Title: Is anyone still watching LOST?

If so, is he dead?

Course not that would be too easy!  Sure Ben said in a previous episode, that the past couldn't be changed to someone.

No chance. Locke has been brought back to life by the island, I'm sure he will too.

I reckon Sayid has somehow started the chain of events that will lead to Ben become head Other.

i'd be quite keen to find out what happens at the end of all of this, if it ever happens - i certainly can't be arsed to watch it any more though, so if someone could post the conclusion, if it ever comes, that would be great.  cheers

Lost potentially could have been a momentous piece of tv, but the annoying cunts who wrote it obviously gained more pleasure in spending every other episode or so, doing nothing. They could have easily wrapped up all the series that have gone before in 2 seasons.

I'm on the verge of not watching it out of principle (I actually stopped a few episodes ago, then got bored and caught up online). I genuinely think they're mocking me by drawing everything out soooooooo much.

Really? I thought this series has been superb with plot progressions coming at a fast pace, brother.

The last 2 series I'll agree with you.

The only reason you'd say that is if you'd already downloaded and watched this weeks episode.

Interesting.

For what it is worth I don't think he will die either.

So do you think we'll ever find out what the significance of those darn numbers is?

I haven't, I'm watching at Sky One/HD pace.

I try to avoid spoilers. It was opinion based on other peoples observations of last weeks episode.

Also, do you think Walt will ever return to the island?

He was in an episode recently so clearly they have not forgotten about him entirely.

His part in all of this is still to be revealed I feel.

Bump.

Just over an hour until S5E11.

I am hearing that this is one of the better offerings this season, which to me means a lot.

I wonder what previous "unanswereds" will be revealed tonight.

Nothing can change or happen differently in the past as it has already happened (we, along with the characters, are just seeing things in a different order) - this has been made very clear time and time again in this seasons episodes. So in the case of child Ben, either he can't die (as adult Ben is alive in the future) or if he does die then adult Ben we've seen in the future is a different person. The writers would have to do a lot of back tracking to change this fact and I can't see them doing it.

They have explained the numbers a bit more in the wider Lost universe but the writers have also said we're unlikely to ever get a full explanation (as it isn't central to the story and would demystify it), more here: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Numbers.

I'm still watching, but at the moment other than explaining the few remaining unanswered questions, I don't really see where the plot is going. Although there's only 2 episodes left in this series so I' guessing a new big question will be thrown up some time soon.

I am starting to wonder now how this whole shebang is going to end.

My guess is that two characters, most probably Jack and Kate go off to die in the cave, and become those skeletons that were in Season 1.

:)

They even made reference to the statue that I made reference to up there.

Really good.

Another theory I have for the very end is that Desmond, who somehow seems immune to this whole 'course correction' thing, will somehow stop Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 from ever taking off.

Good point, I had totally forgotten about her.

Did you see it last night newmarket red?

Lots of very interesting little 'reveals'.

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?
Post by: Batch on Monday, April 13, 2009, 17:16:03
Since smoky manifested as Alex, could it also be resurrected Locke? Hence why he couldn't be summoned by Ben - already there as Locke.

Then he (smoky lock) led Ben to Smoky's hidey hole for all that charade to play out so that Ben would unquestionably follow Locke.
---
So did Ben do in Penny/Desmond Jr then, or did Desmond fight him off. Hard to tell.

I think Desmond is still a major player, so he must remain alive.

I have no idea what it meant, but that "shadow of the statue" line was the bit that excited me most.

There are two things that I look forward to the most in LOST:

1) An episode with Richard Alpert in
2) Any kind of reference to that big statue thing

I also enjoyed see all the Egyptian scripture on the walls of the temple where that smoke monster thing came out of.

What's happened to Dan Faraday?

Didn't he go mental after whatsherface died? Although they haven't shown him I'm sure they mentioned him being not all there when kate et al arrived back at the DI camp.

Why doesn't Alpert age? Ben and Jim from Neighbours did.

