Title: Favourite Songs Post by: Nemo on Monday, March 23, 2009, 21:14:24 A blantant rip-off/loving spin-off of the Best Bands thread. It'll be interesting to see how much these differ from the best bands- I know a couple of mine won't come from my favourite five bands and it would be interesting to see how much everybody else deviates.
1. The Masses against the Classes- Manic Street Preachers I'm not even that much of a leftie, but I will always treble the sound on whatever I'm listening to if this comes on. I've not seen the Manics live, but I imagine this song would be fairly phonemonal. In a similar vein if the Jam's Eton Rifles, so I'll leave that one of the list. 2. Acquiesce- Oasis I don't to get snobby and rave about B-Sides, but this was, I think, the B-side for the single release of "Some Might Say" which is perfectly good but frankly the tape should have been the other way round. 3. Runaway- Bon Jovi Possibly the only upside of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, which is otherwise horrendous. 4. Time- Pink Floyd A bit of a change in pace from the rest. Pink Floyd are a band that a lot of people tend to like at completely different stages of their career and hate at others. I personally think this is one of their best songs and it comes complete with being the first song I can remember hearing as a child. (My Dad took some sort of sick pleasure in frightening the life out of me by playing the Clocks chiming at earbursting volumes. Actually, it's a wonder I like the song based on that.) 5. Common People- Pulp Everyone loves this song. Seriously, everyone. If it comes on in a shop, club or wherever, look around and 90% if not more of people will be mouthing the lyrics to themselves, and they all know most of the words even if they don't know who sings it. 1. The Stranglers - No More Heroes Whats not to like? One of the best opening to a song ever. Aggression, melody and a memorable tune. It will be played at my funeral if I have my way! I would normally go for Hugh Cornwell's solo version of Down In The Sewer, but feel that no one would want to listen to 10 mins of aural masterbation at my funeral. 2. HMHB - All I Want For Xmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit How one song can sum up childhood feelings is amazing. Can still relate to this song! 3. The The - This Is The Day Hope and despair mixed together with a beautiful tune. Could have chosen anything off of Soul Mining to go on this list. 4. Elvis Costello - New Amsterdam Was going to go for Pump It Up, but recalled the fact that this was the favourite song of a dear old friend who recently passed away. There is a tear in my eye as I think about John as I type. 5. New Musik - Living By Numbers They don't want your name, just your number! A cheesy pop tune that sticks in your head. 6. Siouxsie & The Banshees - Spellbound Following the footsteps of a rog doll dance, you are entranced - Spellbound. Sums up the pattern of my life. 7. Army Of Lovers - Obsession Its simple, fun, crap Europop. Hilarious video. Something that doesn't take itself too seriously. 8. The Undertones - Teenage Kicks Second best start to a song ever! Possibly 'the' best punk song ever! 9. The Police - Roxanne If only they could have continued in this vein. 10. Ultravox - Thin Wall Could have chosen Sleep Walk, Passing Strangers or much off the Vienna album, but prefer to go for the the pinacle of their career. Many people prefer them with John Foxx, but I prefer the early Midge Ure years, before he decided that he wanted to feed the world! Title: Re: Favourite Songs Post by: Crozzer on Monday, March 23, 2009, 22:10:53 1. "Sultans of Swing", Dire Straits 2. "Hold on Tight", ELO 3. "Only the Lonely", Roy Orbison 4. "Mr. Rock and Roll", Amy Macdonald 5. Elinor Rigby, Beatles Title: Re: Favourite Songs Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, March 23, 2009, 22:22:22 Kings of Leon - Taper Jean Girl
Catchy and always gets me tapping my feet. Stereophonics - I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio I just love this song. Paul Weller - Sunflower Possible my favourite guitar riff. Classic Weller. Incubus - Wish You Were Here Just great memories for me. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Pretty Little Ditty No lyrics, just instrumental. Frusciante at his best. Nirvana - Drain You Always make me turn it up very, very loud. Feeder - Just The Way I'm Feeling I just like it. Queens of the Stone Age - No One Know's It's a classic. What's not to like about it? Oasis - Acquiesce Stolen from Nemo, but another track that I love when played very very very loud. Burning Sky - The Jam (The version on 'Setting Sons' is good, but I prefer the accoustic version on 'Extras.')
2. Bed And Breakfast Man - Madness. 3. Sloop John B - Beach Boys. 4. Saturn 5 - Inspiral Carpets (More for the intro than the actual song) 5. Hey Jude - The Beatles. Ask me next week and it would probably be different, although 'Burning Sky' would always be there.
