Title: Swindon Town verus Southend United matchday thread
Post by: Bogus Dave on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 00:23:34
I fucking hope we win this. Travelling in a car back with 3 southend fans will not be much fun otherwise. No comical fuck ups, strikers taking their chances and the midfield getting stuck in please

Well up for this one, the sun is out again so should be a good night for it.  Its the first of many must win games and I am feeling strangely optimistic.  I am going for 3-1 to us tonight.

I think we'll lose today and secure our place in the league one drop zone.

Its obvious the players don't care so why would they suddenly start being bothered about this game tonight?

Fuck knows how this one will go!

Got to stay as optimistic as possible and say, COME ON!!!!!!!

Our survival relies on a decent return from the next 4 games and we need to get a run going and along with a bucket load of confidence, so every fucker needs to turn up tonight and give it there all, players and crowd!

Bring it on!

So, it's "Do it for Dave Day" at the County Ground this evening. A worthy cause I'm sure.

We badly need a win. I'll take an own goal or a goal deflected of a pigeon. I'll take anything if it means we win. I can see a draw though.

I have been considering the pigeon scenario as well.  On balance, I think it represents our best hope.

Town to win 2-1.  Can't keep a clean sheet at the moment, so can see us conceding at least one.

The players need to give their all and we, as supporters, need to give them our support otherwise Div 2, here we come.

I've imagined a hard-fought 1-1 draw. We'll equalise with a Gordon Greer header in the 88th minute. Seeing the form Sarfend are in at the minute a draw in any other circumstances wouldn't that bad a result, however we need to get a run going and a midweek home game is the perfect place to start.

Swindon Town: Phil Smith; Kevin Amankwaah, Gordon Greer (Captain), Sean Morrison, Jamie Vincent; Hal Robson-Kanu, Michael Timlin, Owain Tudur Jones, Anthony McNamee; Simon Cox, Billy Paynter

Substitutes: Peter Brezovan (GK), Lilian Nalis, Mark Marshall, Jack Smith, Blair Sturrock

No changes.

I've been avoiding making any comments because I'm scared of jinxing things.  (Don't ask.  I don't know how either.)  But it's half time now, so I'm safe.

Delighted with the performance.  Looks as if the lads have located their cojones.  At fucking last.

Key thing now is not conceding in the first 10 mins of the second half.  If we can maintain a 2 goal lead for a decent length of time, Southend will start to lose hope.

Dare we hope for a 3rd?

Then I hear Phil King going on about the last thirty minutes of the first half being the best he has seen Swindon play 'for seasons'...

Last 30 of the 1st half was indeed some of the best football in a decade.  The 2nd half was a thoroughly professional job well done to get the result.  They've taken some stick recently, and for good reason, but I can't knock anyone tonight.

Title: Re: Swindon Town verus Southend United matchday thread
Post by: michael on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 22:17:51
What impressed me was that after about 35 minutes Southend starting getting more ball, but we slowed the game down and kept possession, with the 'oles' coming out. We pretty much played out until half time.

I thought Tudor-Jones was MOM, a monster in midfield and got through a lot of work, but Amankwaah and Greer also both had excellent games. In fact everyone played well.

Other results went our way too.

Overall it is a good confidence boosting win, but 3 points today isn't worth as much as 3 points on Saturday.

Wow im not sure where that performance came from but it was very much welcomed. The first half was the best i've seen us play all season.

Everyone pulled their weight and done what they had to do,quite impressed with OTJ not creative but won a lot of headers and broke a lot of their play up.

Let's hope this the start of something good.

Well that was a pleasent evenings entertainment. I haven't seen as play as well as did in the first half all season. Some of the passing was simply superb. We won pretty much every ball in the centre of the park as well something i haven't seen us do for a long time. Second half was more even but we defended well and kept it solid. A 3rd clean sheet for the season and well deserved.