I think they made some comment that he was there for a while and then he left the island, possibly with the suggestion he'd lost the plot. Though I'm wondering where the last version of him that we saw (show time wise) fits in to the scheme of things, ie have we already seen that version of him in a previous episode? He had stuff written in his notebook that he didn't understand fully until things happened, so I'm guessing a future version of him must have given it to an older version of him at some point.

Or to put it more simply I wonder if he has jumped around time like The Doctor, so fucking up his time line.

From what i remember it was just "miles?! long time, no see" not asking if it was miles. Im probably wrong though, was a good episode compared to last weeks shocker.

I reckon the biggest question now is who the "shadow of the statue" people are. They are obviously nothing to do with Widmore and I've got a hunch they're nothing to do with The Others either, so they could be a 3rd party we've never seen before. Ben and Widmore both appear to be behind Locke now, which would mean all the other flight survivors and The Others will be on Team Locke as well - again supporting another party being involved.

I think that they are the Dharma Initiative.

The guy in the van in 2004 who tried to talk Miles out of joining Widmore's team, was also back on the island after flight 316 crashed, wasn't he?

Probably,i recognised him from somewhere. i am getting a little confused now though, all the inbreading that seems to be going on, no matter how good it is i want it too end. they should stop throwing new characters and storylines at us.

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?

But they didn't say "who" was under the shadow of the statue, I'm sure they said "what". Therefore I think it's a "thing" rather than a group of people.

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?

I meant that the group actually posing the question may be the Dharma Initiative, and they want their god damned island back.

Only a handful of episodes left now, and still no sign of the enigmatic Jacob...

Yep, he's back on the island as well.

No one really knows what has happened to the Dharma Initiative, though in one of the online stories there was a new Dharma Initiative formed in 2008 which was then shut down due to the 2008 financial crisis. There is the suggestions of a link between Dharma and Widmore Corporation and between Ajira and Dharma, but then there is a lot of links like that all over the place.

It was never Dharma's island in the first place though, The Others were there first.

So what the fuck is happening?

Eloise sent her son to the island knowing he'd die, so it must all be part of the "past", right? But we've seen Dan alive in the "future".

I'm seriously confused.

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?
Post by: jonny72 on Sunday, May 3, 2009, 21:43:21
Eloise knew in the present that when she let Daniel go to the island (on the freighter) that it would end with her shooting him dead in the late 1970's. For her it had already happened (in her past) but it was the present day Daniel that she shot (he was in "the past" when it happened, but it was "his present" not "his past").

I might of just confused you more.

But at least they answered a good few questions. Confirming Eloise as Daniel's mum, Charles Widmore as Daniel's dad and the person who faked the Oceanic 815 wreckage, what the catastrophic Dharma event was and that the hatch (the Swan?) did serve a real purpose and wasn't some psychological test. Probably some other stuff as well.

I get the impression all the time travel shit will be finished with come the end of the season.

Not really, as Daniel reckoned he could stop the need for the button being pressed.

I really can't see them going down that route as they'd be getting in to time paradox territory which would confuse the fuck out of everybody, far more than they have so far. Unless they're planning a reset of some sort which they might just get away with and could be how they're planning to get them back to the present day.

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?

One thing I do know about Richard Alpert is that he has been doing his job for a very long time.

I believe that the season 5 finale is being aired in the states TONIGHT, so I am going to have to stay off the internet until after Sunday now, just in case I stumble across some kind of spoiler.

He definitely exists in 2004, but that's not to say he doesn't exist in the past and someone then takes on the 'role' of Jacob.

I'm probably gonna stream the last two episodes tomorrow at some point, really enjoying it lately.

Can't imagine Jack's plan will go ahead, they've said series 6 will be the last series and I can't really see what they could do if the atomic bomb master reset button was set in motion.

I think Locke will end up being able to send people back to prior to the crash as they choose or something like that come the end of season 6 and he'll drive Ben completely insane with his higher understanding of the island.

Looking back, it will take some effort watching it from the start. You'll get to a point (a number of times) when you ask yourself "why the fuck am I watching this?", especially when nothing much happened for the best part of an entire series and then loads of shit goes off and its difficult to keep up with it and understand it.

