Title: It's Friday Night
Post by: flammableBen on Friday, April 3, 2009, 21:21:11
and I'm babysitting.

Happy days.

It's all good though. Prepaid with 10 Lambo Buterlinos. Making good headway into about 5 litres of cider left over from last night, and there hasn't been a peep out of the little tyke since he went to bed nearly 3 and a half hours ago.

Only the Tesco brand cheap dry cider 5.3% stuff, don't think white ace and babysitting mix.

Hehe, I said I'd be a good moral guardian to a vicar or priest or something at my nephews christening. I can't wait until he's old enough and I can be the ace uncle who lets him get pissed. I reckon 7 is a good age.

I like my play in all 3 though, it was a rebuy tournament and playing pretty loose aggressive so the first two were pretty strong hands for the situation and the last one I was trying to get a loose call  by someone thinking I was tilting which went to plan at first.

Ben, I have a question.  How do you live with the hangover of all of that cheap cider?  I only have to have a couple of pooter portions Magners to feel the ill effects the next day.

I dunno really. Back when I was drinking incredibly-lots-too-much instead of just far-too-much as it probably is now, I used to generally stay above the pissed level to never really notice.

More recently I've found that getting up and sort of just half making the effort to get your system going works wonders. I doubt you want to go and do a gruelling day at work, but forcing yourself to getting up earlier than you want (before it kicks in horribly at the drymouth but feeling too sick to get up and rehy stage) and making a cup of tea. Maybe doing something simple to get the brain going, I like to do the washing up from the night before, or make angry early morning posts on here.

I guess my hangover philosophy goes against the standard advice of drinking loads of water before you go to bed - I find that makes me just need a piss all night. I go with limiting myself to 5-6 hours sleep and fixing the dehydration just as the drunkenness is wearing off in the morning.

I don't find there being much difference in hangovers with what I drink, although that may be because my main two tipples are cheap strong white cider and red wine. I find that the beer hangover seems to hit quicker and shorter, like feeling a little bit off at 5-6pm if you have 3-4 pints at lunchtime.

I like my play in all 3 though, it was a rebuy tournament and playing pretty loose aggressive so the first two were pretty strong hands for the situation and the last one I was trying to get a loose call  by someone thinking I was tilting which went to plan at first.

Rebuys encourage loose aggressive play so is it the best way to play if everybody else is doing it? Surely the best way to play is taking advantage of the loose aggressive play and draw people in when you hit, although of course you can't ever getting the nuts so you have to have a balance.

I only browsed the history quickly so might have missed something but...

I think the auto-all-in on high pairs is a bit lazy, and the psychology behind it isn't so much doing the best thing, but saving yourself from a hard poker decision and eventually having to put it down by putting the whole thing on automatic. Probably even worse on rebuys because people aren't out if they call and lose.

Would you have gone all in on the tens if there weren't rebuys? (or unless the tournament was for a small amount an you're fucking about.) Tens are a fucking horrible hand, mainly because they can be hard to put down. Surely it's better to have the chance to put them down with a decent bet seeing where you are on the flop that just chucking it all in and hoping the board doesn't high card up too much? The fact that there's the oppurtunity too rebuy means that you're worse off than going all in without rebuys (for the hand), you're going to get more speculative calls with the mediocre high card set ups (QK, KJ, 10K etc).

The KK beat bytwo pair was a bit harsh, but then again you're still looking at a gamble with an A. I'm guessing mr. JQ probably wouldn't have called if there wasn't rebuys either.

You had position on the last hand (I think), but that's even more reason to put in a decent raise. The all-in seems a bit unnecessary.

Saying that. I haven't played poker for ages. My knowledge comes from watching a mate play a bit and questioning what he's doing. He still confuses me sometimes so I'm possibly missing something. And that was awfully typed out too. Sorry.

I wasn't really playing that loose or aggressive myself but it means that a raise and a cold call could be a wide range of hands. In the first hand I wouldn't always defend my blind with king ten offsuit but it was a small raise and there were antes so I made a pretty loose call, I like the flop check raise because I'll get looked up by draws and weaker pairs putting me on a flush draw/combo draw (which I would often play like this).

The second hand the raise was from a loose raiser and the caller was pretty loose too so TT was way ahead of the range of hands they could have, I definitely think a reraise is best for value and I actually disagree about TT being a horrible hand, it's one of my favourite hands and it's been very profitable for me (I have poker tracker so I know which hands make me the most). It can be tough to play post flop though, particularly with relatively low stack sizes as here where you can't just call hoping to flop a set. The all in seems large but tulipaner barely has over 30 blinds and girelli has less than 20 which isn't much really when there are already a lot of chips in the pot. Any decent sized reraise is going to commit me and an all in looks more like ak or aq so lower pairs may call which I'm an 80% favourite over so I think an all in is by far the best play especially as I'm out of position and post flop could be a pretty tough decision in a 3 way pot so I was pretty happy to be all in as a 57% favourite over ak with a lot of lovely dead money.

Third hand I only have 13 blinds so if I raise here there's not going to be much more than the pot left on the flop anyway (and I think limping is pretty terrible here) in position I would generally raise to 500 or 600 normally anyway but given I'd just lost a big pot I thought that an instant all in would seem weaker and I'm pretty sure that's the main reason I was called by qj as well as it being a rebuy as that player wasn't particularly loose.

I think the first hand is easily the most marginal hand although I won this time but the last two although there are other ways to play it I don't think they're necessarily better.
I definitely don't just always go all in with high pairs though but in tournaments with fast blind levels as this one had, it's often the best play after a raise and a couple of calls once the antes have come in.

I mainly play cash but I am up about $3,000 in tournaments mainly turbo sit and gos so I'm pretty comfortable playing them.

Back in the day the TEF would be well busy at 2.50am. Everybody seems to have jobs and lives, and the new student contingent don't seem to be hitting the skintness as often.

Poor effort all round

You're a throwback to bygone era fB, when all any self respecting student wanted to do was overthrow the fascist state, replace it with a green anarcho-syndicalist system of governance, down massive cocktails of pharmaceuticals, and shag as many birds called Isobel as possible.

If this led to dropping out or being thrown out so much the better.

I've read on here some of the current contingent spend their evenings in something called a library....and miss matches to do something called revision.

I salute you!

I seem to suffer from a sort of drinking typing diarrhoea, the next morning re-read of the night before's posts is often a bit of a cringe worthy affair. Whilst I'm quite proud of the readability of my drunken thoughts, the eloquence is nearly always in contradiction to the absolute bollocks I'm spouting.

I thank you for your kind words though Berniman. I'll try and keep up the cheap booze intake, not only to fuel my drunken ramblings, but because sobriety is shit.

No worries tonight though! Sunday means red wine to have with my Sunday dinner. The roast beef has been travelling through my digestive system for some time now, but there's still a healthy amount of red to keep me going. Actually I'm not sure how much there is left. I'm sure it will keep me going.

I was in charge of gravy for my roast dinner today. It was very good. So good that I got through quite a lot of it before we started eating. Got to have a spoonful to test for seasoning and stuff.

Beef was a bit disappointing, would have liked it pinker, or redder, or mooing.