Onto the players then. Amankwaah was superb. He got forward when he could and won every challenge he could. Kanu and Macca were dangerous and this time effective probably because the 2 CMs were doing a good job. Paynter looked strong and commited and Cox had his best game for a while. Great start to this 4 game crunch period.

Superb. We destroyed them first half, they were chasing shadows.

Second half was not as fluid, but we didn't need it to be. We killed the game, ran the clock down and got the third.

The midfield worked damned hard, closing down and battling. All that was missing in many games was suddenly present tonight.

Not getting carried away, we have a long hard battle ahead. But put that effort in and we'll be OK!

Timlin my MOM.

Title: Re: Swindon Town verus Southend United matchday thread
Post by: ronnie21 on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 22:34:59
Can only repeat what everyone else is saying, splendid first half performance, easily best of season, could not quite hit the heights in the second half and did tend to sit back a bit.  But defence dug in deep and kept 'em out, heart in mouth time when Smith fumbled that easy catch but he made amends with a fine save!  For me Timlin was easily MOM, but it is all a matter of opinion!

One swallow doesnt make a summer. We've all gone enough times this season to know we can put in a performance like that one week and put a totally inept one in the following week.

I'm sure I'll get the usual negative, miserable blah blah blah thrown at me but this result is total pointless unless we pick up a minimum of 4 points in our next two games. Hereford home and Northampton away.

As for the game, we were in total control start to finish. Our keeper caught the ball. Our defender won everything in the air, the middle two won everything in the middle and when they didnt have the ball got it back sharpish. Our wingers were direct and caused Southend problem. Our front two worked their bollocks off as usual.

If the game continuted untill midnight - they still wouldnt have troubled us.

I liked Tudur Jones, thought he did a good job in there with Timlin. Defence was awesome and when we had that long spell of possession we were brilliant.

But it's all pointless if we can't beat Hereford on Saturday!

I hope the corner has been turned. The old addage of we only play well against the top teams didn't ring so true for me tonight - Southend were poor and mostly played hoofball, but we didn't get dragged down to their level like we did against Hartlepool and Cheltennam. We actually bossed the game from start to finish.

If we turn in another performance on Saturday against Hereford then we could just be on the road to staying up.

I thuoght we looked a bit nervy in the first 15 - Amankwanah left his man unmarked to get in a free volley and then they managed to screw up a 2v 1 down our left when HRK went AWOL. After that we were superb in all areas of the park. The first goal was a fantastic pass by Cox to Macca, a great run from him and a cool finish by HRK. The move for the penalty originated from a great tackle by Cox. The 3rd was a good tenacious run from Timlin who was tripping over the ball but did enough to make the defender do a dumb challenge.
The back 4 worked well as a unit. Smith was good apart from one dropped catch. The midfield were functional. Tudor Jones was excellent. Timlin was overall good but when he admires his handy work he's often caught out not tracking back. Paynter was blowing out of his arse again after 30 minutes. Cox had his best game for ages as did Macca.
Overall, we were superb. We tried to play the ball on the deck and out to the wings and it worked instead of constant hoofball.
I'm really looking forward to hereford now.

Awesome first half, especially towards the end.

We sat back in the second half a bit too much for my liking, but we were pretty solid. Show the importance of a clean sheet. If we'd conceded during the second half as per normal town, would have been a different game.

Wait that's a bit retarded isn't it? If something else had happened game would have been different shock.

They do my fucking head in. How the hell can a team that plays like that in the first half be in the relegation zone? Same players, same formation, same tactics. One game shit, the next brilliant (sort of). If they can play like that against Hereford we could see double figures.

I still think Phil Smith is shit. He missed a couple of crosses, fucked up a few kicks and his distribution was abysmal.

That second penalty was a bit of a joke, sure he was fouled but his last touch just before was on target for the corner flag.

Marshall is looking a lot better every time I see him. Still not quite up to it though.

