Title: Krakow
Post by: Doore on Monday, April 20, 2009, 22:58:04
Hi people

I'm off to Krakow next week for a four day break with the woman.  Has anyone been?  I've done plenty of research and have a lot of plans, but any experiences you have had there would be gratefully received.

i wouldnt say there are any hidden treasures really, so whatever the books say, do that, a visit to the salt mine is a must as is aushwitz (sp) and then you have the main square which is a nice part, check out sukienice which is the traditional market, try and find the milk bars and you must try the local grub.

Hotel is on the main square.  Auschwitz and the salt mines are definitely on the list.  I'll check out that traditional market.  Local grub is always a must but I must say I'm scared of all the vodka.  Vodka is bad for me.

I've been to Krakow and Gdansk and have to say I loved both of these cities.

The main square in Krakow is very nice and there are lots of bars and restaurents. The local beer and food is excellent although the hospitality can be a bit hit and miss as I got the impression that the locals were fed up of tourists visiting - I am guessing that this is more to do with Stag parties misbehaving.

Aushwitz is a must as well.

Is this supposed to be a nice romantic weekend for two?

Because so far the forum's recommendations have been a salt mine and a concentration camp............

Wawel Castle is worth a visit too.

And as chubbs said - try the local food - pierogi are delicious

I think Doores idea of a romantic break might somewhat differ to his missus'...

I loved the place.

Wierzynek (restaurant) is well worth a posh nosh night out.

Market is well worth a sniff, Aushwitz really is a must it has to be seen at least once in your life.

Shopping is excellent and I'd highly recommend stocking up on vodka.  Poland produce some of the best vodkas in the world.

Aside from that aim for accomodation as central as possible to the main square.

As a footnote to this - Krakow is a beautiful, friendly, lively city full of history and culture.  I highly recommend the place.

That is all.
