I'm half way through a degree course with the Open University. Well worth checking their courses out if you want a degree and have some spare time each week to study. Though the costs can stack up, about £4k in total (6 courses at £700'ish each) but they do have a financial support scheme if you're on a low income and its free if your on benefits.

I have alot of student debt - You have to watch what you say because many people that massive hatred towards students which I can sometimes understand.

I didn't get a bank loan for the masters degree, I'm paying that by saving which isn't fun but the Career Development Loan banks offer can be horrific when paying back.

Yup I do.

I wasn't going to go to uni, but realised an extra 2 years of work on stupidly shit wages (i've heard some people get paid as low as 9k a year for what I wanted to do) wasn't really what I wanted. So I opted for 3 years of fun, independence and life experience at university. I absolutely loved it, best decision I ever made.

I couldn't decide so went travelling instead. Got A Levels though, best decision I ever made as what I wanted to do needed more experience as opposed to qualification.

I'd still really like to do a language course or something travel/geography related (higher qualification) but unfortunately I can't afford to do it.

Perhaps I should jack my job in and claim benefits as then it would be free? Actually lets not go down this route in view of a recurrence of a previous debate.

I've been to the USA and will hopefully next year venture to Central or South American with University. Depends what you do though.

I was going to do a year at an American uni but Plymouth had ended their exchange program with Boston and replaced it with somewhere I didn't want to go to.

FWIW I don't have a degree. Got a job in IT straight after a-levels and when you're living at home £13k a year is a lot of money.

I do wish I had a degree sometimes and have looked several times at OU courses but don't know what to do, certainly nothing fucking IT related!

Yeh. A lot of the geography here focuses on economics and politics as much as anything else

It's similar for the Geography course up in Manchester where there were a few economic/political modules, with some others linked to development and then only a couple of truly physical geography bits. Strangely you could have done all the human/economic/political courses and got a BSc, or all the physical scientific modules and got a BA - all dependent upon which one you applied for at college/sixth form - such was the freedom of the modules you took.

Yes, really glad I went, and despite the fact I had no idea why I chose the subject I did, I'm in an industry I really enjoy and am really interested in.

Uni was the most fun I've had, and although it sounds a bit twattish I found out a lot of stuff about myself, although not too sure if that was due to being at Uni or if it just 'that time of my life'.

Materials Science

Full title of your thesis? I'm not being funny, I'm just interested in what your original research was on.

There's a fair number of accountants/trainee accountants on here, which I didn't expect.  I nearly went down that route, did a year of CIMA but found it completely lacking in numbers which was the bit that interested me.

That's management accountancy for you!

Prediction of Fracture Toughness, Stress-Corrosion Cracking Thresholds, and Corrosion Fatigue Thresholds in Iron-Base Materials.

Just realized my Avatar is about fracture in iron and steel, that's scary.

Perhaps we should change the title of the forum to "65% graduates, 80% Bollocks" ?

And an actuary (I think I'm the only one). I did a masters in mathematics though

I thought about doing an actuary course instead of going to university. The person who told me about it was one of the scariest people i've ever met though, and i chose against it.

True story

My idea of higher education was having to walk up stairs to get to a lesson.

I got my courses mixed up, I never even came close to doing CIMA, I did ACCA.  I'd probably have stuck with CIMA a little longer, although either would eventually have seen me bail out in boredom.  Not that I'm knocking accountancy, just that it never ended up being what I;d expected.
