Title: Swindon @ Colchester - The Matchday Thread
Post by: Rich Pullen on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, 10:17:39
This one seems to have sneeked up on me. As always I'm not at all confident about this, but what's new?

I've gone with 1-1 as we do better with the Promotion/Play-Off contenders - even though CUFC are outsiders.

Took the car in for new tyres this morning, but they couldn't get one of the wheels off because the locking wheel nut was fucked. It would just so happen that the wheel they couldn't get off had the baldest tyre and would more than likely fail my MOT tomorrow. They were fairly certain it was the nut that was rounded and not the key and advised I booked it in to a mechanic to have the fucker drilled out = £££.

Drove home with only one new tyre on and dug out my spare locking nut key, just to try it like, and with a bit of brute force (whacked the wrench on and me jumping up and down on it) it came off! Took it straight back to the tyre place and had the other tyre fitted. Result.

I am about to have have two new tyres put on the Flashmobile in ten minutes.

Im off at around 2-30ish........i have a good feeling about tonight.

2-1 away win...

Going to Leeds with a win would be great (I'm dreaming).

Tonights Fixtures

Brighton v Southend
Carlisle v Leyton Orient
Colchester v Swindon
Hereford v Bristol Rovers
Leeds United v Yeovil
Millwall v Northampton
Franchise v Huddersfield
Peterborough v Scunthorpe
Stockport v Hartlepool
Walsall v Crewe

2-1 to us.  I'm going to predict us for a win every time we play now, on the basis that we're going down if we keep drawing all the time.  (Outstanding piece of logic there, I'm sure you'll agree.)

In all four divisions, only Swansea have drawn more games than we have so far this season (with us tied in second place along with Morcambe, Cardiff and some other team that I can't remember.)

i've gone for 1.1 but as we performed well on saturday, it will probably be an awful perfomance and we'll get stuffed.,

I'm going for the Town to nick it by 1 goal.  Doubt that we will keep a clean sheet either.

Going to Leeds with a win would be great (I'm dreaming).

Tonights Fixtures

Brighton v Southend
Carlisle v Leyton Orient
Colchester v Swindon
Hereford v Bristol Rovers
Leeds United v Yeovil
Millwall v Northampton
Franchise v Huddersfield
Peterborough v Scunthorpe
Stockport v Hartlepool
Walsall v Crewe

Those are the key matches tonight elsewhere for us tonight, IMHO.  Only really Leeds have a chance of the playoffs from those 3, so they will be going for it and should turn Yeovil over, but Carlisle need the points and have played more games than others around them, so hoping they do the job against the O's

Looking forward to this. Leaving work at 4pm to get up there. (all on my own)

You'd think a draw would be a good result but we desperatly need a win tonight. IF we play like we did on Saturday i can see us sneaking it. It's a big IF though...

this is big. If we play like we did saturday we'll win 2-1 I reckon, play like we did against Cheltenham and we'll get beat. Draws are bno good any more, so let's go balls out and try and win it.

I fancy it.

Talking to a Swansea fan mate of mine today...and he reckons Tudor Jones has not really recovered fully from his ligament injury sustained at the CG.  By which he meant he's lost teh zip, that made him look a decent prospect.

Can't ever recall meeting a Bury fan...club I've a bit of time for though.

Give it another half a dozen games and it will be time to focus on the possible make up of L2 for next season.  A cursory look indicates it being horribly norvern.

I was only expecting 1 point from Dongs, Col and Leeds. Not sure why I feel so disshartened.

Even if it pans out like that we still have to play Yeovil, Brighton, ....., etc. It is not impossible. But I am braced for impact from the bump to league 2.

Sadly i am too  :(

Just got back from work, it's 2-1 to them yes?

That's my prediction on the prediction league and I'd win money off it. It'd be nice if we won though...But I agree with KT, I don't care us much as about us getting the points back as much as I would at home or an away game I was there. Not sure if it's apathy or just because I'm not expecting anything from this.

I think I get more cheerful about Swindon when we're shit. I enjoy it more, less pressure or expectation. I think it helps that I seem happier than everyone one else for some relative joy factor action.

Compared to mid-table that is, not when we're doing proper good.

Fair play to them.  The fact that they're doing as well as they are with a sub-4,000 fan base is quite an achievement if you ask me.  (Which no one did, I know.)

I think it will too. The new boards biggest mistake hasn't been Malpas or taking too long to appoint Wilson, it's the "Championship in 3 years" nonsense they spouted when they first took over - stood against all there other signals of running the club as a tight, leak-proof, ship.