Having said that, I reckon it is worth the effort now that things are starting to fall in to place. It might be a bit sad but I'm planning to watch season 1 through 5 again prior to season 6 starting, to make sure I didn't miss anything and as it makes more sense knowing what happens next - if that makes sense. Will most likely get them all on blu-ray to watch them in hd.

But I think you should edit your post as one of the things you mention is from early in the episode, which in turn will enable people to figure out what the other thing you refer to is. Which might spoil it a bit.

I've been trying to get my head round who is good / bad and who is on which side, with the net result that my head is about to explode. Definitely going to watch the entire series again from the beginning before the next series starts, knowing what we know now should make more sense of it all. Possibly.

Plus the first three series are out on blu-ray next month, excellent excuse for me to buy a blu-ray player and surround sound speaker system.

Oh deffo Juliette, to the max.

Interestingly, in real life she is 9 years Kate's senior.

Excellent finale though. So Locke was actually the geezer from the start, sat on the beach with Jacob.

Looks that way. And the Oceanic lot were just the pawns in his game. It all seems to have gone a bit Dallas to just throw this in there at the last minute to explain everything away.

Locke really is dead, but the island version of Locke is the same entity that is the island version of Christian, and probably that smoke monster thing too... the bloke from the start who I thought was James Nesbitt (until he spoke in an American accent).

That's what I reckon anyway.

Gosh this is all very enlightening.

Locke is dead. Bloke at beginning with Jacob has been pretending to be Locke re-incarnated.

Other than that I don't think we know that much more. Jacob may or may not be dead. Same applies to Locke, Juliette, Jack and all the others Dharma Losties. In fact everyone who is dead may now be alive if they do a reset to the beginning and have Oceanic 815 land in LAX. We do know that they are coming, though we don't know who is doing the coming yet or if we've even seen who is going to come. Talking of which....

Juliette vs Kate. How can anyone want to jump Juliette - she is an old porker. Sawyer only did it as there were slim pickings elsewhere at Dharma. So its Kate everytime for me (looks like Sawyer will be hitting it as well now its back on the table). I bet she takes it up the arse as well, she looks well dirty.

I think they should've just ended it now. More certainty put on what would happen if the H-bomb exploded (alteration of history so the plane never crashed all them years ago when lost began). so viewers could be sure what happened without wasting people's time creating another series, which i believe will just be 4/5 episodes, just like the ending of prison break.

Juliette's not dead.

Locke has an evil twin brother.

The never ageing Richard Alpert is god.

Prison Break is just on a mid-season break before the final 6 episodes are shown, mid-season breaks like that are common in the US. Though there is going to be a couple of extra episodes to wrap everything up.

The final season of Lost will have 17 or so episodes and that will be it (though there could be a mid-season break) the producers have been saying that for the best part of two years now. I guess they could do some extra specials or a spin off but it looks unlikely at the moment - the producers have said they have no plans to answer all the questions or tidy up all the loose ends. Which makes a lot of sense, why take away all of the mystery?

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?

Pretty obvious Locke was in the box, had suspicions the alive version wasn't him before this episode but as soon as the box appeared then it was obvious.

Not sure the bomb is going to be the saviour of the Oceanic survivors. When Jacob said "they're coming" I thought he was talking about them, not the group with Capn' Frank. I wonder if the flash was the Island transporting them forward in time to protect itself, i.e. prevent Juliet from triggering the bomb.

Who really are the group from Ajira Airways Flight 316.

They've started releasing official trailers and teasers for last season of Lost.

They seem to be giving the impression there will be a major reset, from videos shown at Comic Con;
- Kate is wanted for the murder of her step fathers apprentice, rather than her step father.
- Oceanic was launched in 1979 and has gone 30 years without any crashes, suggesting Oceanic 815 never crashed.
- Hurley has been running his chicken fast food chain since winning the lottery.

