Title: Lent
Post by: Sippo on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 17:38:48
Fuck me, on day 1, and didn't realise how difficult giving up dairy would be!! My bodies not liking having no coffee (Can't stand black coffee), can't have mash potato for tea....grrrr. Soup it is.

there are plenty of sustitutes, not many people know this but vitalite is dairy free, also soya milk is available, not the best taste in the world on its own, but when mixed into cooking or baking its fine

You can have mash if you want, just don't put any dairy in it. It'll be a bit dry though.

My first day of giving up not giving things up was really easy and I anticipate the next 39 days will be the same.

Soya milk curdles when you put it in coffee, unless you leave it out to get to room temperature. Plus, as you rightly point out, it's fucking horrible.

What about rice milk?

Title: Re: Lent
Post by: Simon Pieman on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 18:23:11
Riiiiiiiccccceeeee

That's actually better. Can't remember if it curdles. If I was really desperate I'd probably use coffeemate.

I dont think it does im sure i used to have it in tea

Tea is different though, soya milk doesn't go bad in that. Still tastes rank though :)

I started off trying to be helpful but now I think I'm creating more of an argument for Sippo to stop being a dairy free freak :D

And especially for no reason.

Lemon is very good in tea...Morrocan mint tea is also mega ace.

One of those things you can try and recreate here, but it doesn't taste the same as in the souk.

It's what Jesus would have wanted.

A bunch of fresh mint and fuckloads of sugar tastes pretty similar, if not exactly the same.

It might to your drug addled taste buds, but I've tried to recreate the taste in that sort of way and it's just not the same.....much like Guinness always tastes better in Ireland...pate always tastes better in France and lardy cakes always taste better in Wiltshire.

Now now, Reginald. We're only young once. Tea (English Breakfast, sometimes Earl Grey if I'm feeling a bit jazzy) is my only vice now.

All they do is bung a load of fresh mint and sugar in a teapot, and add hot water.

I find that if you get a tea strainer and pour the hot water over the mint a good few times, then the flavour really comes out. Once you have done that, let it soak for a few minutes and hey presto - lovely 'souk quality' mint tea.

Careful though, Moroccan men all have decaying mouths for a reason.

I successfully made it through January without beer, and now I plan to make it through Lent without eating rubbish.  Chocolate etc. off the menu until Easter.  Learn to live with a little hunger.  A frugal resolution for frugal times.

(Boring post, I know.  I'm only telling you lot so I force myself to stick to it.)

That's a shame - I was about to recommend a decent-ish dairy-free marg for you. Incidentally, are you just giving up using dairy products directly or things that include dairy ingredients (e.g. lactose)?

Title: Re: Lent
Post by: Sippo on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 09:35:39
Directly and including. If I found alternatives that would be too easy and miss the point.

I'm the least religious person you'd know, but I see this as a challenge.

Ah, bread and fish.  See, the New Testament imagery is showing through.  You say you're not religious, but sounds to me like you're trying to be just like Jesus.

Erm, no it doesn't. Some bread may do, but it's not an essential ingredient like, say, flour. We've got a brown and a white loaf in the kitchen atm - neither have got lactose in. And no, they're not fancy shmancy ones either, the white one's Hovis, the brown one's a Tesco Granary