IF we can bounce straight back it wouldn't be the end of the world by any means, it might put us a year or so behind our plans but in the grand scheme of things a choice between season of mid-table obscurity in league 1 or a promotion from league 2 i'd probably go with seeing us win most games - unfortunately it might not work out that way, although i suspect it probably would, especially if we could keep hold of our actual football players

I think I agree with everything there. And whilst I see it worrying that we'd have no safety net from the non-league, I still think I've got enough fan arrogance to keep the belief that it could never happen too us.

Big Club small league might suit us for a few years, even if we can't get out straight away.

Can see us getting a good beating at leeds saturday just like yeovil did tonight.

Goal difference may yet be a factor...although we haven't had a real thrashing yet this season, you can see this lot chucking the towel in sometime soon.

Incidentally Wilson will have had the same number of games that MM had on Saturday, 14, and there can be no chance even if we win that he won't have got as many points.

Strange, that no one is calling for his head.

i have?  seriously i thought at least us lot would be above that shit, i saw us from a box in the prem at old trafford and on the terraces of accrinton & stanley and as far as i'm concered there's little difference; we're not above rochdale or macc town fans, just like sheff utd or bolton fans, or even chelski aren't above us - that is unless we throw our toys out of the pram and behave like spoilt shits.

i don't want to see us go down again but if we do and fans that i thought better of give up on us i will be more disappointed in them than the team to be honest

The general consensus under MM was that we had a decent side , but a shit manager.

The bald fact is that in the same number of games, Wilson has achieved less wins and points.

Danny Wilson was the first to dismiss the "it's not MY team" thing though.

We've had plenty of time to sort things out. Safe or relegated we need to radically change this squad.

The one thing this club has not had over the past few years in its management is stability.  Since King we have moved through Iffy, Wise, Sturrock and Malpas rather quickly.  My opinion is, whatever happens between now and the end of the season, this is Danny Wilson's team and should be for at least the next two years.  Let him build a team that he can really call his, then judge him on that.

3 poor peices of defending cost us again, the 3rd a right rickett from Sean i think, not sure whther its because they have no confidence in brez, but panicing cost us dear, oh and shooting practice wouldnt go amiss, some shocking shooting tonight god knows how many times we hit the back of the stands, if we could have got some more on target their goalie didnt look much, didnt think anyone had a stinker as they def put the effort in, but no one really stood out, disappointing as they were no better than us and were there for the taking.

Poor performance all round from us, not sure I would have thrown Tudor straight into the midfield like that without at least a couple of days on the training pitch with the team.

At least now backwards logic dictates we will definately win at leeds.

Just got back. Most of the team were shit today. Brezovan specifically never caught one ball in the first half and was to blame for one of the goals. Would like to see Phil Smith back in goal to see if he can get the number 1 shirt back. Brez was shit, Timlin was shit. Cox appears to have given up. Macca had his moments, Marshall dove as soon as he came on as he did against Frecklington on Saturday. For the first 25 minutes none of the team knew what they were doing or seemed to know where they should be playing. Its going to be very difficult now so stay up but not impossible. If we can limp through this season and stay up, we need a massive cull whether we be in L1 or L2. Doesn't matter, The players simply dont seem to care. We will play well Saturday as its against a decent side. Next week is an absolutely massive week. Lose the next 3, then we are well and truly down. I think Wilson will neeed to look at bringing his own backroom staff in, in the summer but will it really do anything??? We just looked completely clueless and there didnt ever really look to be a game plan. Players didnt run for anything and just stood there blaming each other half the time.

does anyone on here still rate Brezovan? - Granted I've only seen him about 10 times but I haven't once felt confident with him in net. It is so frustrating to have to read 'from a Brezovan flap' or 'from a poor punch from Brezovan' etc. We should have cashed in on this fella when we had the chance and got a proper keeper in.

Frecklington is'nt at MK Gazza, and as for Marshall diving, that was a definite foul as was saturdays from Lewington.
Brez- Shaky first half, too much punching which cost us, second half he caught everything and looked better.
Manky, started v badly and only a bit better after that
Vincent, average
Morrison, clear error for the 3rd and pretty sure it was him leaving platt unmarked for the others, long throws not much else.
Greer, steady.
Macca, good outlet but didnt do much damage, and shock of shocks a bollocking for a bad tackle!
Timlin, crap
Tudur jones, i'll be polite and say i didn't notice him doing anything rubbish.
Kanu, good goal and was looking our most threatening player, not sure why he was taken off.
Paynter-huffed and puffed, missed a sitter of a header 1st half.
Cox, not very good, poor shot/pass selection, played too deep.