I'd be interested to hear a Southend perspective - as much as we looked a bit good for large parts of the game, they just seemed to offer absolutely nothing. Very promising nonetheless, pleased to see the defence looking a bit more solid.

Please win again on Saturday, I can't take much more justified optimism being smashed to pieces the following game.

I would say the opposite about Phil Smith. He fumbled one quite badly, but apart from that I thought he was pretty safe at claiming them. Much less stressful than the couple of times I've seen Brez this season anyway.

Not sure how anyone can knock Smith after tonight (and from what I've heard, after Leeds). One thing that really stuck out for me was the bollockings he gave out early on, after they had a free header and another chance. Never seen Brez do that.

otherwise, yaay :)

Smith fumbled one (which ive certainly see given as a foul on the keeper on many occasions) he tried to claim it realised he didnt have it, went back towards his line and saved it.

As far as I remember he claimed every other cross and corner and caught them!

Timlin was superb today, and greer and amankwaah also put in great shifts.

Cox never stopped running for a second - i love the effort he shows, just wish we could use him more.

Brilliant to have that winning feeling back, roll on Saturday.

*I think thats one eyed to say the least. No mention of the save from the deflected shot, I can only remember one duff kick, and no poor distribution apart from that. There were a couple of good catches where we have been accustomed to St Flappy's 'punches'. He did drop one cross I'll grant you.

** so, not a joke then

Agreed on Marshall, although I couldn't work out why he and McNamee were on the wrong wings. There wasn't enough turning inside to make it a valid tactic.

Apart from the first goal, I wasn't impressed by McNamee. too many blind alleys, and he definitely bottled a couple of challenges. He was constantly having to be directed by Wilson and Byrne as well - you'd think he'd have learnt something by now.

To be fair though it doesn't take much more than about 10 minutes to see Smith can kick pretty well and Brezovan obviously went to kicking school with Evans and Griemink.

My first home game of the season and we win 3-0!  It's alright, I'm there on Saturday so we'll win again no doubt..!  Good game, played like Real Madrid, late run at the playoffs...?!   :D

Southend looked pointless, no threat really apart from the Smith fumble.  We didn't look an awful lot better in the final 3rd, but played some good stuff, "lacking that final ball" (I hate that cliche)...  Tudor Jones really impressed me, great in the tackle and gave us some bite in midfield!

Timlin looks different class now he's back in the middle and Morrison is getting better every time I watch him. Never thought I'd say the words, but with Greer and Morrison at the back, we don't miss Ifil in the slightest.

I actually like the Smith fumble for one of two reasons:

1) He didn't go to punch it and the only reason it was fumbled because it was a very closely contested ball.

2) He recovered well and saved the shot that resulted.

Doesn't matter basically, Smith did what he did and it didn't lead to a goal. Stop over-criticising something which does not need to be.

Fair enough Batch, I might be harsh, HRK had a good first half and disappeared after that. McNamee responded to the bench in getting into positions but didn't form much of a deterrent, much of the second half it was happening right in front of me and I was looking to be a bit picky.

What's the point in deliberately trying to criticise him when he had a good game? There was no point in him urgently spraying the ball everywhere in the second half as it was pretty clear we were trying to slow the game down so Southend couldn't get back into it.

But whatever, you were quite clearly a bandwagon jumper back at the start of the season and are now to stubborn to admit that Smith isn't actually that bad a 'keeper.

I guess Marshall and McNamee didn't swap because McNamee already had their lump of a No 6. (also their only goal threat) pretty much beaten every time and so it made sense to let the fresher midget have a go at their fresh left-back.

That is what I should have written.

Marshall isn't much of a footballer (yet), he can't see or make simple passes, he's often on his heels and he's really just a push and run merchant. But he's highly effective when the opposition are tired and his crosses are pretty decent too.

