Call me a cynic and without thinking about it that much it seems to me that Derby are really scraping the barrell with this appointment.

Is this a good move or are they appointing the son of a man who brought success to Derby County? Nige is obviously a Forest favourite too.

Me too, Mainly for the fact that the Forest or Burton jobs were pretty much always going to be there for Nigel to take over at some stage. I would say Nigel should have maybe went to a L1 side first to get a bit more experience. Maybe a heart over head appointment to get one up on Forest.

The Derby/Forest cup match will have a bit extra spice now.

Exactly, 10 years of hard work and just when it looked like promotion was near - he leaves! I wonder who will take the Burton job now because they are in a good position but need to be sensible in their next appointment.

John Ward will be the obvious name banded about.

I think they'll need a been there/done that at Conference level to ensure the job is done. Alot of people will want that job.

Paul Fairclough has just left Barnet hasn't he? He certainly fits into the been there seen it done it got the t-shirt/book/limited edition DVD category at that level.

I mean in relation to the Burton job.

I think Fairclough is staying at Barnet in a different role.

Jimmy Quinn is a good shout for a potential replacement at Burton.

I guess it works for him as he gets lots of credit for doing a good job at Burton without the risk of actually having to manage them in the League. Perhaps he thinks that they don't have the backing to do much when they do get up and this way he looks better. Either that or he just really wanted the Forest job.

Fairclough is England C manager as well I think. On a related note he is staying at Barnet as a director although if offered a job at another club I dare say he would take it. I think he took the high road as Barnet didn't want to sack him after what he did for the club so...

They have been on the fringes for so many years, and now when they look like they will make it, he goes.

I'm surprised as well. His Dad won the League with Derby, his son doesn't have a hope. The best Derby can hope for is getting to the Premiership now and then and maybe survive a year or two.

He would have been better to see Burton up, then maybe take a job elsewhere if he wanted to move on.

Big risk for Derby taking a one (non-league) club manger on. 

I think he will prove to be an excellent appointment. Loyal, successful, local and - despite his and his dad's connections with the other lot - a born-and-raised Derby fan. If the club show him the commitment that he will undoubtedly show them, he will get them moving in the right direction.

And Bedford, I'm afraid you're talking bollocks. I'm not saying they can win the Premier League, but Derby County are as big a club as (or bigger than): Blackburn, Fulham, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, Wigan, Bolton, West Ham...

I wasn't just talking about attendances anyway (impressive though Derby's support is). If you can point out to me the last time Portsmouth or Blackburn put four past Real Madrid in a European Cup semi-final I'll concede the argument.

Derby "were" a bigger club, not any more. If they get the right investment (which is hardly likely at the moment) then it could happen, they could maybe finish 11th/12th for a few years then come back down, i can't see it happening though.

Saying that, i'd love to be proved wrong.

Really? Dunno why but I hate Derby.

 I've never minded them too much, and liked the way their fans could still be seen in Bay City Rollers type clothing with scarves tied around their wrists well into the early 80's.

 Rod Thomas used to have his 75 championship winning medal on display at his pub The Foston's Ash...probably the last player to leave the Town and go on to win the League/Prem.

It probably has something to do with me and a couple of mates getting jumped there a few years back.
