspiration?

That's just a fucking stupid quote. I doubt there's much improvement to be had from a fat 27 year old, so baring in mind Keane is no longer at Sunderland and Dirty Sanchez got relieved of his amusing spending spree at Foolham, I can't imagine there being a Premiership manager stupid enough to take a £1m punt on him. Although i suppose it's always possible he's the next John Hartson...

The last thing we needed was more mercenaries like him.

Too much money. Too many injuries. Not enough sustained first team football. Bad attitude. Didnt want to sign for us anyway.

As soon as he said he was 'going on holiday' rather than signing any fool could see he wasnt interested in the club, just himself.

Need players who actually want to get us promoted. Not enough real men in the squad as it is.

Players like this are extremely rare. To us mere supporters the job of a footballer is a massive privilage but to those that actually make it, its just a job and a way of making quick and easy money. Obviously the boys that play in the top flight and have a realistic chance of trophies do play for glory, but i think the players in the lower leagues are only in it to make as much cash as they can in a job that spans a short career. Who can blame them to be fair.

This is why we lose out on players like OTJ and Robinson.

I dont think I would be able to motivate myself to go to football if I felt the same way as that. Maybe some day I will feel the same as that, and that day I wont go anymore.

Players who were ambitious and in it to win it, werent rare at all when I started watching football.

In fact its only been in the last 18 months where I have questioned the attitude and application of Swindon Town players. Never questioned it before as a team, been watching since 1992. Even in our worst ever teams I thought we had some real fighters and I could see a team spirit shine through.

But it is an issue now, so Wilson will have to sign more determined, more professional and more passionate players to improve the squad.

Greer has replaced Aljofree as captain and Ive got a lot more faith in him as a leader.

Given that Robinson went back on an agreement, albeit verbal, he did us a favour.  D.W. will have back-up plans, and will probably sign a striker that is not prone to missing at a high percentage.

If Huddersfield had done a U-turn at the last minute; would we have signed him anyway, I very much doubt it.

With Huddersfield splashing the cash, every team will want to raise their game against them.  If they have a bad start, there could be a rough time for their management.  The heat is on...........
