Title: Children's Books
Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, April 19, 2009, 15:45:30
Been babysitting most of the weekend so have had great fun reading a couple of classics.

Hairy Maclary From Donaldson’s Dairy is absolutely brilliant, but this weekend it was all about it's underrated sequel Hairy Maclary's Bone. It's a very flexible piece of literature which can be read in a number of styles. My favourite is in early 90's hip hop style. Good times.

On the other hand, I find the much rated Peepo! incredibly boring. Yawn city.

a slight improvement on its excellent predecessor, Elephant Wellyphant.

Its all about Dr Seuss.  Cat in the hat and its fine sequel, the cat in the hat comes back just a couple of classics along with his 'sleep' book.

Where The Wild Things Are.

And more recently Dear Zoo. The delight of making animal noises doesn't really fade.

Dear Zoo doesn't make any fucking sense. If I wrote to the zoo asking for a pet I'm pretty sure I'd get told to fuck right off. They certainly wouldn't ship me out a variety of exotic animals.

Gruffalo and Bear Hunt are ace.

Where's my Mum? and Rumble in the Jungle are right up there too.

Tried reading a 'classic' with the lad the other week - Beatrix Potters Peter Rabbit series. It's sooooo bloody boring. It's from a different time I suppose, where people used to get pleasure from a lump of coal at Christmas, or made their own games up with nothing more than pebbles and a stick.

Give me a Gruffalo or a Horrid Henry any day of the weel

My boys quite enjoyed Peter Rabbit but mainly I think because I did McGregor in a comedy mad Scotsman voice. sheepshagger's right about Dinosaur Rumpus as well, although I get told off for doing it rap stylee and shouting the "chorus". On which theme, Harry and the bucketful of dinosaurs is also boss.
