Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: jayohaitchenn on Friday, March 20, 2009, 16:30:55 Turkish shop on Faringdon Road does bottles of red for £2.50. Happy days.
Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: Dazzza on Friday, March 20, 2009, 16:32:50 Generally you can’t go wrong with a bottle of Rioja, which always ignored or underrated as a red.
Campo Viejo is always a good bet and prices vary but start off reasonably affordable. You want to get involved with the old Virgin Wines club if you go through a few bottles. There is no obligation to buy and if you get the right deal you can pick 12 bottles worth over £180 RRP for as little as £60 delivered. They usually have £50 off introductory deals to boot. Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: land_of_bo on Friday, March 20, 2009, 16:43:13 To go with what, where are you buying?
In Sainsburys, their own Italian taste the difference Primitivo is a steal at £5.99 a bottle, easy drinking. As Dazza says there are some decent Rioja's around. I like to go for a 2001 reserva myself. Also take a look at the Argentian Malbecs, very nice indeed. Again you'll pick up a decent bottle in Sainsburys for under £7, from memory I think the Argento is pretty good. Enjoy. I love red wine, me. Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: A Gent Orange on Friday, March 20, 2009, 17:04:30 Bo makes a good point on the Malbec, particularly if you like full, punchy wines that tend to be a bit forgiving if you shop at the cheaper end of the market.
Majestic do a a very nice 2003 Cahors - Chateau De Gaudu (I think) for £6 or so. It;s young for a Cahors but not bad. There is also a good Torre Aldea Rioja there are the moment at 7.49. Also look out for the CVNE ones too, they are always good. They also do the Argento Malbec for about 5.99 or 4.49 for two. The Santa Rita Reserva which I think is Chilean is good too especially if you can get it for about six quid. I'll stop now... Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: Forza_Swindon on Friday, March 20, 2009, 17:12:10 Canti Negroamaro Zinfandel is proper lovely, on a 3 for £10 offer in Tesco right now - you'd nverbe able to tell it's so cheap!
Also Banrock Station Reserve Cabernet Sauvignnon-Shiraz is really nice, frequenly comes up on offer. Fontanafredda Barolo is gorgeous if you're looking to spend more, you can get that in Sainsbury's. Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: juddie on Friday, March 20, 2009, 17:16:42 the campo viejo rioja's are always safe (especially the one with the netting stuff around it), but yeah, I like the argentine malbecs. There's a nice Montelpulcano in Marks for about £7.
That chilean you mention AGO is nice... Love red wine, just wondered if anybody had any other recomendations away from the norm... Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: Forza_Swindon on Friday, March 20, 2009, 17:28:05 Also forgot to mention Cono Sur Riserva Merlot; another good choice for about £8 usually.
Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: A Gent Orange on Friday, March 20, 2009, 17:29:10 just wondered if anybody had any other recomendations away from the norm... Okay Vacqueyras, a Laurence Ferard selection of a Rhone AC. it's about a tenner but rather worth it. Or Pegovino with is Rhone Village AC, slightly less but equally French. Last one promise... Chateau La Causade, Bordeaux AC from Ste Croix du Mont. God anything is more fun that applying for PR jobs... Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: yeo on Friday, March 20, 2009, 17:31:26 Its all about 3 for a tenner.
I just bought some out of code Krone,8 for £6. Im total scum,I did tell the bloke if it makes me sick im sueing his shop. Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: Dazzza on Friday, March 20, 2009, 17:40:54 Lebanese reds are pretty good if you're after something different; Chateaux Kefraya and Chateau Muscar are two off the top of my head worth a lok at.
I must admit I struggle a bit with Red at home especially with food as it sends me off to sleep sharpish so I only have a couple of glasses before switching to the vodka Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, March 20, 2009, 17:57:23 Lebanese reds are pretty good if you're after something different; Chateaux Kefraya and Chateau Muscar are two off the top of my head worth a lok at. I use these and can recommend them - the advisors are pretty good to boot. So long as you don't take the mickey they're usually willing to credit for stuff you say you don't like as well Rioja is a bit oaky for my taste, but I enjoy it occasionally. a Chilean or Australian Merlot, Cab Sauv, or Carmaneret works for me. Not a Shiraz fan Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: nevillew on Friday, March 20, 2009, 20:19:13 I've got one more post before I make 3,000, and I want to make it a shit post like all the other 2,999 before!!! Bordeaux wasn't it? Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: Crozzer on Saturday, March 28, 2009, 00:27:16 You are indeed correct.
Next, Basil is trying to act the wine connoisseur to Mr Walt, boasting that, unlike him, “most of his guests wouldn’t know a Bordeaux from a claret”. Mr Walt points out that a Bordeaux is a claret, much to Basil’s surprise as he hasn’t a clue about wine. http://www.fawltysite.net/episode04.htm I buy wine by the box :P . Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: genf_stfc on Saturday, March 28, 2009, 09:33:28 never, ever, ever buy beaujolais - its vile insipid piss in my opinion.
sainsbury's had a very nice lussac st-emillion 2006 for about a fiver a while back - well worth looking out for, but since it improves with age its probably gone up to over a tenner in price since then. Title: Re: recommend a bottle of red Post by: flammableBen on Saturday, March 28, 2009, 11:48:55 I only drank one bottle of red last night and I was destroyed.

Just my opinion, French reds are best avoided due to price. Australian reds are often excellent and represent much better value. Beaujolais Nouveau is best avoided, don't understand why it's so popular. |
