Still be a good move for Cox, possibly up and coming team, not too far from his home in Reading.

I think I am resigned he will leave now so as long as we get a good deal I dont care.

I think if Cox goes we will go down next season so it's almost worth going down this season, build a bit of momentum and come back up full of confidence next season (assuming we can come straight back up again), We will likely have a much difference squad so may take some time to gel as well... will be interesting to see how it plays out. How much do Rovers want for Rickie Lambert? Get 2.5 for cox offer 1M for Lambert :D

What a fucking daft thing to say - "If Cox goes we will go down next season" !

What utter bollocks !

Who is to say we are not going to get £2 Million for him that might be used purely to buy new players ?

I would rather have 6-7 new players that could possibly do a great job for us than trying to hold onto 1 player alone.....

But to say we are down next season without him is fucking tripe !

If the fee is £2m, STFC won't see £2m of it. Fitton will want some, Reading will be owed some etc...

You're right though. Saying Cox leaving will send us down is bollocks, as we have no idea what the team is going to look like next season

It's still a bit of a silly thing to say though Gaz.

My outlook is that whatever we get for Cox, Wilson should hopefully get some of it to rebuild. I reckon just £100k would get us 2 or 3 good League One/lower Championship type players. That could be all we need to be a safe mid-table team next season.

Ok perhaps I should have worded it, if we sell Cox and don't get a decent replacement I think we will be down. Hence the reference to Lambert etc... (Not taht we would get him anyway) . Shrewsbury's Holt may be on the move as well!

When we sell Cox we should go and get that nippy little bloke from Hereford on loan from Man Utd, I was very impressed with him he gave our defence a hard afternoon, now what's his name, begins with B I think. Paynter and a nippy small striker would do well next year imo.

We may be debt free but that doesn't mean we're not strapped for cash.

I was under the impression that the money is there if we need it and there is a good justification. Wilson obviously persuaded Fitton that he needed to bring in a few players on loan to keep us up, Fitton agreed and came up with the cash - at one point they were saying we had to offload players first (and that didn't happen).

Same for if there are players worth signing - if there were a full team of players as good as Cox available for £300k each then I reckon Fitton would come up with the cash. If Cox is sold the money will stay in the bank until Wilson can convince Fitton there is someone worth signing, we might spend none of it or we might spend more.

So basically, we're not strapped for cash but Fitton isn't willing to piss cash away either. Which is fine with me.

Its a shame Pilkington went to Uddersfield. Along with Delph the best I've seen this season and for £500k a bargain. I know he played on the wing but could easily play central or just move big Billy up further.

Although he doesnt seem to have scored many this season Andy Bishop has generally got alot of goals the last couple of seasons.

Unless RAZAK makes the breakthrough before the season closes.

In fact I would quite like him to score the winner v Rovers.

A couple of people have mentioned Tom Craddock at Luton. I dont understand why such a promising youngster agreed a three year deal with club certain to be relegated, and since when do luton have £80000 to spend on a player. I wouldnt mind having a closer look at him.

Also, there is a kiddy, JAmes Norwood, who plays for Eastbourne Town who has had alot of big clubs sniffing, he would be dirt cheap and worth a trial, but obviously not an immediate solution.

You need to read the interview with fitton in Monday's matchday programme to find out the answers to a lot of unanswered questions on this thread...

Gazz, I have to disagree with you on two counts.

1. the board members do have money, but if you think they're going to thow any of it at the club, then you haven't been paying any attention. They want to get the club running on an even keel, not surviving on their own money.

2. If cox goes, we will have an excellent chance of doing very well next season. even if he goes for £1.5m, and after fitton takes his money back and reading take their sell on fee, that's still a lot of money to spend on players we haven't had for some years. cox cost £20ok, sam £50k, so why will we not buy decent players again? Have you not seen enough from Wilson's eye to not suggest he knows a good players when he sees one?

also bear in mind that there are going to be a lot of players out of ontract this summer, if we stay up and act early, and we already have transfer targets in mind, there's every chance we will have a very promising squad next year.

Good post Juddie, the board did make it clear that we would get the club that we could afford. Cox is gone - there is no doubt and giood luck to the fella. I'm more optimistic about next season than I am for the rest of this. Wilson should be able to get rid of a load of fucking dross we've been lumbered with. He'll also have had a full pre season and  other clubs of our stature will be in shit street.

Title: Re: Latest Cox rumour

it's not rocket science. Fitton doesn't want Cox to go just as any of us don't, but if clubs are looking at him, and people are talking about £1.5m at least, then he's not stupid. what would you rather, keep Cox and shop around for bargains, or sell him for the highest price and build a shit hot suqad under a manager who knows what he's doing?

The one thing everyone is forgetting here is whether or not cox himself wants to go. Maybe, just maybe, he doesn't.

Either way, we either keep cox and his goals, or we lose him and get a better team next year.

whatever happens, as long as we stay up, next season will be infinitely  better than this one IMO.

For Febian Brandy see Jo Kuffour. Skilful yes, but not what you need to get out of League One. There's a reason why he's on loan at Hereford...

