Title: Totally agree with this bloke
Post by: STFC_Gazza on Sunday, March 22, 2009, 08:36:14
Postmaster was forced out because if you dont speak english he wouldnt serve you. Totally agree with the Postmaster

"If these people are coming into our country they should practice our language and culture.

"As far as I am concerned, if you can't be British you should go home.

"This is our country, let's work together to save it because the Government doesn't have the backbone to solve the problem."

So do you agree with the postmaster or the fact he was forced out Gaz?

Hes right in saying that they should learn the language imo.
And hes right about the government too imo.

Quote
A postmaster who refused to serve customers who could not understand English said he was "forced out" of his post office after a backlash in the community.

Sri-Lankan-born Deva Kumarasiri said he turned away five people from his Nottingham post office for "wasting time and holding up the queue" by not speaking English.

The 40-year-old father of two, from Carlton, Nottingham, said most people had come out in support of his stance, but a "small minority" launched a petition against him.

"I was forced out by a small minority of people who don't want to integrate into society," Mr Kumarasiri said.

"I was threatened and Muslim leaders in the community started a petition to get me out, so today I moved at my own request.

"The manager didn't like my policy either and said I lost him a lot of trade, but I only banned five people.

Mr Kumarasiri said he not impose a complete ban but told people to learn some English or come back with an interpreter.

"It is just common sense," he said. "If these people are coming into our country they should practice our language and culture.

"As far as I am concerned, if you can't be British you should go home.

"This is our country, let's work together to save it because the Government doesn't have the backbone to solve the problem."

From now on he will be based at a different post office in Nottingham, but hopes to move back to his former Sneinton Boulevard branch in the future.

A Post Office spokesman said: "We are continuing to monitor the situation."

Gazza...you can't not serve someone just because they can't speak English.

Let's face it, there's plenty who work for Royal Mail, who can't either.

I could understand, developing some kind of procedure, if there is a problem of slowing up service.

In general he is spot on. If we go to say afghanistan and wore jeans and tshirt we would be shot for offending "their god".

People should make an effort to learn the language.

Maybe he should have done something positive to try and help these people to get over the language barrier and practice out culture if he was so worked up about it.

There was a time when if you wanted something you put in the effort yourself to get it. You didn't wait for or expect others to come forward and help you. Sadly those days seem to have gone.

Fair enough if you agree with it....but to me the fella sounds like a racist.

Is it actually possible to get fired from the post office?

"Holding up the queue", do you think he would have gone on to ban half deaf little old ladies? They do my fucking head in.

I agree about the learning the language.

As for him to say if you cant be british you should go home, that seems to me to be a bit on the racist side, and a bit rich considering hes Sri Lankan isnt he?

I'd ban middle class women with young kids in tow...who stand in the queue, wittering to each other about their fucking holidays, how little Samantha is doing so well in her ballet classes, and don't even notice it's their turn, then have to field a phone call as they eventually get to the counter.

Well 2 ways of looking at it really. Say a black guy walks in and can speak english does he serve him? Sounds like it to me... Although if there is a large ethnic minority in the area,, common sense would say you hire someone who can speak both languages?

TBF Gazza, I don't think it's quite as easy as being able to employ someone who speaks English and Ethnic.

New people coming into the country and seeking to stay long term should be made to do a test about life in the UK or something.

I'm pretty sure this already exists. I imagine it would be terrificly comic.

Yeah. I know. I was being silly.

I was just looking up the What you need to know? section. I'm not sure I'd do that well.

Thats why its not racist. What the fella is saying is that he wanted to live here and he's worked hard to make a life for himself. If others choose to do the same then they need to work equally as hard to be part of the community.

Did the twat not realise that there are visitors from overseas, that aren't planning to stay here longer than a few weeks or so, that might possibly want to buy some fucking stamps and are unlikely to take a 6 month language course in order to do so?

I wonder if the "they should learn English and make an effort" brigade make an effort to learn any of the language when thye go abroad on holiday.  Or do they not need to because "they all speak English anyway..".  In my experience many people with suspicions of foreign people are the first to advocate the "ex-pat" lifestyle abroad.  One rule for them, another for us, it would often seem.

There's the world-famous Lace Museum. That must bring the tourists flocking in, all of them desperate to write to the folks back home with exciting lace-based postcards

The story of Nottingham lace is rather interesting....the way such heavyweight machines created such fine products a source of amazement.  Wollaton Hall is also worth a visit, containing as it does Nottinghamshire's largest pipe organ.

Then there's the Trip To Jerusalem, which often claims to be England's oldest pub.

Come autumn there is the ancient Goose Fair...which in recent years has lost its ancient feel, replaced with a more shot on the way home by Yardies ambiance.

Sadly, the museum commemorating Jesse Boot's emporium is now closed.
