Saw that on the Beeb think it would be madness to sack the dour sack of scotch eggs.  I can't see anyone doing a better job there at the moment.

 

 Was talking to a mate who's an Argyle fan the other night....his opinion was that Sturrock had hit a glass ceiling.  Namely his old skool methods played well with lads looking to make a career, but less so with the kind of names you need to compete in the CCC.

 Which is why he's a canny operator in L1 and 2, but as yet not succeeded beyond that.

We were talking about this in the matchday thread. They (mostly) want him out over on the http://www.pasoti.co.uk/talk/ Argyle forums.

Some people are claiming his Parkinsons is preventing him doing a proper job. I doubt it is that but I don't know much about Parkinsons.

Anyway they say never go back, and so it looks true again.

Personally I don't feel that sorry for him from a football point of view.

It does seem he is a lower league specialist.  Basic organisation, bringing in people you know and trust who work hard far you.  I think he is part of the reason we are in the position we are now, not saying we would be if he was here, just that his way brought in a load of people suited to him and they've struggled outside of that set-up.

I do agree with the comments that he’s definitely one works well with journeymen and lower league chancers but in his defence that’s really all he has to work with at Plymouth and probably all he ever will have while he remains there.

The Muff are a good example of well oiled and organised League One team having their season in the sun.  This season only Blackpool have a smaller average attendance, which could be argued that’s only due to the state of their stadium.  Financially they’re tidy enough but not in the same league as a lot of the other clubs surrounding them plus when it comes to bringing in players geographically they’re fucked.  Sturrock has been mumbling about it for years as was successor Holloway.  Players just don’t want to move all the way out to the wilderness of Ginster country.

They’re far from in the shit anyway.  They have a game in hand on a lot of sides above them and three points off the drop with a lot of other sides coasting around the same points tally.  Couple of wins and they’re nesting in mid-table and talking playoffs again.  In fact rewind to the start of the season they were in a similar position then and he turned them round on a cracking streak.

The squad definitely needs a shake up and old Mpenza has been a let down and I thought he’d be a revelation for them but he keeps pulling up with hamstring problems.

When I moved to Plymouth Argyle, it was there first season after promotion. They were getting 18000+ going to games, everyone was wearing the merchandise. This remained up until the later months before moving to the North East.

Then they became a mediocre Championship team, people stopped going and went back to supporting their beloved Liverpool because winning the Champions League rekindled old feelings.

They gave it ago, but without success people have an excuse for not going, it's the same everywhere.

Williamson, Pulis and Holloway all tried to replicate Sturrock

Williamson - Was a like-for-like appointment that failed.
Pulis - Boring but steady football but ditched them when Stoke came a-calling.
Holloway - Promised the world then broke all of their hearts so-to-speak.

Sturrock has brought in some mediocre players in his second spell mixed in with the egotistical like Jermaine Easter and Simon Walton - a player they vowed never to field again because of his attitude but was back in the first team a matter of months later due to their dire situation.

They love Jamie Mackie but he's not Championship quality while their strikeforce of Rory Fallon and whoever they can find isn't working. Émile Mpenza has been the injury-prone flop he was expected to be.

Going up the divisions they had good working players like Connolly, Coughlan, Aljofree, Gilbert, Norris, Friio, Adams (when fit), Wotton, Hodges et al. Now it's a combination of mediocre Scottish Premier players, Premiership loans and random foreigners. Which will work in the 3rd tier, but you need far much more quality in the 2nd.

Yup, I'm one of those annoying non-fans who pretend to know alot about their football club but it's really not hard to understand why Argyle are losing at the moment.

Oops, lets go with both... I moved to Argyle in 2004 - was injured throughout, scored for fun in the reserves but was released by Ian Holloway because I didn't laugh at his jokes. Go figure.

See old mumbles is doing alright again.  Picked up 6 points in the past week and pulled the pastie munchers out of the mire.

Still down to loan players mind which highlights the problems he has with that squad and getting new faces in.

Personally I wish we'd have sorted the takeover a few weeks earlier so he may have decided to stay.  Think we lost the professionalism when he and his backroom staff left.  Think he'd have been a good manager for Fitton to have inherited.