I see a lot of him in the reserves for United and he is not strong/big enough.

The win-win situation for me would be to get 2M for Coxy before the end of June.

It'll be hopeless if he doesn't leave until the end of August as Wilson (assuming he's still here) will have little time to replace him/rebuild the squad.

I'd rather he stayed and we built a team around him, but I think I've just overdosed on Easter Eggs.....

Before it came out in the press, I posted about a week before that Cox was going to Leicester next season.
So the info I received was pretty good, now QPR have entered the arena, that might change things, Coxy would not have to up stumps for him and his family.

Don't think Coxy will go to a premier club, he has already stated he does not want to move to a bigger club just to keep the bench warm, same situation he had at Reading when they were in the Premier and he couldn't demand a regular squad place. If Reading do not go up this season, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they made a bid for him to return.

Cox pretty much said a couple weeks ago on Big league weekend 2, that he knows he can play at a higher level and wants to play at a higher level but its up to the 2 clubs to sort it out at the end of the season. Read into that what you will, but we knew that anyway. Best case is that he stays and see what kind of squad we have next season. if we are in or around the playoffs he may go up with us otherwise leave in January. Sadly I think he will be gone in the Summer its just a case of who to.

I don't buy programmes so won't know what is coming out..

1. the board members do have money, but if you think they're going to thow any of it at the club, then you haven't been paying any attention. They want to get the club running on an even keel, not surviving on their own money.
I haven't said anything about the board throwing money at the club, what I was referring to is that because we actually have a valuable assett (Cox) we are not skint. He will be sold on eventually anyway, if we were "cash strapped" as the article says we would be actively shopping Cox, which we are not.

If cox goes, we will have an excellent chance of doing very well next season.
We do have a great chance of doing well, but we also have a chance as well as being pants. Paynter has played a lot better under Wilson IMO, but is never going to be a 20-25 goal scorer. MOST teams that do well have a good 20 goal average a season striker, admittedly our problems stem deeper than that, Midfield, Defence, Goalkeeping etc. I really hope that we can go into next season with a totally new squad with fresh ideas. I hope that like Malpas though we don't hang around and have to re-sign half the tripe we have now just to fill spaces. I think our squad next year depends how quickly we get out the starting blocks as you state and start replacing the shit players from this season. We have seen numourous threads about who should come/go etc.. I dare say there will be a bit of money to spend as well once the squad is reduced. Not massive amounts. In regards to Fitton he did say if he sees someone who we could sell on in the future we would buy them... Holt anyone to replace Cox? Although Shrews will likely be asking for a silly pricetag.[/quote]

Title: Re: Latest Cox rumour
Post by: Simon Pieman on Friday, April 10, 2009, 09:51:01
But we are tight for cash because the owners aren't going to top up the money indefinitely. Watkins said in the paper the other week (think it was The Times) that they've lost money on advertisement/sponsorship deals and also on corporate hospitatility.

Fitton's said we will sell this year if the right offer comes along, but it is likely. Why on earth would he need to say that at the AGM if money wasn't tight?

I'd also like to say I am not moaning that Cox will be sold, he's turned out to be a good investment and I think he deserves more than us. If we can get a decent amount for him and put a decent amount back into the team we'll be better off on the whole.

Title: Re: Latest Cox rumour

You're right Si, I don't see it as a bad thing if Cox goes. We will have made money on him, and we can rebuild. We don't have to be a one-man team anymore.

"I don't buy programmes so won't know what is coming out.."

Well I suggest on this occassion you do! I had the pleasure of spending half an hour in his company, and he was fairly forthright on a number of issues.

"I haven't said anything about the board throwing money at the club, what I was referring to is that because we actually have a valuable assett (Cox) we are not skint. He will be sold on eventually anyway, if we were "cash strapped" as the article says we would be actively shopping Cox, which we are not."

I'll give you that, although the club is still not running on an even keel.

"We do have a great chance of doing well, but we also have a chance as well as being pants. Paynter has played a lot better under Wilson IMO, but is never going to be a 20-25 goal scorer. MOST teams that do well have a good 20 goal average a season striker, admittedly our problems stem deeper than that, Midfield, Defence, Goalkeeping etc."
Like I say, read what Fitton says. If we stay up him and Wilson already know the new spine they want.

If he has to go, I hope there are at least two clubs interested, & it starts a bidding war. IMHO, he is worth 2.5 million at least. Young 30 goal a season strikers are rare.
My understanding is that the board have the money, & will make it available if nessecary for the right player. Whilst I doubt that has changed in essence, I think the change in the economy, must make it a tougher. They have however always said that they want to run the club properly, with it surviving on it's own two feet.
Gordon Greer's extention to his loan deal was paid for by us the supporters though the Red Army Fund. The reason I say this is because whilst their is no doubt that we have some good guys in charge at SN1, it's also up to us the supporters to show support too.

I think you will be seriously disappointed if you are expecting GBP2.5m for Cox.

