Title: Lent Post by: Sippo on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 17:38:48 Fuck me, on day 1, and didn't realise how difficult giving up dairy would be!! My bodies not liking having no coffee (Can't stand black coffee), can't have mash potato for tea....grrrr. Soup it is.
Title: Re: Lent Post by: axs on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 17:39:34 Fuck me, on day 1, and didn't realise how difficult giving up dairy would be!! My bodies not liking having no coffee (Can't stand black coffee), can't have mash potato for tea....grrrr. Soup it is. But not 'Cream of...'. Title: Re: Lent Post by: Chubbs on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 17:40:46 Fuck me, on day 1, and didn't realise how difficult giving up dairy would be!! My bodies not liking having no coffee (Can't stand black coffee), can't have mash potato for tea....grrrr. Soup it is. there are plenty of sustitutes, not many people know this but vitalite is dairy free, also soya milk is available, not the best taste in the world on its own, but when mixed into cooking or baking its fine Title: Re: Lent Post by: Samdy Gray on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 17:41:50 You can have mash if you want, just don't put any dairy in it. It'll be a bit dry though.
My first day of giving up not giving things up was really easy and I anticipate the next 39 days will be the same. Title: Re: Lent Post by: Simon Pieman on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 17:59:26 there are plenty of sustitutes, not many people know this but vitalite is dairy free, also soya milk is available, not the best taste in the world on its own, but when mixed into cooking or baking its fine Soya milk curdles when you put it in coffee, unless you leave it out to get to room temperature. Plus, as you rightly point out, it's fucking horrible. Title: Re: Lent Post by: Miss Angry on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 18:17:32 What about rice milk?
Title: Re: Lent Post by: Simon Pieman on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 18:23:11 Riiiiiiiccccceeeee
That's actually better. Can't remember if it curdles. If I was really desperate I'd probably use coffeemate. Title: Re: Lent Post by: Miss Angry on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 18:35:33 I dont think it does im sure i used to have it in tea
Title: Re: Lent Post by: Simon Pieman on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 18:40:27 Tea is different though, soya milk doesn't go bad in that. Still tastes rank though :)
I started off trying to be helpful but now I think I'm creating more of an argument for Sippo to stop being a dairy free freak :D Title: Re: Lent Post by: axs on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 18:44:50 And especially for no reason.
Title: Re: Lent Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 18:52:11 Lemon is very good in tea...Morrocan mint tea is also mega ace.
One of those things you can try and recreate here, but it doesn't taste the same as in the souk. Title: Re: Lent Post by: Simon Pieman on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 18:53:23 And especially for no reason. It's what Jesus would have wanted. Title: Re: Lent Post by: oxford_fan on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 19:17:20 Morrocan mint tea is also mega ace. One of those things you can try and recreate here, but it doesn't taste the same as in the souk. A bunch of fresh mint and fuckloads of sugar tastes pretty similar, if not exactly the same. Title: Re: Lent Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 19:22:59 A bunch of fresh mint and fuckloads of sugar tastes pretty similar, if not exactly the same. It might to your drug addled taste buds, but I've tried to recreate the taste in that sort of way and it's just not the same.....much like Guinness always tastes better in Ireland...pate always tastes better in France and lardy cakes always taste better in Wiltshire. Title: Re: Lent Post by: oxford_fan on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 20:14:36 Now now, Reginald. We're only young once. Tea (English Breakfast, sometimes Earl Grey if I'm feeling a bit jazzy) is my only vice now.
All they do is bung a load of fresh mint and sugar in a teapot, and add hot water. I find that if you get a tea strainer and pour the hot water over the mint a good few times, then the flavour really comes out. Once you have done that, let it soak for a few minutes and hey presto - lovely 'souk quality' mint tea. Careful though, Moroccan men all have decaying mouths for a reason. Title: Re: Lent Post by: JPC82 on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 22:36:20 Ive got a £1000 bet with a mate that I can give up sex for lent
Title: Re: Lent Post by: axs on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 22:45:51 Ive got a £1000 bet with a mate that I can give up sex for lent Does it include wanking? Title: Re: Lent Post by: JPC82 on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 22:48:22 No wanking allowed
Title: Re: Lent Post by: axs on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 22:49:53 Then it's a toughie. Literally.
Title: Re: Lent Post by: Sippo on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 08:19:32 Its not about finding a substitute. Its about giving it up comepletely.
Title: Re: Lent Post by: overthehill on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 08:32:49 Ive got a £1000 bet with a mate that I can give up sex for lent You must be very close to your mate. Title: Re: Lent Post by: Ardiles on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 09:04:57 I successfully made it through January without beer, and now I plan to make it through Lent without eating rubbish. Chocolate etc. off the menu until Easter. Learn to live with a little hunger. A frugal resolution for frugal times.
(Boring post, I know. I'm only telling you lot so I force myself to stick to it.) Title: Re: Lent Post by: pauld on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 09:15:52 Its not about finding a substitute. Its about giving it up comepletely. That's a shame - I was about to recommend a decent-ish dairy-free marg for you. Incidentally, are you just giving up using dairy products directly or things that include dairy ingredients (e.g. lactose)?Title: Re: Lent Post by: Sippo on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 09:35:39 Directly and including. If I found alternatives that would be too easy and miss the point.
I'm the least religious person you'd know, but I see this as a challenge. Title: Re: Lent Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:04:01 So are have you given up things like bread, biscuits & chocolate as well then as they all contain lactose?
Title: Re: Lent Post by: Sippo on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:09:31 Not bread no.
Title: Re: Lent Post by: jayohaitchenn on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:25:34 QUITTER!
Title: Re: Lent Post by: Sippo on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:37:06 Bread is a different kettle of fish really. That is taking past the extreme....
Title: Re: Lent Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:38:36 Its not about finding a substitute. Its about giving it up comepletely. but your not allowing yourself something that you havent given up, you said no dairy, all that we have said has no dairyTitle: Re: Lent Post by: Ardiles on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:47:27 Bread is a different kettle of fish really. That is taking past the extreme.... Ah, bread and fish. See, the New Testament imagery is showing through. You say you're not religious, but sounds to me like you're trying to be just like Jesus. Title: Re: Lent Post by: jayohaitchenn on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:57:14 Bread is a different kettle of fish really. That is taking past the extreme.... QUITTER! Title: Re: Lent Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 11:00:06 Bread is a different kettle of fish really. That is taking past the extreme.... Not really, it's got lactose in it. Title: Re: Lent Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 11:06:35 I used to go to a Catholic primary school so they used to MAKE us give stuff up for Lent - then we used to have to go to the church and look at those scary statue things about Jesus on the cross *shudder*

Title: Re: Lent Post by: pauld on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 11:17:51 Not really, it's got lactose in it. You failed. Erm, no it doesn't. Some bread may do, but it's not an essential ingredient like, say, flour. We've got a brown and a white loaf in the kitchen atm - neither have got lactose in. And no, they're not fancy shmancy ones either, the white one's Hovis, the brown one's a Tesco GranaryTitle: Re: Lent Post by: Sippo on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 11:18:12 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJN3PGqDRNg
