Title: Magazines
Post by: Spy on Friday, April 10, 2009, 10:25:12
What magasines do people read and do they think they're any good?

I buy bizarre every month and like it a lot.

Sometimes I will buy either Empire or Total Film but tend to think the feature articles and interviews are very boring and I don't read it cover to cover. Stuff like 50 greatest such-and-such films ever lists interest me as do news and the reviews. Think maybe Total Film is a better read but 5 stars from Empire seems to mean more, I guess just cos its more established.

If I want a music magazine I'll usually get Kerrang altho I don't buy it often. Its cheaper than Metal Hammer but Metal Hammer is better. Kerrang pander to a young audience and seem to just stick lame bands on the cover cos they're popular and the writers probably don't even like them. I've bought Q a few times and its OK but I'm not really into many mainstream rock\indie bands so its not for me really. I deteste NME... probably would have liked it when it was opinonated and political in the eighties but was too young to read it then.

As with the lists if any film\music magazine does a special edition on a certain topic I'm a sucker for that. I remember I think it was Empire did a 50 greatest sci-fi films ever special where there wrere no normal articles, just a double page on each film with a big pic and a comment on how the film impacted on the genre or whatever, Im a sucker for that kind of thing.

Also, I will admit when my girlfriend has heat or whatever I look at it even though its bullshit and that culture is totally loathsome.

i only buy magazines for flights now. usually either buy fourfourtwo or the wisden cricketer.

i used to read NME but over time it became less and less interesting as my taste in music had changed from what NME covered... there wasn't really any other music mags worth reading after that.

I get 442 with the match day program and put it by the toilet to read whilst I am having a sit down.

Incidentally I didn't ever buy it before the sponsorship was announced in the summer of 2008.

Every once in a while I will buy Empire as well if I want to read about films and stuff.

That is about it really. All my music learning and enthusiasm is acquired from blogs and webzines; a far more efficient method of exploring this art in my opinion.

I like DnB a lot and have bought Knowledge mag a few times. Its good there is a mag dedicated to it but its the most serious thing you'd ever read. It takes itself relentlessly serious.

Knowledge is decent, I think atm is still around too. I used to take the free mix CD's.

Never buy magazines. When I was younger I'd get Match every week, plus a computer game one once a month, religiously. Seeing as Oxford aren't mentioned in Match and I only ever play 2 computer games, its not really worth it any more.

I started getting FourFourTwo this year after the sponsorship deal but lost interest when the Swindon-related articles got lame. I used to get Shoot when I was younger.