Also, the board may have said in the past that they were willing to dig deep to splash money on players, but this was before we failed to hit 6k, and so the true potential of the club was revealed to them.

Like Cox, Maynard is a good player, but I would warrant that the reason that he cost so much was because it was perennial panic-buyers Bristol City on the other end of the transaction.

Being realistic, £1.5m is what we'll get for him. A club record fee.

I'm sure Cox could fetch £2m plus add-on's, there's enough clubs interested in him for us not to take the first offer but sit and wait for the right offer - and as we technically do not need to sell that makes him worth that bit more as well.

Coxy has tried his socks off all season, until - the last three or so games, it seems like he is just going through the motions now.

Farewell Cox for sure at the end of the season, all the best you have been a star.

Really?

I'm not so sure. To judge Cox purely on the basis of today's game would be harsh. He had little service, no support when on the ball, and was crowded out by the defence every time he went near the box. The problem was that the rest of the team failed to take advantage of teh gaps that were left open by it.

If Morrison does go and we get a few 100k for him that goes back into the squad then it's a no brainer. There are plenty of average to good experienced league 1 defenders around that you could pick up in the current climate for alot less.
Morrison may be very good one day but at the moment he would be easily replaced so I'm not worried either way if he is off.

Doesn't always work that way though does it....James Williams looked a really good prospect at 16, had fallen off the radar by 20.

Robin Hulbert looked a likely lad...he's still a pro about 10 or more years after making his debut for us, in which he's played approx 100 league games.

At one point we loaned him to Newcastle, when they were a CL club around late 90's.

Cox made his debut for Swindon as a permanent signing in Swindon's 21-16 loss away to Huddersfield Town on 9 February 2008,[14] and scored his first goal in the following game, a 44-6 home victory over Cheltenham Town.[15] He has since scored 3 hat-tricks, all away from home, against Hartlepool Wanderers, Scunthorpe Engineers and Northampton Cobblerwobbles. On the 38th January 2029, it was reported that Cox was wanted by Feltchham and Bolton Wingnuts for a fee believed to be in the region of 67p and a bag of Skips prawn cocktail flavour.[

It was also reported in April 2009 that Leicester City and Celtic F.C are both preparing £22million bids for Cox at the end of the current season

Cox was on BBC RWS earlier and was pressed on what his plans were. Started off by saying "it's not always down to the player" and ended up conceding that if a good offer came along he'd be silly not to go. Which is what we know anyway.

Regardless he didn't really come across as the big I am, and was more concerned about tomorrows game.

They also sought the opinions of a Mr R Tuck n'all.....

Quote from Skysports regarding Mowbray watching Cox against Orient -

Firstly, Mowbray has run the rule over Swindon's promising young forward Simon Cox.

He said: "The day I went to watch him they got beat 1-0 by Leyton Orient and he didn't influence the game much.

"You are assuming he is the player I went to see. I didn't walk around with a big sticker on my forehead saying 'I am watching Simon Cox'

"I understand the boy Cox has scored lots of goals. I wasn't impressed on the one day I saw him and yet the game before, when a member of my stafff watched Swindon play at Northampton, he scored a hat-trick.

Title: Re: Latest Cox rumour
Post by: Power to people on Friday, April 24, 2009, 13:51:39
I'm sure Cox is in no hurry to leave, this is his first full season and he has done well go elsewhere and it is unknown territory and Swindon have ambitions for next season (assuming we survive in L1) as well, and have now got a decent manager but obviously if a top Championship team comes in for him and the deal is good for both sides then he will obviously want to realise his ambitions and move on like any other player.

I'm sure that Cox will sign a new contract as well if he is still here in the summer.

I just wish Mowbray would either put up or shut up about Cox, he is either interested or he's not, remember he is under contract elsewhere, would he be happy with premiership teams talking about his players ?

It will be a good move for him as well, likely to be their main striker and they're bound to be at the top of the table.

I'd agree, but West Brom would surely be targeting a return to the Prem straight away - I can't see Coxy being that prolific in the Prem, personally.  If he was to be the main striker, then I would expect it to be in the Championship and probably a bit part in the Prem.

I read somewhere Mowbray had said he'd been put off him, good move for him if it is the baggies he goes to. Don't think going to Scotland would do him any favours, their top-flight football is only a small step-up from our division, its getting better though.

C'mon! Say what you want about the SPL because it isn't great but a move to Celtic would mean Champions League football for a start!

But obviously that rumour is probably rubbish.

Suppose your right, i forgot about Europe :-[.

If he doesn't want to play the premiership yet, he shouldn't want to play in Europe.

Mowbray said sometihng along the lines of Cox is a player WBA have been watching. When Mowbray went to watch him personally he didnt play well and didnt get a sniff (against Leyton Orient) but when one of the WBA scouts watched him he scored a hat trick.

In our reserves wasn't it. Hasn't proved himself in the first team though. So theorectically, Mowbrays scout saw Cox get a hat-trick, and to sign him up would be stupid 'cause he'l be like Razak and not be very good in the baggies first team. So they should let him stay here. :D