Sure there is a lot more to it than that though, if they did a complete reset the shit would hit the fan big style.

i lost interest in this with about 8 episodes to go in series 5.

i had them all on sky plus just in case and I watched them all yesterday. i think I called alot of it months back. certainly miles being the dr's father and whidmore being daniels father.

the cliff hangers seemed very much like an ending (a reset back to the start) so not sure where they are going to go from here...

The final season should be good, I've read a good few spoilers and it should be interesting.

I went through the first 5 seasons on DVD to remind myself of stuff, you also get to see things in a different perspective as you know what's going to happen. Watching all the extra's and listening to the commentaries is well worth it as they answer a few questions, especially the ones with the main producers / directors (whatever their names are).

After deciding to stop watching it. I caught up on the end of the last series and wil watch this last series, but probably after it's finished so i don't have to put up with endless episodes full of nothing.

I wish they'd made lost about 3 series shorter, and much quicker, because they easily could have and it woulda been far more gripping. Wasn't it originally going to be 8 series, but the makers realised they were milking it far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far too much?

The whole draw out way that it is, makes me feel like the makers are laughing at the viewers for being mugs and watching it for so long. :)

It was the 3rd or 4th season that pissed everyone off, as it went nowhere for a long time. Then ABC said it will run to 6 seasons and everything started moving again as the writers could start moving towards the finish. The show runners have admitted it went off the boil and that being given an end date was the best thing that could happen.

Watching it again, the 5th season was pretty good as things started falling in to place as they linked things up.

Kind of funny that it has been such a big hit, when the ABC executives at the time the pilot was made were fired in part due to the high costs of the pilot ($6m or something like that) when they hadn't committed to it.

Wasn't it originally going to be 8 series, but the makers realised they were milking it far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far too much?

I think it was originally supposed to be about 4 series but then it was so successfull the network want to milk it and get 8 series in (which would explain why 3 and 4 were such filler series) then when they all realised they were milking it too much then decided to cut it back down to what the writers felt they needed to finish the show. They decided on another 2.

...I could have made that all up mind.

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?
Post by: jonny72 on Monday, February 1, 2010, 22:36:42
I don't recall ever hearing that there was a set number of seasons to begin with. They just rolled with it, then in the 3rd season people got pissed off when it went nowhere, they realised they needed to set the end date so they did.

When they made the 2 hour pilot (which cost over $10m) it hadn't been commissioned, ABC wanted them to provide an ending so it could be shown as a one off if necessary but the producers said they couldn't / wouldn't. But the producers have always said that they've had the story mapped out in a "bible" since day one, so they always knew where they were going with it. Though they started to drag things out in season 3 partly as they didn't have an end date so it was impossible to plan how far to move things forward.

I really need to get a life, I spend far too much time on Lost at the moment and have done for a while. Fuck knows how I'm going to cope when it finished - best TV show ever!

And Locke isn't Smokey. Locke is dead. Its "fake-Locke" that is Smokey.

There are official streams if you're in the USA (or can fake it), which isn't much help. Not aware of any elsewhere but then I don't look as I always use torrents. How about getting a mate with Sky to record it?

In the past I've always found it on megavideo or some japanese site but last night was an all round mare...all the video sites now want to you fill in a survey to provce you are human and it's a ball-ache. I guess I can always torrent if I have to.

The alternate time line in season 6 was purgatory, they all went there when they died - Jack died in the final episode whilst Ben and Hurley lived for some time afterwards for example. I was fine with all that, but they left so many unanswered questions about the island that it spoilt it and made the whole thing feel like a massive waste of time. They didn't have to explain everything but they should have done a whole lot more than they did.

As DMR said, what was the point of bigging up Des when all he did was nearly destroy the island? Incredibly they even raised some new questions - if the island was so important why did Jacob want Des there as a fail safe to destroy it if necessary and why wasn't Jack affected by the massive magnetic field in the light that shook even Des?

watched the final last night and still finished with so many unanswered questions and thought the ending was very weak. not what i was expecting at all. Guessed they were dead a long time ago but when did they decide to create that scenario to find each other again?? wtf

and did kate etc make it off the island or were they already dead? if so when did they die

quite dissapointed tbh

They all died in the plane crash in episode 1.