Ground not bad, steps very steep and a little breeze blockish but not as bad as leicester.
Car park!!! Appalling, needed a boat to get to the stadium, they need to look at that sharpish.
Programme statto needs to be sacked littered with errors on us, and even had Nardiello playing for us!!
Result poor, and could have gone either way at 2-2 they upped their game, we sat back, game over!

I kept faith in him to recapture his form. He hasn't, and neither had Smith. Brez has had a chance and can't complain if he is dropped.  Would still like to know whether the attempted punching  is down to coaching or an individual descision. Either way I don't blame Granville really.

We have gone from a situation where we had 'two good keeper with one needing to leave sooner or later because they are too good to sit on the bench' to where we are today - they can both sod off!

Honestly though I still don't know why we have gone backwards so quickly. Sure we lost Miguel, Robbo and Zaboub - is that all it took to send us into shittyness? Or is it all abot confidence? Or what?

Oh fucking deary me!  What a disaster!

Danny Wilson told the team to keep it tight for ten.  They did.....for about ten seconds.
Goal down inside a minute and if Colchester could shoot we could of been 4 zip down in ten minutes.
We got back into the game with the pen, looked as if we could score (glaring miss from Paynters head) and then conceded a shit goal in the last minute.
Second half we looked better got the leveller and then threw it all away with another balls up.
Heres my sum ups for what its worth:
Brezovan:Punches everything and doesnt seem to be able to catch a thing...big ironic cheer in the second half when he came out and caught a cross.
Amankwaah:Still prefer him in Midfield but he did ok.
Morrison: Not great....clear your lines son!
Greer: Solid enough.
Vincent: Not good for me and shaky.
Robson-Kanu: Nice goal but needs to run into that box a bit more.
(Marshall 77): First time i have seen him play since Malpas last game away at Brighton and i thought he did well as he attacked from the off and he was chopped down at every turn.
Timlin: Pants - really poor - the end. :bye:
Tudur Jones: 'missing' for me and a huge fuck up miss kick for their last goal when he had about ten inutes to take nine touches before clearing it.
(Razak 90),: Not enough time to see him.
McNamee: Played better but needs to run into the box.
Cox: Indifferent. Now hes got 20 goals i hope it helps his game.
Paynter: Won alot of headers and held the ball up well but never seemed to be in the right place at the right time - woeful miss with the free header in the first half. :(..alot easier to execute than the MK goal he nabbed.
Subs Not Used: Phil Smith, Ifil, Nalis.

Summary - gifted a mediocre team (who have taken 6 points and scored 6 past us) a win. Town allowed a five foot midget to boss the game. How many headers did that cunt win for fucks sake? How he never got MOM is beyond me.
Couldnt defend again and i lost count of how many clearence kicks we spooned into the air inside the penalty area. Brez punched no further than the edge of the box.

Said it once or twice and i will say it again:

'Relegation is a cup and our name is on it'. ??? :1st:

Not taking three points of Cheltnumb was enough to suggest that the end is nigh.

I am sorry to say that i predict a real spanking at Elland Road on Saturday and I will be there to see it. :spank:

Yep training this week should be Brez catching, Forwards shooting on target, find someone who can take a free kick round the box (how many did we waste?) Utilise Morrisons throws ( doesn't matter how long and accurate they are if you only put 3 in the box with no follow up from midfield), and sort the corners out, near post every time/short corners dont work! I bet they only had 2 or 3, 6 footers in the whole side, did we take advantage, no!

Flattest away game I've been to this season, players weren't up for it and neither were 99% of our supporters. Why go all that way to support the team if all you're going to do is sit there?
Relegation is now rapidly approaching and while I agree that the majority of our team aren't good enough, they don't even appear to try half the time.
The albino midget that played for Colchester last night epitomised what we lack: a midfielder who doesn't stop running; who tackles; who links up play; who never gives up.
Our players lose the ball and stop running; we never close down the opposition; we don't create space; we never look for the ball and we're afraid to get in the opposition's box.

I left my house at at 12.30pm yesterday and got home at 2.45 this morning. I am slighty pissed off that I didn't even see my team make an effort.

