Reading Wilsons comments about approaching the game to get something out of it, I fear we are playing with only one up front (Cox), so five across the middle then.

I too have a feeling we might get battered today.

I sincerely hope not.

3-1 to Leicester

Title: Re: Leicester City vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: pumbaa on Saturday, February 14, 2009, 12:43:44
This is likely to be one of those games where we get battered and capitulate to a 5-0 or something. Equally, we could put in a sterling battling rearguard defensive performance and come away with a valuable point. The point is, we just don't know what team will turn up.

I'm sticking (optimistically) to my 0-0 prediction.

We need some points on the board out of the next three games (Leicester, Millwall and Scunny) - that's a tough ask.

Because we're not very good and have prima donna's in the team that only try in big games?

If that's true, the players are not too bright.  If they want to be spotted, scouts are more likely to turn up if we're near the top of the table.

Don't want to be moaning now though.  Despite the late disappointment, we did well today.  Under Malpas, we would have been hammered today.  We're far from safe, but we're doing OK.  Well done lads.

I don't think that the Prima Donna thing is true.

The same squad (More or less) did OK under Sturrock, fell apart under MM and are now doing better under DW.

I wonder where we will be in the league now if DW was in charge at the start of the season.

And the Lesster commentators are saying that we deserved our draw.

From the official site's match report....

"The Robins played out a classic counterattacking performance on their first ever visit to the Walkers Stadium with Peter Brezovan and the defence playing their full part in gaining a point. which means that Swindon have drawn both league games against the Foxes this season.

Swindon Town boss Danny Wilson recalled Jack Smith and Michael Timlin to the starting line-up for The Robins' first ever trip to The Walkers Stadium.

Town's first ever visit to City's new home saw Kevin Amankwaah pushed up to right midfield with Smith at right-back."

That's paragraphs 2,3 and 4.

Any idea how many times Swindon have played at the Walkers Stadium?

There are encouraging signs...but the scale of the task is shown by the fact we're now a point better off than in 05/06 after the same number of games...then we took 10 from the next 4, to make it look like we would escape, but of course didn't.

We still don't win games....6 in 28, we're going to need probably 7 from 18, so  need to improve.

To be fair Reg to do that we need to fucking play some. We've only had two games in a month both away at sides in the top 6, both of which we've taken points from. I'll settle for drawing every away game from now until the end of the season and hoping we can pick up wins at home.

Just got back, good match!  We didn't sit and defend, we actually went and had a go, which is pleasing!  The defence looks much more solid now with players putting their bodies on the line for a change.  Wanky had a good game on the right, as did Jack Smith at RB, and Greer and Ifil looked a solid partnership in the middle.  Timlin was poor 1st half and slightly better 2nd.  Kanu was hot and cold.  I thought Paynter didn't have his best game, seemed lethargic but I thought Cox ran his bollocks off for the team today.  Brez looks like he is getting back to his best as well, though he still needs to dominate his 6 yard box more.

The Stadium was very impressive, but the home fans were a joke!  Quiet as fook until they scored in the 88th minute!  They do not deserve a stadium like that!

Well done to the town fans today!  Taught the city fans a lesson in how to support your team!  Disapointing we didn't hold on for all 3 but happy with the 1.  Would defo had taken that this morning, so I came away a happy man!

As somebody has already said, going on that performance, we have no worries as far as relegation goes this season!  Just need a run of consistency now!

This of course is an issue...it can be difficult to see in advance, when it might be good or bad to catch a side....namely do they have fitness/suspension problems, is it better to be playing sides sat clear at the top or desperately scraping at the foot of the table.

In all my years of following STFC, we've tended to be fairly hopeless at staving off relegation when in a scrap...I can think of maybe 5 examples of success, let's hope this is a 6th.

OK, we played very well today against a side walking away with the league. They were always going to get chances, and despite them hitting the bar and the post we were well worth our point, if not all three. As a defensive unit we were solid today and going forward, both Cox and Paynter put a good shift in. The only problem I can see is the number of games we have in a short period of time and fitness will play a key role in the coming fixtures. Luckily though our run-in is where it'll be decided if we stay up or not. And I think we'll have a good run in that period anyway.

Brez - didn't have too much to do. little bit iffy on coming for the odd ball, and his kicking wasn't great as we know but there wasn't much he could do for the goal.

Vincent - Solid game, made a good clearance off the line in the 1st half that was past Brez.

Ifil - Again had a good game, got stuck into both Howard and Fryatt and looked to be alot more assured with Greer next to him. Nothing I can remember that he did wrong.

Greer -Sign him up. Like Wilson said when he bought him in he's captain material. Although Ifil is at the min, he talks to the whole defence (along with Vincent) and organises the unit. This was the first time i've seen him but he seemed to make a lot of difference at the back, his awareness and positioning at the back was very good.

