Title: How mega, but unlikely is this?

I think it's a great idea, but can't help thinking it will never materialise for one reason or another.

Saw that the other day, it would be mega ace. Like you say though, I can't see it ever happening. This is Swindon we're talking about.

The Oasis was fairly revolutionary in its time.  If you were a kid in the 1980s, that wave machine had a reputation that spread well beyond Swindon.

Never say never.  If you think Swindon is always going to be mediocre, why live there?  I hope they go for this.

Oh i hope they do too... i live in hope that something decent will be done with the town because there is such potential

The great white!!

Used to go all the time with my sister when we were nippers. Loved the flumes and the wave machine. Used to be totally gutted when the time ran out! Pesky time!

Growing up and 25 miles from swindon, there were 5 things i knew about. The football team, speedway team, the magic roundabout, the wave machine at the oasis and the revolving bar at the Brunel. Seemed like a magical kingdom from a Newbury perspective!

You think?  So why can Reading, Bristol, Cardiff get the go-ahead for projects like this and Swindon can't?  I just don't understand it.

Wasn't aware of the Swindon West station plan.  Where (exactly) was that planned for?

Near Wooton bassett, Apparently there used to be a station out that way (REG??) it was mentioned a couple of years ago.

Because the councillors in those towns think big and have aspirations. Our council think Swindon is a village, are think as fuck and spend quite a bit of time suffocating growth and the future. I know there's lots of evidence contrary to this, but SBC are the biggest problem Swindon has in my eyes.

Not true I'm afraid ! Someone did fall through the dome once but landed in the deepest bit of the pool (lucky !) and could swim !(doubly lucky). He promptly let himself out and set the alarms off in the building and got caught by the Babylon soaking wet walking down Shepherd St(unlucky).  ;D

Did you used to work there? is it true you have to climb up the flumes every morning to check for razor blades in the slits?
Ive always wondered if that was true

Think you've been had there. Supermarkets do have to check all their breakfast cereals for razor baldes though.

Yes I did and sorry to shatter any illusions of mortal danger regarding razor blades but that's not why the flumes are checked ! They are checked every morning but for general wear and tear i.e.missing silicon between joints or any cracks in the flume itself. They have to walked up which is pretty interesting bearing in mind how slippery they are.

Surely they turn the water off?

Title: Re: How mega, but unlikely is this?
Post by: suttonred on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 13:54:58
Instead of walking up, why didn't the water get turned off and someone edge down in some rubber trousers or something,?

Title: Re: How mega, but unlikely is this?
Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 14:07:37
its sounds like fun to be honest - it can be hard to find fun in non flumed leisure centres!

Yes water is turned off but unbelievable amount of condensation in those things make it treacherous. We used to have boots (like ones used for jet skiing etc for grip plus rope with harness, not sure if they do now ? ) The fighting that may have ensued over the rubber trousers would have made that idea prohibitive !

Negative on both points. It was in reference to the title of the thread really and I am bored at work, training Injuns is soooooooo dull.

Yes and yes !

Ultra busy and great fun most of the time but also hard work. Had its soul destroying moments of boredom too ! Lots and lots of funny incidents involving staff and punters - some charachters from the sitcom Brittas weren't that far from reality !

ha ha ha ace - my boss's screen saver is the characters from the Brittas empire with the names changed to the people that work with us!

I always wanted to work at the Oasis so I could go in that little pod thing and say "all swimmers with Green lockers, Green lockers please leave the pool now!"

Did you have to tell people off for "heavy petting"? :D I want stories.

I have to tell this stupid teenage couple off for "petting" all the time - horrible pasty ginger girl with her ming spotty boyfriend - constantly chewing each others faces off in the pool - they try and hide under the rubber ring in the fun with floats session!

Sometimes 'petting' was too far off the mark ! More like penetrating in the case of a groupie with a heavy metal band that played the Oasis several years ago and decided to go for a swim before the show !
As for water testing its only done to check temperature, PH levels and chlorine levels so that anything that shouldn't be in there is dealt with by the chemicals ! Of course if someone unloads a giant log then that gets fished out with a net !
JFW, it was heavily rumored that one of my old bosses at the Oasis did some consultative work with the writer/writers of Brittas !