The way I read it was that the Island was deaths waiting room, but before they could pass over to heaven, hell or wherever you go, their spirits had to meet up again in purgatory, which was the alternative reality that they all created and has been regularly shown in season 6.

So basically, everything that has happened on that Island didn't happen in reality, it happened in their own little world.

Pointless for 6 years of TV I know, but I enjoyed it.

There are many unanswered questions though.

No, they didn't die in the plane crash. The island was all real which is why it's so fucking annoying that they didn't explain what exactly the island is. The flash sideways shown in S6 was the 'purgatory'.

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?
Post by: jonny72 on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, 14:08:21
Everything that happened was real except for the flash sideways in season 6 which was purgatory, where they all met up after they had died which for some of them (Ben and Hurley for example) was many years later - though they all looked the same as they did in the months following the plane crash.

I didn't fully get it when I watched it the first time, but it makes sense if you think about it or watch it again - the scene in the church with Jack and Christian is where they start to explain it with Jack acknowledging he died on the island. Though there were some hints before that if you knew what to look for.

I'm pissed they didn't explain who was doing the food parcel drops and more about the Dharma background.

Though they have left things open enough for a follow up show or two, a whole season might be a bit much.

Open to interpretation I guess.  The island is the cork in the bottle neck to hell as explained earlier by Jacob and his bottle of wine.  The white light is the force that stops people going to hell as this was extinguished when the cork was removed.

The characters were trapped on the island until their spirits understood what had happened and found each other.  Jack did not understand what had happened until he saw his father.  He didn't die on the island until after that, therefore, it didn't matter when they actually died on the island as they were already dead, in the plane crash in episode one, it was all a case of them understanding what went on, (like sixth sense)

The reason his dad appeared on the island in spirit from time to time is because he was already dead when the plane crashed, and already understood what was going on, he was there to try to get Jack to understand what had happened.

Therefore my opinion is that the island was not real, it was what they created in their sub conscious.  When they wanted drugs, a plane crashed with drugs, when they wanted food, an air drop left food, when they wanted to get off the island, loads of different ways of getting off the island appeared.

I can't see how everything is real when there were Polar bears and smoke monsters running around.  Also the island moved?  Not something you often see on Sky News.

It just shows how many variations there are as to what people believe it meant though which makes it a good ending IMO.

But then Juliet died died at the end of season 5 and didn't re-appear on the island.

Where as the others did, so don't think they died then.

I kind of understood it the same way Sam did.

The island was real and flash sideways were purgatory after they had all died.

Of course it left some ends open. How/when did Hurley and Ben die? Did Lapidas, Kate, Sawyer, Miles and Richard leave the island safely or die trying?

Why were people like Alex, Russo, Charlotte, Faraday and Miles used in the flashforwards but weren't in the church, even though the Juliet and Ben were?

Then of course there are the Walt and Michael who didn't appear although I guess that's an 'actors available' reason.

I hoped for as a minimum they'd answer what the island was and why (after Locke/Smoke Monsters) death did it still need protecting?

If Richard got off the island does he begin to age?

How comes Jack could suddenly hurt Locke?

Why did Jacob stop people leaving the island and why did he make sure women couldn't give birth? How differently did Hurley do things?

I certainly didn't expect answers to everything but I felt they didn't answer the most important ones.

I always thought it would finish with Jack doing something to stop all of it ever happening and he'd just wake up on the plane in LAX and they'd all carry on their original lives

....and last of all - when Jack moves onto heave with the others why the hell doesn't he think where the fucks my son? But I guess he wasn't real in real life just in fake life I think...

If Richard got off the island does he begin to age?

I thought they answered that one when he got his first grey hair. I assumed that to mean he was now ageing as Jacob was  gone for good after handing over the island to Jack. Following on from that I thought they suggested pretty strongly that whoever was in charge of the island also got to make the rules, which would explain a few other things such as Jack and Locke hurting each other (it was Jacob's rule that they couldn't whereas Jack wanted the opposite).

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?

I remember the richard thing.

