Title: Northampton
Post by: Arch Stanton on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, 20:44:50
I see Northampton fucked up their game in hand tonight and therefore go to Leeds on Saturday hoping Carlisle don't beat Millwall at home......

Anyone really care who stays up out of Northampton, Carlisle or Brighton?

I'd like to see Brighton go for obvious reasons.

Carlisle, too far north.

Northampton's easy to get to, Brighton is a place I never want to go again, and I've not been up to Carlisle yet. So Brighton to go down would be lovely!

I think Brighton potentially have the easiest game of the three, but hopefully they make a mess of it. :D

Also depends what Leeds and Millwall will do ahead of the play offs i.e. resting players.

Don't really care tbh. Carlisle is a good away day, as was Northampton this season. Brighton's ground is shit but pretty easy to get to and winning there is sweet.

The best four to come up to League one (purely for away travel) = Brentford, Wycombe, Exeter and the Gills.

From a financial viewpoint, Carlisle to go down. Others would bring more support, and our travel costs would be lower.

3rd is still up for grabs for Millwall so they'll probably try to get it and get the 'easier' game in the playoffs.

Yes on goal diff, but there is (I think ) a 5 goal difference for Carlisle to make up so unlikely.

I'd like Brighton to go down, I'll never forgive them for that playoff semi defeat, their fans acted like a bunch of twats, plus it took me a month to dry off after all that bastard rain.

I was a bit annoyed that Northampton lost, cos its always a good place to go! And I feel that they could be for the drop, Leeds is not an easy place to visit and with Carlisle needing to win at home on the last game of the season, its been done before -  I wonder if their goalie is practising scoring goals....a la James Glass...

Looking at the final days fixtures, you'd assume that Brighton will survive.

Brighton v Stockport
Crewe v Leicester
Carlisle v Millwall
Leeds v Northampton

So the scores on the doors -

Brighton 12 votes
Carlisle 5
Northampton 0

No doubt Northampton will go down then....

Well Northampton did go down then, so no more nice visits to Sixfields for at least another season, still got Brunton Park and the bloody Withdean to go to though.....

I'll go to Carlisle away next season as it's close to me... and I'll go to Exeter away because my old flatmate support 'em so I'll visit Devon for the first time since I moved up here.

Havent been to Exeter for donkeys years, I might be up for that.

St James' is a good old-fashioned ground hidden among terraced houses from what I remember? I used to do some contract work down that neck of the woods.

I like the Big Bank behind the goal but we'll be on the other side obviously.

Went there for the friendly in 2007, twas far too hot that day.

I'm intrigued to see how far Tisdale can take them. I wanted him to take over when Malpas left.

Plymouth fans must be breathing the most almighty sighs of relief... not so long they were saying that it's unlikely they'll ever play against eachother in the league again - doesn't seem such a crazy thought for them these days.

He deserves a medal for knocking Oxford out of the conference playoffs.

I think he's obviously got the ability, but I don't know enough about them - whether they've got the cash or an attractive enough set-up to get in some good players and maybe improve in a few areas. They've also got to fend off any vultures that may be circling their players, they've obviously got a few good ones.

Fair play to them really.

Tisdale wears a cravat   8)  And i'm a tiny bit in love with him because of it.

Exeter is another enjoyable away day to look forward to.I went to the friendly a couple of seasons ago and it was good, will be even better for a league game.

Depending on the date, Exeter away could be a great day out!Shame Northampton went down, as it's a tidy little ground in easy reach with a decent enough away end

I could take you tef people on a tour of houses I used to live in. Few of them are well close to the ground.

I used to frequent The Black Horse before watching Exeter, used to get some good cheap food in there.

Tidy Pub. Used to pop in there on occasions, generally on the way to other places I think.

I like Exeter centre...like the way the citys been built around the cathedral and old wall...driving to Exeter usualy involves a drop at Exotic Marsh Barton(not)..but ocasionly i pop into the centre and it reminds me of Lincoln alot.

I'm only really familiar with Middlemoor and the outlying areas of Exeter, cos I used to do work for Devon & Cornwall Police and Aggregate Industries. I only saw the city in parts but it was always an easy place to get to!

I've lunched at Sowton Services too many times to mention (depressingly)

Personally I think its a bit drab. The main high street is very much a 1960s style concrete monstrosity, or atleast it was when I was last there

Exeter is a great city. Well happy to see them up.

Never deserved to be out of the league. Theyve just got to watch it doesnt go to their heads now, and start thinking they should gamble on another promotion. Happens so often after successive promotions that chairman think they cant go wrong and rack up a massive debt.

Yep. If I were them I'd happily settle for finishing 20th next season - staying up has to be the priority

I can't recall Exeter having been as high as the second tier....I'd imagine they'll be happy to hang around in L1 for a bit...they'll be on my list of relegation candidates.

We haven't played them in a league game since 85/86, so that'll be fun.

I really love the games at Exeter, easy ground to get to, less than 30 miles from me :) always have good games against them, the only slight minus point is that its an open bank that loses a lot of atmosphere....the new home end is awesome though and can create loads of noise.

Think all 4 that come up may find it hard to stay up, be ones around the bottom this year again, Yeovil, orient and Hartlepool, plus Oldham i reckon also.

Teams which come up quickly from the conference tend to do OK for a season or so before dropping down don't they?

I'm not sure what I'm basing that on other than a feeling of vague chance that there's some evidence to back that statement up.

I think the reason is that there is very little difference between most of the Conference and most of League 2, so they can do well.  League 1 is a larger step up.  We saw in Phil Smith a player who did well in League 2 (after signing form non-league) but has struggled in League 1 (until recently).  His recent good form may mean he's improved from that Conference/League 2 level.  I hope so.

Title: Re: Northampton

Sorry. I meant quickly up from conference to league 1 do alright for a season or two.

Title: Re: Northampton
Post by: donkey on Sunday, May 3, 2009, 12:24:44
Oh, OK.  In that case, they do well on a run of success, which sustains them beyond their means for a season or two, until the reality of the size of their crowds and budgets catch up with them (when their best players leave for better money, and they can't replace them).  How's that?

Title: Re: Northampton
Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, May 3, 2009, 12:26:00

Along with Exeter - Yeovil, Cheltenham, Doncaster, Carlisle, Rushden have done quick promotions after leaving Non-League.