Smith - With Amankwaah ahead of him they dealt with Dyer well, again I can't think of anything he did wrong which in this sort of game against the runaway leaders speaks well for the defence.

Robson-Kanu - Didn't have an amazing game by all means but he did well. If he had a right foot we would have won the game, but its all ifs and buts. Looked useful in the final 20mins when they chased a little more, whilst before that he didn't really get going not to say he didn't play well.

Kanyuka - Battled in the middle and did well, some mislaid passes but thats to be expected from a centre half. Won plenty of balls - something we've missed and personally he played better than Timlin in there too.

Timlin - Like I said i think Kanyuka had a better game in the middle, the game seemed to pass him by a little. Despite that it wasn't that bad a performance, I just think we was a little overrun in there by Oakley - which isn't too surprising. Some decent touches and at the end of the day we got a point so can't complain.

Amankwaah - Doubled up on Dyer well with Smith, and got forward well. Being a strong lad he kept the ball and put himself about a bit. Was a good move by Wilson to put him on the right side. Had a good game, like all of the lads.

Paynter - Won some good headers against Hobbs, didn't get penalised that much for being fouled like he usually does which was a surprise. Didn't have any chances of note but he did well up with Coxy and held the ball up like he usually does.

Coxy - Good goal, could/should have had another either a volley or taking a shot when he tried to square it in the 6 yard box. Like someone said worked his bollocks off for the team and he compared to Fryatt he looked a better player.

All in all a good performance, everyone gave 100% including the fans who were fantastic today. Shame Leicester have fans that don't deserve that stadium as they were poor as fuck, and they perhaps disappointed me more than us not taking all 3 points.

not got much to say

on another day that could have finished 4-4

everyone played well and put in alot of effort.

our support was really good and I wish it was like that every week.

We've sacrificed a bit of creativity in midfield for a physical presence, and we bloody needed to!

And OK Leicester had a bit more about them in the passing, but we were better in every other department for me. It was a superb effort with Cox my man of the match edging out Smith.

Forget the possession stats, etc. We had the most chances, and we had the clear cut ones too. Shame Kanu-Robson can't shoot really. Doubley so as I had £2 on Cox scoring first and a 2-1 town win (125-1).

Never really stood up for Paynter before be I thought he did OK today. Set Cox goal up well.

It was an excellent performance and shows we don't need to fear anyone. Yet what Reg alludes to is right, we need to start winning. But I am for more confident that the Iffy year though.

Oh and PML @ Leicester fans singing "your support is fucking shit" after 5 minutes, followed by 85 minutes of silence from them.

Would agree with that  - Amankwah on the right of midfield was a very shrewd move by Wilson. Felt like we could've snatched it but on reflection that would've been harsh on Leicester.

Very pleased :) .

I was there & would echo everything that has been said.  Whilst queueing for a ticket a Leicester fan gave me one for £12.50 in the main stand - only problem (if problem it was) I was surrounded by the home fans although there was a very attractive mature woman & her babe of a daughter sat in front of me.  As has been remarked on, you Town fans were amazing!  The noise throughout the game was very audible from where I was sitting & you must have lifted the team with that support.
Regarding the formation another masterstroke from Danny W.  When I saw the side I inwardly groaned as I envisaged another backs to the wall display with no attack of note.  How wrong I was.  The inclusion of Kanyuka & Amankawaah disrupted the Leicester midfield, they had no time to pass & often their intended target was under pressure from another red shirted defender.  The result was that they played the ball back to defence as much as forward & frequently it was knocked up in the air making it easy meat for the Town defence. Leicester had very little creativity although Oakley worked hard.  Dyer disappointed although Fryatt looked dangerous.  First half we were well in contention with Cox a constant threat.  First time I've seen Greer & he looked a very good player. Ifill & Vincent looked very competent & composed on the ball. Brezovan made one sensational save late on tipping the ball over the bar whilst diving backwards.  All in all a good point and whilst we were under pressure for long stretches we were very good value for that point. A very pleasing display with a defence that was authoritative & disciplined. Surely if we continue to play with this kind of measured football we'll pull clear?

Enjoyed the game today, and for an away side at the wrong end of the league we should have won this game, we had so many half chances, especially in the first 25 minutes of the second half, on another day we would have scored and a second goal would certainly have seen them off.
Leicesters movement around the penalty area in the first half was brilliant, looked like they were trying to score the perfect Arsenal goal for the most of the time. In the last twenty minutes they started to pump long balls down the middle and I must admit I thought we would hold on.