The Jack changing the rules thing makes sense but Jack took over from Jacob and Kate still couldn't shoot Locke at first, unless that was Jacks surprise changing the rule after that point to give Locke a false sense of security

Either that or it was more to do with Desmond moving that thing and the Island starting to crumble

...and why did Jacob allow the Dharma people to come along set up camp and do all those experiments?

I suppose he left them to it incase the killed him, or got off the island and go pubic on the island.

Of course the whole point was everyone was there for a reason so maybe Jacob knew he needed Dharma to build the hatch to get Desmond to not push the button to make the plane crash

...but the eloise found windows which was nothing to do with the button. Although the hatch and button were gone at this point.

I don't even know why I'm typing this anymore. It can't be answered.

Maybe. But the other thing supporting the rules thing was the rules that Jacob's mother set when she was in charge. Though something had changed as MiB could kill Jack as well, which he couldn't do when Jacob was in charge.

I read a really good explanation of the main points, supposedly written by someone at Bad Robot (the production company). They reckoned Jacob wanted (and needed) to kill MiB but he couldn't do it himself, so he kept bring more people to the island to do it for him including the Dharma Initiative. But he kept them all at arms length and let them get on with it which resulted in MiB corrupting everyone and killing them one way or the other, so eventually he got more involved in it.

They explained the church pretty well, especially why some people were there and some not. For example, Ben didn't go in as the people he needed to find peace with weren't all there and he needed to do that before he could move on.

Just watched it.

I like Berniman's explanation best, because until I read it I interpreted the ending the same as Jonny72.

The problem with the island being real theory is that they didn't answer anything about why it was there, etc etc..

The purgatory end for the characters was OK, but another show already did that one better this week. Won't mention it just in case somebody hasn't watched it!

If you're going with Berni's theory, if they're all dead on the island and the island is purgatory, where the hell are they in the flash sideways world which they pass on from at the end?

That theory doesn't make sense at all to me.

Title: Re: Is anyone still watching LOST?

To be fair, the ending itself was near perfect - the way they tied up the flash sideways and explained what was going on, especially the final scenes. But they fucked it up and detracted from the ending by not explaining enough about the island itself and the things that happened on the island. I'm not saying they should have explained everything but they should have cleared up a lot more stuff than they did.

They had plenty of time to do so in the final season but instead they wasted a lot of it. The "Across The Sea" episode being a good example, it could have been used to explain more about the island and the relationship between Jacob and MiB but instead they just padded out 10 minutes with 30 minutes of crap. Worst episode I can remember.

I have to say the explanation in that link is pretty substantial and makes a lot of sense, but the same way that people are finding holes in my theory there are plenty of holes and assumptions in that.

Ultimately the programme has left a lot of the why's and wherefores up to to the individuals which is why there are no rights or wrongs in people understanding it either way.

If they would have answered all questions then this debate would not be going on.

It is impossible to be sure what everything meant when you are talking about a fictional storyline that includes smoke monsters etc, a lot of the theories going around are based around what individual peoples believes are.

The alternate timeline wasn't an alternate timeline at all. Just as Christian said they created that place
(The church ETC.) so they could find each other and all move on together. He said some died before Jack,
and some long after (I.e. Ben & Hurley) Outside the church Hurley tells ben he made a great number 2 and Ben replies
"You made a great number 1. "So we can assume they lived out thier lives on the island after Jack died".

As for the plane of pasengers i.e claire, sawyer and co. again they could've survived long after jack dies.

Sounds like it was six series of nothing happening, culminating in an ending which didn't explain anything?

Well those that are saying it was crap and that they didn't waste "6 years" of their lives have missed out IMO.

There were poor periods and episodes but on the whole I think it has been one of the best things on TV over the past 6 years, along with 24 (which is rightly coming to an end now too.) and life on mars/ashes to ashes and the wire.

It's easy to give an uninformed opinion based on something you didn't watch or what others are saying.  Programmes like Lost, Fringe and Flashback at least try to do something different and something that gets you thinking rather than just another cop show, medical show or run of the mill day to day crap that you are not likely to remember in 10 years time.

