Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Arch Stanton on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 20:51:31 I have no doubt that we'd be the same, loads of 'fans' pouring out of the woodwork.
But what wound me up about Reading's plastics was how 'full-on' they all were when they got to the Premier League. I used to work for a company based in Bracknell, only went to the office once a week say and there was a guy there that never mentioned football, didnt even mention it during any passing conversations...and he knew that I was a Swindon fan. Once they were in the prem his desk was all decorated in flags and he had a scarf over his pod, Reading Wallpaper on his PC 'Caution, Reading Fan at Work' sign on the back of his chair.... it was sickening. He even mentioned to me about how good 'Mike' Kitson was and how he would eventually become an England player.... twat. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 20:53:58 But it would be the same here- guaranteed. It would be if we too had a 'shiny' new stadium that people could visit! Its amazing how many people are still 'intimidated' by a trip to the County Ground. If they could combine it with a trip to KFC and Matalan without having to move the car - they'd be beating down the door. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Spencer_White on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 21:14:38 New grounds do make it that bit worse.
Means the plastic brigade are more likely to simply take over. At least with old grounds the proper fans still have their traditions, which sets of fans sit where and so on. For instance, if we were in the top flight I would still expect the Town End to be pretty much the same. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: suttonred on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 21:42:31 Being born in reading i can confirm the plastic tag, is due to most of their fans in previous years being chelsea or west ham fans until we came to town, when their allegiance would switch for 3 hours.

Things that should be banned: part 128. Clubs who list their fans in squad line-ups on the back of match programmes. Reading do that. On their website, they also include fans' pen pix with the description: "Does everything he can to help get goals for the team...blah blah blah." Surely a more realistic description would be: "Fan on loan from Chelsea" Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Rossi on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 22:32:59 I live in Windsor and the number of mates that were Man Utd, Arsenal & Chelsea (armchair) supporters 5/6 years ago, but have now started getting season tickets at Reading because they're doing alright is ridiculous. I think I know 2 people that have been genuine supporters their whole life.
When I ask them why they go to watch Reading, the answer is usually, because it's just down the road and it's Premiership football - basically sums them up Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: pauld on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 22:34:10 Being born in reading i can confirm the plastic tag, is due to most of their fans in previous years being chelsea or west ham fans until we came to town, when their allegiance would switch for 3 hours. That's why I think of them as particularly plastic - always thought of Reading as kind of Chelsea overflow, but then when they got to the Prem, all of a sudden there as all these "die hard" Reading fans crowding and pricing out the old faithfuls who'd stuck out years of shit at Elm Park. Any successful team gets its share of bandwagon armchairs but Reading since they started to challenge for the Prem have struck me as more plastic than most simply because they went from sod all to packed out in no time flat. Admittedly most of this is based on chatting to the one (bitter) old-skool Reading fan I knowTitle: Re: League Playoffs Post by: reeves4england on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 23:02:41 Apparantly next year will be Rochdale's 36th year in the bottom tier. I'd say Reading getting to the playoffs is a good season for them rather than an unacceptable one. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, 08:08:47 Steve Coppell rsigning could be a very good thing imo.How many managers come in and try out the youngsters straight away? Wonder if Madjeski will go now, though I doubt there would be many takers in the current financial climate. Madjeski has been making noises about pulling out for a couple of years, and i would imagine as most of his money is in publishing, he would have been hit by the recession. Could be major changes there as next is the last season they get the parachute and will find it hard to go up next year. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Batch on Thursday, May 14, 2009, 20:51:23 did you know Leeds were once champions of europe? No. You'd have thought the commentators would have kept us informed wouldn't you. Biggest club in division 3, finished third in the prem, Beckford the best striker in the league, and noone mentions it. After the 10th time. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Rich Pullen on Thursday, May 14, 2009, 20:52:01 No points deductions this season - no excuses.