Ed raised the point last night that Cox is too much all over the pitch. He then asked Wilson his thoughts on this and Wilson was saying he liked that and mentioned something like Wayne Rooney.

Anyway, the only player who does all that is Cox, but as you say Hertha we need that from a midfielder. It's problematic with Cox because he's forever out of position.

I'd go back further and suggest it's been down hill since Wise left (and in actual fact it only went uphill for about 2 months following a previous 2 year decline).  Sturrock's organisation and ability to get his old pals to come here for a bit managed to stop a rot (Wise going was the same time as the club's off field capitulation) that was likely to be onset in any other club.  Wise managed to get a system of play that worked for the players we had at League 2 level, not sure he would be doing much better at this level once the initial confidence begins to wain, not with the same players anyway.  Cox & McNamee apart, we have not signed a permanent player who would be much if anything above League 2 level.  Easton is ok, was a stand out player for Leyton Orient in League 2.

If we go down, I think we are better placed than we were in 2005/06 and we bounced back with more problems than we have now.

Absolutely frustrating night.Memo to CUFC-GET SOME FUCKING SIGNPOSTS MADE UP!after driving about another 20 miles after actually seeing the ground, finally found it,just got in and Platt scores after 40 seconds!I've never seen such a disorganised rabble as our back 5 and,as Flash said, we should have been 4-0 down after 10 mins.Vincent will never have a more shocking start to a game.Is that disorganisation down to DW?You decide.Platt v Morrison was quite literally "man against boy"-the lad had a game to forget and was badly at fault for their second.OTJ horribly responsible for the winner,he understandably looked rusty.MacNamee, once again our most creative player, how Paynter missed the header only he knows-it was an easier chance than Saturdays.I dont agree that Cox seems to have given up,he looked full of it to me.I think we missed Jack Smith,Amankwah's distribution from the back was just route one.Kanu, brilliant goal but little apart from that.Greer was our best defender but that's not saying much. One thing I have to say,I dont hold with all this "DW inherited a shit side"-he's now signed 5 players, nearly half a team, two of which he obviously doesn't trust, and we haven't improved since MM.

Brez 5-I would stick with him, just!
Amank 5
Greer 6
Morrison 4
Vincent 4
Kanu 5
Timlin 4-games just seem to pass him by in midfeld
OTJ 4-reserve judgement, but not impressive last night
MacNamee 7
Cox 6
Paynter 6
Marshall 6-looked quite lively

What goes around comes around....enjoy!

We drove from the North (when I was living in Edinburgh) and there was a sign City had put up saying 'congratulations Swindon Town for relegating the gas'. Made me chuckle a little.

Anywhere where it's said how many we had there last night? I would guess at about 220.

That was awful last night. And it was cold. And whilst the game was on, the concourse TV was showing an exciting end to a cricket match with wickets falling every 15 minutes or so. And then there is us celebrating a 3rd equaliser whilst the flag was up for offside and the entire home support just laughing at us.

The last time I felt like such a dickhead was precisely 2 minutes after joyously singing "2-0 and you fucked it up" chant v Plymouth whilst sat right next to their fans.

I haven't been much in the last couple of seasons for reasons I will not bore you with but I did go last night so here's my two pence worth..

I'm not a doom and gloom merchant, not even close. I think of myself as an optimistic realist and don't see the point in seeing the down side of things just for the sake of it.

Having said that though, on the evidence of last night (and a quick glance at the league table) I do genuinly believe we will go down. That's the first time I've thought that this season. We're just not very good really are we? We're not that awful either - I've seen far worse Town sides but ultimately we're not good enough to get ourselves out of the position we've got ourselves into. We played ok at times last night and gave Col U a reasonable game, although the first 15-20 minutes were abymsal and embarassing and we could/should have been 3 or 4 down (then again, Paynter should have scored so I suppose it should have been 4-1)

If we had had those same players plus Wilson as manager since the start of the season I think we would be doing a lot better, i.e. not setting the division alight but not in danger of relegation. It sounds like we have played much better than that (MK on Saturday) but even when we do play well we still can't win so I can't really see a way out.

I'm certainly not a Fitton basher but it's clear he is going to have to invest some money to get things going on the pitch, whether that means getting out of Division 3 next season or getting back into it. Success on the pitch will obvioulsy lead to better crowds, cup runs, TV money etc and once that happens he can go back to his ideal of the club being self supporting. He's going to have to get the ball rolling though by putting (even) more money into the club. I can't see how else the club is going to move forward.