Lost will be remembered for many years whether you think it was crap or not.

taken from some guy at BadRobots

Quote
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First ...
The Island:

It was real. Everything that happened on the island that we saw throughout the 6 seasons was real. Forget the final image of the plane crash, it was put in purposely to f*&k with people's heads and show how far the show had come. They really crashed. They really survived. They really discovered Dharma and the Others. The Island keeps the balance of good and evil in the world. It always has and always will perform that role. And the Island will always need a "Protector". Jacob wasn't the first, Hurley won't be the last. However, Jacob had to deal with a malevolent force (MIB) that his mother, nor Hurley had to deal with. He created the devil and had to find a way to kill him -- even though the rules prevented him from actually doing so.

Thus began Jacob's plan to bring candidates to the Island to do the one thing he couldn't do. Kill the MIB. He had a huge list of candidates that spanned generations. Yet everytime he brought people there, the MIB corrupted them and caused them to kill one another. That was until Richard came along and helped Jacob understand that if he didn't take a more active role, then his plan would never work.

Enter Dharma -- which I'm not sure why John is having such a hard time grasping. Dharma, like the countless scores of people that were brought to the island before, were brought there by Jacob as part of his plan to kill the MIB. However, the MIB was aware of this plan and interferred by "corrupting" Ben. Making Ben believe he was doing the work of Jacob when in reality he was doing the work of the MIB. This carried over into all of Ben's "off-island" activities. He was the leader. He spoke for Jacob as far as they were concerned. So the "Others" killed Dharma and later were actively trying to kill Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley and all the candidates because that's what the MIB wanted. And what he couldn't do for himself.

Dharma was originally brought in to be good. But was turned bad by MIB's corruption and eventually destroyed by his pawn Ben. Now, was Dharma only brought there to help Jack and the other Canditates on their overall quest to kill Smokey? Or did Jacob have another list of Canidates from the Dharma group that we were never aware of? That's a question that is purposley not answered because whatever answer the writers came up with would be worse than the one you come up with for yourself. Still ... Dharma's purpose is not "pointless" or even vague. Hell, it's pretty blantent.

Still, despite his grand plan, Jacob wanted to give his "candidates" (our Lostaways) the one thing he, nor his brother, were ever afforded: free will. Hence him bringing a host of "candidates" through the decades and letting them "choose" which one would actually do the job in the end. Maybe he knew Jack would be the one to kill Flocke and that Hurley would be the protector in the end. Maybe he didn't. But that was always the key question of the show: Fate vs Free-will. Science vs Faith. Personally I think Jacob knew from the beginning what was going to happen and that everyone played a part over 6 seasons in helping Jack get to the point where he needed to be to kill Smokey and make Hurley the protector -- I know that's how a lot of the writers viewed it. But again, they won't answer that (nor should they) because that ruins the fun.

In the end, Jack got to do what he always wanted to do from the very first episode of the show: Save his fellow Lostaways. He got Kate and Sawyer off the island and he gave Hurley the purpose in life he'd always been missing. And, in Sideways world (which we'll get to next) he in fact saved everyone by helping them all move on ...

Now...

Sideways World:

Sideways world is where it gets really cool in terms of theology and metaphysical discussion (for me at least -- because I love history/religion theories and loved all the talks in the writer's room about it). Basically what the show is proposing is that we're all linked to certain people during our lives. Call them soulmates (though it's not exactly the best word). But these people we're linked to are with us duing "the most important moments of our lives" as Christian said. These are the people we move through the universe with from lifetime to lifetime. It's loosely based in Hinduisim with large doses of western religion thrown into the mix.

The conceit that the writers created, basing it off these religious philosophies, was that as a group, the Lostaways subconsciously created this "sideways" world where they exist in purgatory until they are "awakened" and find one another. Once they all find one another, they can then move on and move forward. In essence, this is the show's concept of the afterlife. According to the show, everyone creates their own "Sideways" purgatory with their "soulmates" throughout their lives and exist there until they all move on together. That's a beautiful notion. Even if you aren't religious or even spirtual, the idea that we live AND die together is deeply profound and moving.

