Help for Heroes is probably the most worthy charity there is at the moment and I for one will be donating a £20 note.

Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: Batch on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 13:19:55 Quote TOWN supporters are being urged to put West Country rivalries to one side on Saturday and join forces to provide Help for Heroes. Swindon take on Bristol Rovers at the County Ground (noon kick-off), knowing that three points can effectively secure their safety from the League One drop. But the clash is also being used to try and help raise more than £10,000 for the Help for Heroes charity, which looks after service personnel wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. While the derby has occasionally spilled over into violence in recent seasons, STFC Football in the Community development officer Shane Hewlett has called on fans to look at the bigger picture. “Come out and support the club because it’s a massive day for us,” he said. “If we win we are pretty much safe, but it is not just about the football. “It would be great to put everything else to one side for one day. We want to get the message across that we don’t want people who are going to cause trouble. “By the time people get there and see what is happening, hopefully it will put things into perspective. “While we are watching a football match there are people out there who are being shot at and losing their lives. “People are going to be at the game who have got first-hand experience of that or family members involved out there, and it would be great to leave aside the hostilities. “It is a massive game for the club and three points would be brilliant to make us safe. “Hopefully we can pull this event off, and if it the day goes trouble free as well then it would be perfect.” A range of events have been planned for the day including a 30-piece RAF band, a guard of honour, more than 60 youngsters getting involved whose parents have served in the armed forces, 5,000 Union Jack flags donated by Trak Employment Solutions and goody bags supplied by Coca-Cola. Hewlett, who has been the driving force behind Town’s Help for Heroes campaign, added: “We want people to arrive early - we want to get them into the ground to turn it into a carnival and help turn up the atmosphere before a massive game. “Even if you don’t love football, come along because it is a great event to help raise as much money as possible for such a worthwhile cause.” Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 13:33:55 oooooooooh I hope I get a flag

But glad the clubs are supporting it. But how is the money going to be raised ? I'm pretty sure the gate receipts aren't being donatedTitle: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: Ironside on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 15:27:45 In a way help for heroes makes me a tad upset as I think really there should not need to be a charity for this - it should be done automatically by the goverment anyway I quite agree but unfortunately the Labour party are busy spunking our tax money on diversity co-ordinators and expenses. Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: pauld on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 16:30:28 I quite agree but unfortunately the Labour party are busy spunking our tax money on paying for the mess created by the City boys, thanks to the legacy of Thatcher's market crazy economics which I so admired at the time Think that's what you meantTitle: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 16:31:51 Oh god another politics thread
Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: sheepshagger on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 16:37:55 funnily enough you are both right - how often does that happen :):):)
JFW - you are right though - any and every government should have this sorted out and paid for without the need for charities..... Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: reeves4england on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 16:44:43 Oh god another politics thread You moan now, but when you can't afford a loaf of bread you'll be all for a moan about the government! ;)Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: pauld on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 16:47:44 Oh god another politics thread You started it! I was just winding up our resident cross-burner :)But you are right though, the government of whichever party should be doing this. But as they aren't, shoulds aren't a lot of help to the lads who need help, so I hope everyone will be following Ironside's lead and chucking some folding in the bucket. Ironside's lot tried this in the 30's...didn't work out too well. On a lighter note couldn't we turn the day into an It's a Knockout type event, with Ironside trying to invade the Stratton Bank and everyone else throwing buckets of custard at him? :fish: Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: leefer on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 22:23:05 It's a great cause, but I don't see many Derby fans making the trip for it like it!!...... Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: Ironside on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 23:23:56 Think that's what you meant That's true too but I didn't want to go too deap into the why's and the wherfore's. The fact it is, the men and women who serve in the armed forces deserve nothing but the best, especially when they come back seriously injured. They're people, like you, like me and they've made the sacrifice. I'll always stand injured ex-services a pint. It's least I can do. EDIT: BArely a post goes by without some kind of snidey comment eh Reg? I guess by the point of your post you are against the support for Help for Heroes this wekend? You're suppossed to be a grown up, fucking act like one you twat. Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: Ironside on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 23:32:49 Just in case anyone can't make the game on Saturday, you can contribute here: www.helpforheroes.org.uk
It's worth it. Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: Lumps on Thursday, April 23, 2009, 14:05:30 Maybe we could just stop sending them into unwinnable, unjustifiable wars with inadequate equipment?

I ain't going to comment on the first two points, but perhaps if the government allocated a sufficient amount of money for adequate equipment rather than spunking up expenses on 550 quid sinks from Habitat for your sister's spare room, we might be able to do something about it.....Title: Re: Adver News: Unite for the cause, club urges derby fans Post by: chalkies_shorts on Thursday, April 23, 2009, 21:02:49 Maybe we could just stop sending them into unwinnable, unjustifiable wars with inadequate equipment? Regardless of the side of the fence you sit on with this argument does not alter the fact that these soldiers are shitilly treated and as soldiers they do not decide the fight. Also, I can't remember Maggie looking after the Falklands vets particularly well. All the major parties treat our soldoers in a fucking shabby manner and have always done and always will. |
