Title: BBC Radio Swindon does the Danny Wilson phone-in...
Post by: Ed Hadwin on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 20:52:31
Apologies for the shameless plug, but as it's all been a bit short notice I just wanted to make sure people knew about this.

Danny Wilson is coming into the studio Thursday evening at 6 to do an hour long phone in with me. It's live on all our Swindon/Wiltshire frequencies and on the listen live bit of the website.

Anyway, any questions you want to ask him, this is your chance. I'm not sure we'll get time for Manatee related news, but you never know.

You can mail them now to [email protected] otherwise ring 01793 513366 or text 07786 203303 after 6 on Thursday.

I don't get much/any chance to log in on the forum most of the time sadly, but if there's anything you ever do want to ask me drop me a mail at the above address and I promise I will get back to you .. eventually.

Cheers.

I'm thinking of investing in a farm.

How many Manatees do you think I'll get in my Bath?

Interesting that, at the time of writing, Ed has not written a similar message on the Evening Advertiser website.

I put it to you that STFC's two premier media outlets do not get on, ala KP/Peter Moores.

And my question would be to enquire as to whether Danny Wilson minds being called Dan, or Daniel.

I'd give manatee milk a go fB....as regards the bath questione, my Czech lady friend always has carp for Christmas dinner...the carp is kept fresh and alive in the bath awaiting the big day.  So 1 bath = 1 carp therefore 1 bath = 0 manatee.

It is. My favourite episode of TNG is when Geordi gets in trouble when the bird he's been wanking over in the holosuite comes to visit the enterprise. Classic.

I thought it was going to be something ace, but I looked it up and it's a disabled fan.

LeVar Burton went on to direct loads of episodes of the various star treks.

i'm going to stick my neck out here and say that i've enjoyed all the star trek films, most of the series' but the next generation films were not upto scratch.

there's something bad about enterprise and voyager also, i think it's because they're new and they've put effort into them...

Title: Re: BBC Radio Swindon does the Danny Wilson phone-in...
Post by: flammableBen on Thursday, January 8, 2009, 08:19:43
Not sure about enterprise (although I did get bored after a few episodes when it was first on), but voyager is just fucking terrible. I tried watching through fairly recently. Got stuck at about season 4. Couldn't take anymore.

Captain Janeway, Harry Kim, fucking half klingon lady, silly pilot man. All so fucking annoying. Tuvok is alright, but episodes about him are pretty rare, Doctor episodes tend to be a highlight, and some of the sevon of nine stuff isn't too bad; although the increase ratings with new bigtitty mctightsuit ploy is a bit thin.

DS9 shits on voyagers face, and there was a pretty big overlap on when they were being aired.

Genius.

As for star trek and star wars- both geek films. No film should ever be set in space, apart from flight of the navigator!

On the phone in side, its being shown on the big screen aswell if anyones interested?

I loved the original series as a kid, but didn't really like the films that spun out of it. I think they fell  into the trap of trying of allowing the stars too much control and sadly Shatner in particular had more ego than talent.

Looking back now at the original shows in comparison with TNG they look a bit lame and Shatner's acting kind of clunks around the set like a big wooden thing.

Next Gen is definately my favourite ST series, with DS9 a fairly close second

I actually might send this in .

Danny, when you see the words "Franchise" on your CV it looks like a someone has used it to wipe their behind.  However when on inspection you see that you managed to get them relegated to the bottom division of the football league it begs the question

Do you consider that to be your finest achievement in football so far? and following on from that

Were you upset at not being given the opportunity to finish the job off and take them where they belong, to the lower reaches of non league football?

Good one.

And to expand on that, there are rumours that he left (sacked/left) the Monkey Hangers (?) because he felt that the board would not support his own ambitions.

And so what ambitions does he have for Swindon, and why does he feel that he has the support of the board to take us there?

I am dissappointed

I tried, but the chap who answered the phone said that it sounded as though I was flying in a micro-light. Considering that I am on the other side of the the there is nowt that i can do about that, and so (At least) one of you numpties could have tried instead. But no.......... you should be ashamed of yourselvesl. We did not find out what his fave cheese is.

Anyway, I think that DW gave a pretty good interview and now I know what voice I should use whilst playing FM2009;

Goodight innit.

Loving the Yorkshire accent.

Yorkshire??? Dear oh dear, Yorkshire????  It's a Lancastrian accent!!!!

Oh and the phone in was a bore.  Did he answer a question straight once?  No I don't think so.  Seems like DW will keep his cards close to his chest, as the Hartlepool fans said.  Not a terrible thing as perhaps he'll get some things done, but a backwards step in contrast to Paul Sturrock, who seemed pretty keen on the manager/fan relationship.

Don't get me wrong Sussex he said nothing wrong, but I just didn't hear anything to think "brillliant, I see this bloke making his mark and taking us forward".

I remember when Sturrock came here, he said Dennis Wise had called telling him the first name on his team sheet was Monkhouse (I think it was AM), and PS said, "well he isn't the first name on mine" and impied that was the phone call over.  He came in made his mark, changed the backroom staff etc.  MM and DW to a certain extent haven't done that, they've come in all nice and politely and not stood up and said, right this is the way we do things.