As far as home support goes they were appalling, just wonder what they must be like if there side were on a losing run. Swindon fans sung there hearts out, but I will say, there was a certain eliminate in our crowd who do us no favours, two guys near me were so pissed they couldn't even sit down let alone sing, what is the point of travelling that far and getting so fucking pissed that you will not even remember todays game.

I didn't say he had his worst game tho!

I wouldn't say he was crap, just looked tired and didn't chase down balls that he usually would.  Agree he did well holding the ball up and creating the goal for Cox, but did not look a threat and did not hassle the City defence like he has been doing recently!

That is all!

I thought Paynter was excellent, Berniman is right in the fact he didnt really trouble the defense and never looked like scoring but thats probably the best his link up play has been in a while.

He won alot more headers than he usually does to, his role wasnt to trouble the defence his role was to flick it on and let Cox trouble the defence, which worked perfectly

Only negative is that when he's held the ball up or won the flick on he is very slow at getting into the box afterwards

Or you could say lethargic!  Which, i believe was my point in the first place!

Look, I didn't say that Billy had a bad game, I said that he didn't have his best game, and what I meant by that was purely his energy!  He seemed less energetic than he usually is.

I do realise that we were away from home against top of the table, but I was more commenting on his general pace and ability to recover and shut down when required, which didn't seem as good as recent weeks.

Oh, and your jumper was wicked DV, along with your beard!  I thought you had ditched the Jesus look?

 ;D

Jesus is on his way back.

I wouldnt say it was lethargic because he tried to get there he just isnt quick enough. I thought he actually chased alot to be honest with you but he looked fucked towards the end but then so did Cox and a few other players

I'm going to put it down to lack of games.

Game's been summed up quite well by everybody,no dissagreements amongst TEF as far as i can see, which is always good to see. only problems i have about the game are timlins uselessness until the last quarter of an hour, kanu's on and off every 5 minutes but showed he can move the ball around at his feet and leave the defence static, amankwaah on the wing was dangerous, payed off in the end,but at times i felt that he could have played the ball a little bit quicker to release the front two for a better chance, but thats due to a lack of experience on the wing. and the final thing to pick up on is the lack of substitions. yes we were playing as a solid unit, but we used 6 defenders for 90 minutes, and with games being so close together youd have to think that it'l take its toll if they are not given a rest.

on the paynter front,he won 100% more headers today than ive seen him win this season, dropped back well to provide the link for cox,but was a little lethargic to say the least, especially during the end when cox was understandably knackered after running himself to the ground.

GREAT FANS & GREAT POINT!!

I believe that song was started by Mr. Don Rogers Shop as well.

It was nice to finally get a Simon Cox song.

I was trying to fit David Ellery into the Celery song but couldnt quite get it to work.

I wish our support, both home and away was that good every week.

Surely if we continue to play with this kind of measured football we'll pull clear?
that is spot on, what i thought but too pissed to write!

They had calls and texts and their fans didnt seem like complete retards like ours do (well the majority of those who text in) even Nigel Pearson had some good things to say about us and his Ex-Wednesday team mate Danny Wilson.

Today was fantastic. I can't complain about the performanc of a single player. We defended as a unit, the midfield didn't fall to pieces, and we caused a few problems for the dfence at the top of the league. Cox had a great game, as did Jack Smith. Brezovan didn't put a foot wrong either apart from one (or maybe two) misplaced kicks.

Wilson got the tactics spot on today, and although people have mentioned his lack of substitutions I really don't see how any changes would have been beneficial.

As for the fans, we totally outsung a pathetic set of home supporters and today was one of those days I was proud to be a Town fan. Even spending an hour behind a (presumably) pissed up and incredibly dangerous driver on he A429 coming home hasn't dampened my spirits!!!

Comment from a poster on the Leicester forum today:

I think the fact we had no time on the ball means Swindon must get credit. I was impressed with them, they worked hard and must have been gutted when we equalised. But then again, we were gutted when they equalised back in November.

Yeah, you missed me out. Cunt.

Would agree with most of what was posted on here. Great game, we played some great stuff, always looked dangerous on the break, could have ended 3-1 to either side, so happy to take the point. And our fans were immense, certainly put the home fans to shame, never heard home fans so quiet when their teams doing so well. Thoroughly enjoyed it and came away feeling one of those games you're proud to be a Town fan.

I think our fans were just fantastic yesterday. Very Loud and hardly stopped singing all game. Wonder what Leicester fans thought of us.

The police situation is a shambles. stopped us all at the services told us to be back at the coach for 2, then the old bill decided to escort everyone to the ground when they just sat down to eat very very bizarre. You would think we were Millwall.

The game itself was very good. We stuck in there and took some chance. I believe Greer will be the difference between staying up and going down and we must do all we can to keep him. Him and Vincent together have brought a lot into the team. Ifil looked very confident again as well.