And there's no way they're the biggest club in Division 3 any more. In some cases they are the biggest club, in others perhaps not. However, they cannot keep stating that they're too big for this level because after two attempts they've failed (admirable performance given the deduction but still...) - they are one of us! Unfortunately, the presence of a clutch of larger clubs in the division will mean that fighting for a play off place will be all the harder, but still achievable. Attendances will also be up. Could be an exciting year. Unfortunately, the presence of a clutch of larger clubs in the division will mean that fighting for a play off place will be all the harder, but still achievable. I assume yoyur talking about those coming down: Norwich - big financial problems, will need a clear out and won't be able to spend big on wages - year of struggle S'Hampton - Start on -10 likely to have a mass exsodus of their decent players - assuming they survive a season at the wrong end of the table Charlton - Unknows probably the only ones who may be able to mount a challenge Of the remaiinng teams Leeds will probably be there or there abouts next season, and whoever loses play-off final but a lot of teams are having to cut their cloth so I suspect there will be a few next season that will end up as surpise packages, possibly Exeter until Tisdale get's poached. Seeing their beloved team they've supported all their lives lose a play-off match....wait, sorry, the team they've supported for about 5 mins.... twats..... At work I had a customer who was based in Northampton, he used to go to Sixfields every so often - but when I spoke to him last year he told me he had a season ticket at Stadium MK, what a cunt..... Obviously for any other town, I'd actually be able to name some famous people. But for this shithole, the town has about as much history as the club. Fucking delighted - listened to this on the way home and had to pull over for the pens. Somewhere tonight there's a lorry driver who's wondering whether he should have stopped to see whether the bloke sat in his car in that layby apparently having some kind of fit around the time the Chelsea retread fucked it up needed medical attention. There's something strangely fitting about their undoing coming via a signing that was always more geared to media hype than actual proper football. Now drift away you plastics, drift away. You know you never liked football, just bought into the flash-pan hype so you could try and pretend to be something you'll never understand, so drift away now the promise of bought and stolen success has proven as fake as your claim to a place in the League and allow this abomination to die the slow painful death it has always deserved. Well well Mr Blackwell perhaps if your players had actually tried to play some football they might have put some performances in.Also your whingeing over the weekend about Mike Dean's appointment being "insensitive" because he sent one of your players off earlier in the season, came back to bite didn't it? Blackwell's best comment was about Brian Howard, saying "He had found it hard to settle early on,because he hadn't realised just how big a club Sheff Utd are". Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: ibelieveinmrreeves on Monday, May 25, 2009, 16:08:05 Blackwell really is a bellend. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: alanmayes on Monday, May 25, 2009, 16:16:22 Owen Coyle came across very well on his interview. Interesting if Blackwell is quite so graceful in defeat. Owen Coyle is one of the brightest young managers around. When Burnley won in the play off's at Reading, there were no histrionics from him or lording it. I'm sure that he'll be on the radar of a few clubs and with the news that Strachan has resigned at Celtic and the fact that Coyle came down from Scotland, you have to wonder if they'll want him. Probably one of his twelve steps to swear on national radio. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Luci on Monday, May 25, 2009, 17:21:14 Burnley are probably the most deserved team of promotion this season. Good cup runs and the better team on the day today. Manchester United aside, they have played more games than any other in the football league this season, plus they are team who has used a smaller amount of players to get there. Nice that they knocked Reading out too as some of their fans need knocking down a peg or two. Well done Burnley!
Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Dazzza on Monday, May 25, 2009, 17:23:09 I like the fact Coyle is still playing in the reserve team and scored a screamer a few weeks back. Pleased for T'Burley, well deserved.

I think they have the smallest squad in the championship and have the third smallest wage budget. Perhaps Fitton's using Burnley as an example of what he hopes to achieve at Swindon. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, May 25, 2009, 18:34:54 I'm going to be pedantic, mainly because they are Premiership splitters, but Man Utd are not part of the football league :)
Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Arch Stanton on Monday, May 25, 2009, 18:41:55 I might be wrong here, but didnt Wade Elliott break Keith O' Halloran's leg that ended his career?
I'm sure it was at the away game played in Dorchester, baking hot from what I remember, Evans was in charge. Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: THE FLASH on Monday, May 25, 2009, 22:20:42 Was there today and it was just like turning the clock back to when we turned those Leicester bastards over all those years ago...
Magic... Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: reeves4england on Monday, May 25, 2009, 22:27:49 Cracking goal from Elliott, never thought he looked particularly special when playing for Bournemouth though so whether he'll make the team in the Premiership we'll have to wait and see. Fair play to Burnley.
Title: Re: League Playoffs Post by: Doore on Monday, May 25, 2009, 22:45:28 I missed all the action this weekend - family stuff. Just watched the highlights on ITV - pleased to see a good footballing side like Burnley make it. As for the league 1 final, looked like a great game. I was wondering after his first - why on earth couldn't Alexander do anything like that for us? Is it the same man? I was sure it was some kind of evil twin after he scored a second within two mins. However, having just seen him miss an absolute sitter of a header from 5 yards, I instantly thought - "there's the Alexander we all know". Seriously though, terrific goal.
Just about to see league 2 highlights - hoping for a Shrews win. |