Apart from the positive things noted by others, it was a joy to see us keeping possession so often, and my MOM, Greer , was such an influence with good distribution from the back. We have usually had to put up with hoofers, like Ifil, O'Hanlon, Haywood, Reeves, but it seems that (hopefully) Morrison also likes to place his passes somewhere near a red shirt.

Back to Smithy.....IMO it was a foul on him which resulted in the fumble.  Think he would have had it safe otherwise and I was waiting for the ref to blow for a free kick.  Fair play to him reacting fast to claim it back.  Yes he didnt have much to do but how he can be criticised is beyond me.  One player you never see slagging off the fans, never moaning, just getting his head down and doing the job and taking his chance when hes been given it. A model professional IMO.

Although Macca is a leftie and Marshall is a rightie, both are proficient with their other feet, in fact every time i've seen marshall when he's on the right he'll try and cut in and cross with his left. I can't believe people knocking Smith last night.  His save in the first half, a blinder, meant their best attack ended in a corner, which we then broke from and scored.

His distribution was what it needed to be, safe.  He threw the ball out and passed it out (from pass backs) a lot in the first half.  In the 2nd we changed tactics and this was not needed.  Plus his goal kicks are much more contestable than Brezovan's.  It's like the guys behind me moaning in the 2nd half about throw ins going backwards to the free man - we are winning chaps, it's all about keeping that lead now.  If we were 1-0 up in a tight game I can understand people wanting more urgency or to keep the pace and passing going, but at 2-0 without a win for an age and in the relegation zone the first thought has to be to keep hold of that once 2-0 and cruising.

If anyone listened to Wilson after the game they should have been impressed.  The team were sent out 2nd half to keep turning the defence of Southend.  He told them how demoralising it can feel (and we should know) to be 2 down and keep running back to goal to defend rather than being able to face up the play and push us back.

As a self confessed Smith "basher" (well I have this season) I have to say the bloke did nothing wrong last night, kept goal as well, actually better, than Brezovan has of late.  I am praying that this is the sign of things to come and that the lads realise the potential they've got.

Loving the defensive line up at the moment too, Amank, Morri, Greer and Vincenzo, fantastic.  OTJ won a lot in the air last night, Timlin was the Gattuso style player we need right now.  HKR and Macca had good games and Billy and Coxy put a decent shift in too.

No complaints!!!

Actually, to be fair rather than "people" you should probably insert my user name.

As I've said my main complaint last night was his distribution, other than that he fumbled a cross and that's about it. But one performance doesn't make you a great player and I still think that over the season that Brezovan is the better keeper.

The way Malpas changed the keeper every time they made a mistake at the beginning of the season caused both keepers to lose all their confidence and play shit. On that basis I'd prefer Smith to stay in goal at present, if he goes with Brezovan again he'll be worried a single mistake will cost him his place.

I'd just like to see Smith getting the ball out to our players rather than punting it up field.

Swindon is so boring that even the local wildlife has started to top itself. It's clear to me that our players were affected by this, hence the poor result.

Would have worked better if Macca was crossing from the left and Marshall from the right using their stronger feet.

No it wouldn't.

To be fair it's probably higher up the seaside holiday list than Swindon.

My Dad's review of last night's game

Yes the second half of the first half was a joy to watch as we pinged the ball around.

Going through the team, Smith was competent without a lot to do, he did drop one cross which i'm sure other teams will concentrate on.

The back 4 are solid, Greer and Morrison work well together, Vincent is the best left back we have and Amankwaah is the revelation. His two assets over Smith is his height (i think Wilson likes height)and his engine which seems to be an asset with a lot of black players.

The midfield is still the main problem. Timlin was excellent and broke up many attacks to start our own. OTJ is a monster but mainly with his height. Put a light on his head and he could be a light house. To be honest he didn't do a lot apart from giving away free kicks. He is a beanpole and not that strong in the tackle. I guess he is still settling in.

We then have Mac and Kanu on the wings. Mac creates but doesn't score, Kanu scores but doesn't create, between them there is one very good player.