It's a really cool and spirtual concept that fits the whole tone and subtext the show has had from the beginning. These people were SUPPOSED to be together on that plane. They were supposed to live through these events -- not JUST because of Jacob. But because that's what the universe or God (depending on how religious you wish to get) wanted to happen. The show was always about science vs faith -- and it ultimately came down on the side of faith. It answered THE core question of the series. The one question that has been at the root of every island mystery, every character backstory, every plot twist. That, by itself, is quite an accomplishment.

How much you want to extrapolate from that is up to you as the viewer. Think about season 1 when we first found the Hatch. Everyone thought that's THE answer! Whatever is down there is the answer! Then, as we discovered it was just one station of many. One link in a very long chain that kept revealing more, and more of a larger mosiac.

But the writer's took it even further this season by contrasting this Sideways "purgatory" with the Island itself. Remember when Michael appeared to Hurley, he said he was not allowed to leave the Island. Just like the MIB. He wasn't allowed into this sideways world and thus, was not afforded the opportunity to move on. Why? Because he had proven himself to be unworthy with his actions on the Island. He failed the test. The others, passed. They made it into Sideways world when they died -- some before Jack, some years later. In Hurley's case, maybe centuries later. They exist in this sideways world until they are "awakened" and they can only move on TOGETHER because they are linked. They are destined to be together for eternity. That was their destiny.

They were NOT linked to Anna Lucia, Daniel, Roussou, Alex, Miles, Lupidis, (and all the rest who weren't in the chuch -- basically everyone who wasn't in season 1). Yet those people exist in Sideways world. Why? Well again, here's where they leave it up to you to decide. The way I like to think about it, is that those people who were left behind in Sideways world have to find their own soulmates before they can wake up. It's possible that those links aren't people from the island but from their other life (Anna's parnter, the guy she shot --- Roussou's husband, etc etc).

A lot of people have been talking about Ben and why he didn't go into the Church. And if you think of Sideways world in this way, then it gives you the answer to that very question. Ben can't move on yet because he hasn't connected with the people he needs to. It's going to be his job to awaken Roussou, Alex, Anna Lucia (maybe), Ethan, Goodspeed, his father and the rest. He has to attone for his sins more than he did by being Hurley's number two. He has to do what Hurley and Desmond did for our Lostaways with his own people. He has to help them connect. And he can only move on when all the links in his chain are ready to. Same can be said for Faraday, Charlotte, Whidmore, Hawkins etc. It's really a neat, and cool concept. At least to me.

But, from a more "behind the scenes" note: the reason Ben's not in the church, and the reason no one is in the church but for Season 1 people is because they wrote the ending to the show after writing the pilot. And never changed it. The writers always said (and many didn't believe them) that they knew their ending from the very first episode. I applaud them for that. It's pretty fantastic. Originally Ben was supposed to have a 3 episode arc and be done. But he became a big part of the show. They could have easily changed their ending and put him in the church -- but instead they problem solved it. Gave him a BRILLIANT moment with Locke outside the church ... and then that was it. I loved that. For those that wonder -- the original ending started the moment Jack walked into the church and touches the casket to Jack closing his eyes as the other plane flies away. That was always JJ's ending. And they kept it.

In the end, for me, LOST was a touchstone show that dealt with faith, the afterlife, and all these big, spirtual questions that most shows don't touch. And to me, they never once waivered from their core story -- even with all the sci-fi elements they mixed in. To walk that long and daunting of a creative tightrope and survive is simply astounding.

i still dont get it?
if they all died, then why do they go to the afterlife with each other?
why do relationships formed on the island go before everything else in their previous lives?
why didn't sayed go off with his bird who died before the flight?

because they chose to

the old free will v fate theme that ran throughout

so basically it didn't make any sense!!

it's like talking to a religious nutter:

"why does god allow famine?"

"it's a question of free will vs fate"

"...Thanks."

We get it, you thought it was crap even though you didn't watch it!

There's a thread about the wire somewhere, use the search!