Cox was unlucky not to score a couple of times. I didnt think Leicester were all that great however some great passing between them but we managed to shut them down.

I had a wonder down to where the Old Filbert Street Ground was to see what remains. Photos are below. as you expect not much but still managed to get through the walls there that had been left open to go on what was the pitch and have a look around.

CHANT OF THE DAY

Swindon Lads "Top of the league, you've got no lads".... etc

Leicester fans reply "We're just too scared of you".... etc

This is going to sound really gay.

But I was so proud comming away from the ground today. Every player worked their socks off, and I would have felt the same even if we had lost. Great work ethic, team spirit, bit of endeavour, we werent scared of them.

But we DEMAND this every game. We pay a lot of money to watch this football and the players have to try their best every time they play in front of paying customers. They have to or they have to go.

Great effort yesterday. Well done lads, you made us proud again.

Just managed to get online.....Missus decided to paint the lounge whilst i was at Leicester.....unplugged the phone and wireless link unscrewed the shelves, painted the walls and reattatched the shelves covering the LAN plug thingy.

What a day!
Parked in the Leicester City car park whilst the boys spilled out to get tickets.
whizzed over to the Rugby ground for £3.
Into the Counting house boozer and into the ground.
Liked the ground......no surprise that the fans were cunts, especially 'Pepsi and Shirley' what pair of twats....did they see any of the game?
The lads were brilliant and i suppose a draw was about right but i really thought we would snatch it at the death.
When they hit the post i thought it was going to be our day!
Only Timlin for me looked out of sorts and i was surprised that he wasnt replaced by McNamee at the end so we could ping balls into the corner but i suppose it was so finely balanced for Wilson to call.
Back to Calne just before 8............
Off to Milwall on Tuesday night.....and i cant wait.

Thought it was a bit strange when the leicester fans celebrated our goal and then seemed to try to take the piss that we were going mental.  Then when they scored they went mental!  Very strange people come form Leicester that's for sure!

Oh, and I got free parking right next to the ground next to the gas works, on the main road, turn right out of the ground and then first right!  Security and everything, I asked how much and he said it's free mate!  I did wonder if I would see my car again, but it was safe and sound after the match. A lot of Leicester were parking there so maybe it was a locals thing!  That made up for the plastic burger that I then paid £3.20 for!

Some comments from Leicester confined to one post.....

Quote
A fair result today, we didn't do enough to win it. I was quite impressed with Simon Cox, very pacey.

Quote
Swindon had done their homework and frustrated us.

Quote
They looked a better side than their position suggests - gave us very little time on the ball

Quote
Swindon played well and few players stood out for them.

Quote
Oh and cox - twat.
 :D

Quote
They came with a game plan, raised their effort and played out of their skins.

Quote
What I'm trying to say is, on paper we should have stuffed a team near the bottom, but against a forward 2 who were outstanding today, we showed a lot of fight and character to come back from a goal down and get a point

Quote
Fryatt was closely marked but even so, seemed a little slow today. He would be so much better if he had pace like Cox.

Quote
The Swindon defense was to tall and physically strong.
(tee hee)

Quote
I was surprised at the attacking intent shown by Swindon, thought they might have put up the shutter

Quote
Yesterday against Swindon Cox was excellent and my MOTM, as his goal was just reward for Swindons good tactics.

Quote
You've got to give credit to the opposition. As you say, Cox was exceptional for them

Quote
Teams have learned how to play against us. On Saturday Swindon packed the midfield, pressed really hard and hit us on the break - very effective.

Quote
What we needed today was more quality possession to wear Swindon down faster. If we'd had them chasing shadows for 45 minutes they would have been there for the taking in the second half, but credit to them for their efforts, which duly earned them a point, and a reminder to us that the passing and movement has got to be sharper.

Thats what I was thinking.  I scoured around and didnt just pick out the good bits but there were no posts critiscising the way we played which surprised me!  Few saying they should be getting more from "small" clubs like us but doesn't change the fact we played well and it was noticeable.  Seen a few quotes theyve pinched from here too surrounding their poor home support! :D  They also appear to agree they are pretty shit too!

The so-called highlights dont show us in a particularly attacking light!

indeed they're a bit odd.....walking out of the ground, this leicester fan was giving it 1 nil and you fucked it up (in that horrible accent of theirs) and literally 30 secs later, I saw the same bloke giving town fans directions to the train station in his 'tim nice but dim' voice....PMSL

I don't think Town fans are in any position to take the piss out of other regional accents!!

They showed our goal, that was it. There were definately a few other chances worthy of making the highlights.

Kanu-Robson chances x 2
Cox cross to Paynter (well defended)
Cox had another shot on goal, and that fluffed pass near the end.
etc.
etc.
