Title: Surround sound query
Post by: tans on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, 11:28:56
As you know i have my PS3 and surround sound system it only has one optical in. If i get one of these;

http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/SW001.html (http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/SW001.html)

Will i be able to connect the PS3 via optical, and my TV via optical and get them both working through the surround sound?

Hope that makes sense?

Thankyou

Yes - but not both at the same time if that's what you mean.

Does your surround sound only have optical in, or does it have phono as well?

Yes.

What you can do is connect your PS3 to the TV with HDMI (which I'm guessing you've done already) and then using the other lead, connect the red and white phono plugs to the amp/surround sound system. On the PS3 you can change the settings so that audio goes through the phono lead and visual goes through HDMI.

Thay way you can connect your TV to the surround sound using optical and won't have to buy a switch.

But then you only get dolby pro logic surround sound from the PS3 and not 5.1 DD/DTS.

Unless this is acceptable, in which case it's all good.

True, but if he had a system capable of 5.1 DD/DTS then you'd think he'd have a decent AV amp that could take HDMI.

I agree, but what insane manufacturer would offer an optical in but only support DPL sound?

Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense!

Your amp's got HDMI, so plug the PS3 into the amp with HDMI and then another HDMI from the amp to the TV.

And I take it when you say you want to get your TV hooked up to surround sound, you mean your Sky box (or similar)? If so, then plug that directly to the amp too (by phono) - saves your TV having to do any sound processing then.

it only has one HDMI slot

In that case scrap that then.

Throw it in the skip and go and buy something decent

Doesn't look like your amp supports 5.1 DTS anyway, so my original suggestion seems the best idea.

Supports Dolby Digital on optical but not DTS. One presumes this covers both 2.0 and 5.1 DD, so I guess there is a limited value in connecting via optical (for Dolby Digital Blueray movies and games).

Anyway short answer, yes that switch box will work.

Long answer, you can try Sams suggestion for free and if not happy then buy the switcher!

You're right - Endor is a forest moon, not a planet.

Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense.
