My workmate's Mrs told him to order some flowers for Sunday just gone. Luckily I was there to tell him she was a daft bint.

You can borrow mine for the day if you want. She'll be getting sweet FA from me.

Mine's gone on as well, but I'd sooner she was still here so that I could spoil her!  Mother-in-law's still about, but she'll get fuck-all from us, unless anybody has a witch's broom manual going cheap! :guns:

Well i think I can trump you. Nearly 4 years ago, I attended my mother in law's funeral in the morning and my mum died in the evening. Mother's Day is not a good time for me.

I'm a super son.

That's a good one. I cooked my mum a meal last year and she loved it. I'm now thinking of what to do to trump it. Bring on the trumpets.

I've got a massive bouquet of flowers arriving today for the help she has given me with buying a house and all that, would it be rude to coincide them with mothers day also?
Just thinking cashflow and all that :-)

Taking mine out with my two sisters.

She told me she didn't want anything, 'not even a card.'

So that's what she'll be getting.

Why can't mothers in particular and woman in general, be honest?

Plus im a mum too but no bugger gets me anything! I have bossed my boyfriend into taking my 10yr old to Asda with £20. He will be in charge of the money and what he chooses to get for me but i couldnt exactly send him on his own... Im quite excited...I bet i'll end up with a remote controlled car or something! Same reason you never answer the "Does my bum look big in this?" question honestly. Hell's teeth, if men and women started being honest with each other, it'd be chaos

I'm completely skint, so I just made my mum a card. I'm also cooking a nice tea tomorrow, which isn't that special because I do it most days. Shoulder of Lamb with spicey fB marinade, bbq'd as long as it doesn't torrential it down tomorrow, if it's nice weather we'll eat out side. Think we'll have it with some pitta bread and salad and stuff. We've had heavy roast dinners about 5 Sunday's in a row, and whilst they've all been delicious, hopefully tomorrow will make a nice change.

Just in case any of you forgot and are completely desperate. Here's a low quality image of the card I made.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/flammableben/mothersday.png

PDF to download and print at will below.

I accidentally printed it off quite small, which worked out well because I could use the rest of the cardy-photo-paper-stuff as an envelope. I should be a blue peter presenter.

Mum moved to South Wales a few years ago, so she'll have to make do with a card. Tesco do some nice value range ones for 97p.  :)

Mother's Day is just a massive con, invented so that card companies can make money.  If you have to wait for one day a year to tell your Mum you appreciate her, you're not doing much of a job.  I phoned my Mum tonight for a chat - as I do twice a week, without a designated day to tell me to do so.  Same goes for father's day.  And valentine's day.  And people's birthdays. And christmas.

Actually, it's not. It has a lot of history behind it. Apparantly, Mothering Sunday (not Mother's Day, which is an American rip-off merchant's invention) dates back to when people from an area would all go to the "mother" church, the largest church/cathedral in the town. This would happen once a year on the 4th week of lent.

And there was something else historical about it which I have forgotten...

Erm, no. It wasn't invented by the card companies, the Mother's Day tradition goes all of the way back to ancient Greece and has been celebrated in England since the 16th century.

Likewise with the other 'days' and obviously Christmas and birthdays have a lot of history.

You're right that it has been commercialised to fuck though.

Fair play on the history.  Just get annoyed at the "kindness through neccessity" of the whole thing.  It loses meaning if you do it because you should, rather than want to.

I know, I hate Valentines Day for that. And I do agree that the one-day-a-year thing to celebrate mothers (and fathers) should not be necessary, as we should be pretty damn appreciative anyway

I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately both my parents are now dead but it means that I don't have to partake in those two any more. We ignore Valentine's Day for the very reason that you say - we love each other every day and don't need a hyped up load of bollocks to say it.

Too true mate.  If you need to wait 365 days to say it there's something wrong.