I really hope I'm wrong about us getting relegated because another season back in Division cunting Four is really, really, really unappealing, especially after getting out of it so recently. I'm afraid if that was to happen, my support of STFC would just amount to looking out for their results on Final Score/Soccer Saturday etc..It will just be a season wasted. I just could not be doing with it. I so hope I am wrong though.

We might be better placed off the field, but I cant see Danny Wilson and Dave Byrne providing the same appeal Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet did.

OST, I think if you went to the first game of the season and saw 11 lads really giving it everything they had, getting stuck in, I bet you would want to come again.

I know I would.

Im sorry, but I think this team has done bad damage to our support. We need a team we look forward to watching the week. Know loads of lads who said fuck this after just 2 months of Malpas and the players just not giving a fuck.

If there is just 11 blokes out there just doing a job and collecting a wage in the lower leagues, then Im sorry but that is not good enough for people to pay money for it and get excited about it, no matter how talented you may be. Not good enough, never ever will be.

One of the reasons I moved more centrally in the town end was because of him. I never actually found out who it is who does it though, but I have my suspicions. Is it a tall chap?

I don't think Brez was not at fault for the first, would have been a brilliant save if he'd pulled that off.  But what the hell was he playing at for the second?  Jesus Christ what a shite flippin punch.  As for OTJ's error for the third, my word we need some divine intervention to avoid the drop if we continue giving away goals like that.

I don't really blame him for the first one. Even if he had saved it that horrible little tramp Gillespie would have had the ball at his feet and 8 yards by 8ft worth of empty goal to aim at.

Notice how Cox is the one busting a gut to get back and close down their man for the first goal. If he gave the ball away in the first place, fair enough, but if not, where was our fucking midfield? Ambling back no doubt. Fucking shambles this lot. From a Colchester perspective I'd be annoyed with their goalie for conceding a soft second.

Jesus Christ what a shite flippin punch.

It was, but it has been coming. His shit punching has looked dodgy for a few games now. I'm no keeper, I don't know if he can catch them, but he has to do something else.

Their third was indeed a fluky goal, though clearly OTJ should have humped it up the field.

Cox's workrate is immense, but it's taking him into the wrong positions on the pitch!.

Just watched the highlights.

First thing I noticed was all 3 of Colchesters goals come down our right hand side and I dont think for any of the goals Robson-Kanu is even in the frame.

Really shit shit shit defending. How can you let Clive Platt stand inbetween the centre backs for the first one?

Second was was utter Gash by Brez, he wasnt even challenged and still couldnt catch the thing. Other keeper however would have been given the free kick for obstruction but not us.

Third one was a complete cock up by the Welsh lad. Bastard deflection but lets be honest if he didnt get deflected it would have gone straight at Brez and he would have punched it anyway!

What about the laughable attempted clearance by Morrison for the second?Blame Brez if you like but that was the real howler that led to the goal.

Whilst it was a crap clearance (Ifil would have at least got it into the stands) you expect a 6ft 7 goal keeper to be able to catch the ball.

Its as simple as that.

For one of the goals Cox comes steaming back to cover, points to the space behind him for Amankwaah to cover and then he doesn't cover it and they get the overlap.

As others have said where was the rest of the medfield?

Rather than blame individuals, it's quite clear it was a poor team 'effort' overall which did us.

It's been apparent for the past few games that Cox is getting back and doing a central midfielders job far too much. It shows he can read the game better than any of our other players.

It's great that he puts the effort in and never stops running, but it leaves Paynter isolated and we lose the ball too easily when it's pumped up top.

And Wilson said on the radio that if thats what Cox wants to do its fine by him.
With tactics like that we are fucking doomed.

Disagree, yes it was a mistake by Morrison, but putting the ball ten foot in the air, giving the keeper plenty of time to clean up, isn't exactly crime of the century.  OTJ's miskick was fair more costly, as it gave no one time to react.

More worryingly for me watching the "highlights" was the sight of some of our defenders ambling around and seemingly not giving a shit.
Only Greer seemed to be bothered by it all.

And if a 6ft3ins centre half cant kick a ball far enough to clear the area....well,its also as simple as that. What I'm saying is both players are equally culpable

Let's face it most of our players know there's no contract here for them next season, and are quite happy to see out the next 7 or 8 weeks before a long summer holiday. A number may start to panic around early July, when they realise they'll be joining the dole queue.

Their degree of interest has been in steady decline all season.