Up front Cox and Paynter run themselves into the ground, although it looked as though Paynter took a knock as he struggled in the second half.

A worry is our strength in depth as we had Marshall (a poor mans Mac) Smith, a good cover at full back, Nalis all hair not much else, Sturrock, a good runner of channels but not much else, Brez, who usually drops the soap in the shower, and Ifil competent cover at the back.

I guess we could give Macklin who scored 2 more goals for the reserves this week a run out but we have a load of injuries.

My worry would still be midfield, Southend allowed us to play in the first half but not the second, and we didn't create anything in the second half.

Or, our attacking play in the first half pushed Southend back and in the second we defended a 2-0 lead comfortably.

Much more positive.

My old man is never overly positive, that's quite a positive review for him!!

Interesting view from a southend fan:

The best thing about last night was the Roast Pork (with apple stuffing) bun's. They were an absolute treat. And apart from the opening spell, we were dreadful. It was like watching 11 strangers play football with each other. The first goal came from OUR own attack and the truly brilliant McNamee sucked THREE players out to him and he put a lovely ball into RHK who, as ever, glided the ball home beautifully into Mildy's bottom right hand corner. What we could do with him back at the club and he rightfully got a standing ovation from the Southend fans as he left the pitch.

The second goal should have never stood. We (once again) are attacking and the ball gets played into Grant who was literally wrestled to the ground by Cox who ran up the other end of the pitch, gave it to BP and Clarke gets the right side of him by Sankofa STUPIDLY comes in from behind/at the side and gives away a needless penalty. I would have subbed him then for such stupidness. After that, we created **** all for nigh on an hour and it was only when Scanell came on we looked half dangerous. They were quite happy keeping the ball and whenever we got it, we gave it away time and time and time again. I'd love to know how many times we passed the ball to them or our lack of control gifted them the ball. It was embarrassing. They better be in training today and i hope Tilly/Brush are reading them the riot act. The third goal, well, a penalty!? You have got to be kidding. As a previous poster alludes to, he went down like a sack of ****, but to be honest, the 6 minute added time sign was the most annoying thing about that minute of play as we could have been there till 6am and not looked like scoring.

The subs?! Too late. How Grant stayed on!? Pass. How Barnard went off instead of Robinson?! Pass. NO-ONE played well and no-one can have a mark above 5 as it was that bad. Even Dervitte started needlessly hoofing the ball all over the place when he had plenty of time on the ball. Swindon were a good outfit, with HRK, McNamee, Tudor Jones, Cox, Morrison and Amankwaah. Them 6 alone, would get into a Southend first eleven. But the most annoying thing was that we gifted them the goals on a nice silver platter. They didn't even have to work for them.

Kev

I can tell him why Barnard went off, because he was shite and must have touched the ball about twice.

I've come to the conclusion that Garry flippin Parker is not a scout, just think he bought a half season ticket and is too embarrassed to admit it!  He was there again last night, he can't get enough of the club, or the gammon baps!

Either that or he had to keep on coming to matches until he saw Coxy have a decent game.

Was a good performance.Seemed as if all the little things went our way for once.

Can't help but think that Saturday is going to be completely different though.Hereford will stick 11 men behind the ball and we'll have to break them down.Wish i was going, its a massive game.Still last night will surely have given them a bit more confidence. The fuckers can do it :)

That game in the JPT at Brighton (Malpas last game) he was utter shite.

But he did well at Colchester and last night.

Yep, its probably the one thing Kanu and McNamee both dont do.

Just knock it down the line and chase it. They arent as quick as Marshall but they arent slow. Every now and again I wish McNamee would just knock it and run rather than the step overs, just to mix it up a bit.

Spot on Larwood...last night kind of fitted the pattern of playing well against top 8 sides.

So far we've yet to beat any of the other strugglers in the league...not completely sure why, but if we can eek out an ugly win v Hereford, then it might just show a glimmer of hope.