DW in the interview on one hand was saying how he's relying upon DB and AW on player assessments etc and yet when he was asked whether he's changed training much (a fair enough question) he answered "I don't know, as I'm not sure what training consisted of before I arrived here".  Why hasn't he asked DB and AW what's been going on for the last few months?  And if he has why not just tell us if he's changed things?  we don't need to know the detail but hearing that he's come in and started to do things differently would have been nice.

I think he is saying all the right things to get the confidence back on the team. If we don't get that back soon then we will go down.

We don't have the resources for a complete clean sweep of the team and that would certainly be a stupid thing to in January anyway. Post-season is the time for more radical changes.

He is pretty much saying everything that Malpas did except when Wilson says it it sounds like he believes it. The phone is was pretty boring to be honest and rabitted on for about 10 minutes after every phone call, email, text etc saying "well lets see what happens, we need a bit of self belief and if the players we want are available we will definately be interested" fair play he didnt commit to anything. I am happy DW is here but sort of like Jan Age, Can't say he got me excited or anything but I DO hope he does a good job.

I don't expect, or want, to be excited by the manager talking on a radio show.

Nor do I want to be 'entertained' by a manager.

All I want is for the manager to get results. If he does, he can be as boring as he wants!

The "excitement" was related to what Wilson said during the phone in, he wants to entertain the crowd, he wants to see smiles on the faces of the fans, he wants enjoyment all round.  I was just saying that on the back of that the footie needs to be a lot more riveting that the phone in.

As I've said before I don't agree with the don't want entertainment just want three points mind set but understand why some people do.

See what you're saying Jan and of course I'd like to be entertained by attractive football, but if it's a choice between that or three points, I'd go for three points. (Although both would be the ideal!)

I'm not really one for cheese, but I did get to visit the farm where Yarg is made once.  Or rather, was made, as my Cornish dairy sources tell me that production has since been moved to a shiny, new fangled place.  Anyway, on a different trip, I preferred the Guinness brewery.

We also went to see the Eden Project, the beach and a completely ruined castle.  No wonder they're skint in Cornwall if they can't be arsed to look after stuff.

That was a question in 90minutes magazine when we played QPR away in the cup.

Would you prefer attractive football or the right result?

I was in there and i was 15. Funny how that triggered a lost memory.

Obviously i said the result, everyone would, wouldnt they?

He didnt give much away did Danny but he has only been here 5 minutes and has seen one match.

He is keeping his cards close to chest and I expect its different coming into manage a team in the bottom 5 than it is taking over a top of league team like Sturrock did.

Im certainly not going to judge him on a radio interview after being here a few weeks. I hope the mongs dont either.

He was always going to give stock answers wasn't he? I don't think he'd come out and slate everyone in sight, it's counter productive.

I can see where Jan is coming from, he seems a safe pair of hands rather than spectacular.

That'll do me really, my expectations are a successful fight against relegation, then a slow build over the next season or two before becoming playoff challengers. If he exceeds those expectations then great.

Sturrock hardly set the world alight with scintilating football did he. He couldn't get his teams to play against the "lesser" teams, remember the defeats against Macclesfield, Barnet, Mansfield etc
Good luck to Dannyboy, and lets have some entertainment at last.

No one's said Sturrock was that great it's just that during his time here he was pretty open with his thoughts, which was a refreshing change - for example his thoughts on Ricky Shakes was pretty obvious from some of his post match and fans forum talks.  Wilson is a lot more guarded.  That's it, no big issue.

Ha ha ha!!!!!  Good one YR.

Sturrock should have been a massive frozen leg of lamb for STFC, it was only because the club couldn't afford the electricity bill that they had to make him a pasty.  I'm sure that if AF had arrived just a month earlier he'd still be here today defrosting away.

DW came accross as trying to be upbeat and positive,i don't think he was ever going to start
saying that players X,Y and Z had to go,but he did hint that some players won't like decisions
he makes.Sturrock used to emphasise how he went by "First impressions" Shakes and Fola obvious
choices then.Take your pick now Danny.....

The phone-in never really had any momentum, because of the 2 news bulletins,2 traffic and weather
reports.

I've listened to it and I wasn't disappointed by Danny Wilson or his comments. They were just as generic as what I've heard Sturrock and Malpas talk about previously on the wireless.

I'd like to hear Wilson on the radio in a month or so because then signings will have come in (hopefully) and games have been played (hopefully) and it will be well and truly his set-up getting the results.

Is it true Danny Wilson still lives in Barnsely? He used to get a lot of stick at Bristol City and Hartlepool for living away from the club

Interview went as expected, D.W. knows what needs to be done, and has the disclaimer that it needs to be done as quickly as possible.

Getting rid of the background staff would immediately mean more work when there is too much to do in the next few weeks already.

An uninteresting interview, but I would had been concerned if it had been any different.
