Title: Hartlepool Match Linesman
Post by: glos_robin on Monday, February 23, 2009, 10:30:46
Just found out one of my old mates from school is the lino for the Hartlepool game tomorrow, it's his first football league appointment so could be 'interesting'. Being ginger he's doomed from the start.....

The ref should make him wear a hat, womens flowery one would do, he'd probably get less stick if he makes a balls up.

Some years back I met a fella through work, who was a league lino. I asked him why he was a lino rather than a ref...his answer surprised me.

At the time it seemed when you started at grass roots, say refereeing for Wilts FA, then if you stayed with them all well and good but if you moved to a new area, say Yorkshire, then you had to start again, which held back your progress up the levels...so he decided he could get involved in league football at lino level, but had missed out on reffing, through having to move around with work.

I'm sure it must be a bit different now...that was in the last Century..20th not 19th.

I was having a chat with one of my old work mates last week who started reffing when he was a teenager, now a Championship level ref and doing well for himself.  He's only mid-20's so it looks like he'll be premiership at some time, fair play to the lad.

He once reffed one of our Wilts League matches about 10 years ago and you could tell he wasn't the normal standard of referee, very composed for such a young lad.

Be good to see him in charge of a televised match some day.

I often used to think of refs as people who wanted to be players but weren't good enough. Don't know how much truth is in that...

That's pretty much the reason I was intending to give it a go.

Fair enough. Its people who just want to be involved I guess.

It tends to be a job where you get quite a lot of criticism and not that much praise though doesn't it?

I used to be a pretty poor goalkeeper, I'm used to that bit!

All my sons qualified as level 8 refs aged 14 years, good rate of pay for a couple of hours work each weekend and they were able to request that abusive parents/adults, ( who on occasions ruined my sons enjoyment of junior football as players), leave the pitch side.

tom jones reffed my sunday league team a couple of times in the mid 90's.he was very good.
imagine mike riley, andy durso etc getting picked for teams at school?
i think they are prime exapmles of people who love the game but would more then likely be useless at it

Im with you on that.

To run around a muddy field on a sunday morning, in the middle of winter, getting abused by hungover gobshites is not my cup of tea. I can just come on here and get that   :bye:

Or be a League referee and run round a field on a Saturday afternoon being abused by thousands of still drunk gobshites.

I remember that, the FA had some sort of initiative to get ex players in as refs..I saw Jones do some games and thought he was distinctly average. Which is why perhaps he never got further with it.

I once saw a documentary about David Elleray....it was contrasting his life as a Harrow school master and top ref...most interesting was the fact that as a kid he used to be a fan of refs and didn't follow a team...he showed scrapbooks with stories in about refs. They're a strange breed.

That is proper strange. I remember at school shouting that i wanted to be the striker or the even the goalie but could never imagine saying..can i be the ref, can i be the ref???? Please sir, can i be the ref?

the lad I know was called Sam lewis and was the lino in front of the don rogers stand, he had a mare of a second half. I've sent him a message asking why he didn't have the bottle to at least try and point out to the ref it should be an indirect free kick if anything

it was pretty colourful but if I find out it was outside the box for sure then I'm gonna have a proper 'chat' as it becomes an almighty and costly fuck up by Sam.... not that it'll change anything but at least I might get to hear the refs explanation

to be fair the lino probably wasnt watching, and if its first appointment, the ref was probably just gona say "look im ref,ive made the decision i dont want to change it cos we'l both look like tits"

As I understand it, the ref was ex Prem. I say Ex because he was kicked off for being too arrogant. Your mate would have had no chance as a new asst't.

Which referee was Brentford boss Andy Scott talking about when he said after Saturday's 2-1 win v Rochdale:

Quote
For their penalty I didn't see what the referee had given it for - Ryan Dickson had his hands at his side.

refs never been in the prem, and the linos were both experienced, as was the fourth official.

The linesman only ever contradicts the ref when hes closer. If the ref is closer (as last night) the linesmand can't really go against what he says unless the ref obviously didn't see or something.

But it was a mental decision. Nobody including their players and fans thought it was a penalty. Im still pissed off about it.
