Title: England's finest: Nicky Summerbee
Post by: juddie on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, 13:42:11
this from a charity football programme yesterday:

Nicky Summerbee - Summerbee made 112 appearances at swindon and scored six goals before manchester city paid £1.3m for his services in 1994. Nicky played over 130 games for city before switching to sunderland where he enjoyed the pinnacle of his career, sumberbee made his sunderland debut against portsmouth in 1997 which he capped by notching the final goal in a 4-1 career after sunderland won promotion to the premiership in 1999, and become an exceptionally under-valued player. Statistics showed him to be a better cosser of the ball than David Beckham, with a crossing accuracy of 36% to Beckham's 27. As well as crossing, his shooting abilities outshone those of Beckham's, by 53% to 48.

Problem for Nicky though was the shot just went dead straight...so usually into the wall. Being able to curve it will slow the ball down...

And he had better haircuts than David Beckham.

And probably a better wife as well.

He could pass a ball but not a bar. Pisshead extraordinaire with rumours of worse - allegedly. He was a great player for us beer or no beer. There were some seriuos rumours as to what he got up to New Years Eve when we had Chelsea the next day in the Prem. Wasn't he the driver of the car Kinkladze was chasing when Kinkladze wrapped his?

Favourite memory of him was the wicked cross he put in early on in the playoff semi first leg against Tranmere in 93, which Vickers duly headed in.  Never had to beat his full back, could always just cross it around him.
