Waikiki.
Bit commercialised, but we'll probably hire a car and have a drive and go to some of the other islands aswell.

Went there (more than) a few years ago:
- Kauai is lovely. Get a car and drive around Waimea canyon and the rest of the island.
- Maui I think was nice, but I can't remember much other than a bumpy landing (airport is between 2 mountains)!
- Big Island is good for a volcano visit
- Waikiki beach is big, commercial, expensive and spoiled. Spend as little time there as possible. Did a boat trip to see Pearl Harbour and looked at the hotel that they pan into from sea as Jack Lord turns around in the opening sequence to Hawaii-Five-0. Apart from that, Oahu has less to offer than the other islands.

I have to admit to being somewhat underwhelmed with Hawaii. Did Big Island, and frankly its like someone has ported some part of America into a tropical location.

The scenery is nice, but you can't really get that close to it. The volcano is spectacular from the air though, and so are the waterfalls on the east coast of the island, but you can't reach them by car too easily.

Its not the tropical paradise I expected. Nice, but I was expecting so much more.

Sushi's good there though.

Oh......

Title: Re: Honeymoon
Post by: pumbaa on Saturday, January 3, 2009, 21:37:21
You'll probably love it, but IMO, the smaller islands (Maui and Kaiui) are what you expect Hawaii to be like. Deliberately didn't go to Oahu/Waikiki as I'd heard very similar to what NMH stated. My expectations were way to high, but then I've been to the Maldives (twice) and that IS paradise compared to Hawaii.....

SanFran is nice though. Do Napa.

Easy. Loads of flights available. I think there are ferries as well. Not sure of costs though.

Our round the island tourist flight was $250 each - overpriced IMO. Had to be done though.

Have been looking at hire car prices, and can get a mid-size for $200 for four days. Is this cheap, or is it worth waiting to get one while there?

Waikiki.

Ive been and its fantastic. Waikiki is commercialised but the hotels that are on the beach there are something a bit special.

The best so called beach there is called hanuama bay (something like that) A small tip is not to bother going, we had to pay $3 to get on the beach and its way too crowded and there is nothing there thats worth the hassle.

Overall top place for a honeymoon. Have fun :)

Probably about the going rate Sippo. I'd be tempted to wait though, book one on the ground and see if you can negotiate a deal on the ground. Don't forget to take both parts of your licence. And don't get a PT Cruiser........

Serious? I will be using your knowledge! I think we are going to Paphos and looking for  asmall church and nice hotel to stay in with family? Any ideas?

Title: Re: Honeymoon

Paphos is ok but has got so commercialised now. Coral bay is probably the best place to go to. Outside of paphos but close enough. Not sure if they do church weddings over there for English people, but a typical cypriot wedding the bride and groom have money pinned to them from guests!! They are extremely religious over there.

Mostly Greek Orthodox, but there are Protestant type churches too. Not sure how many though, and they could well be the type that meet in school halls etc rather than nice buildings for all I know

Quote
Protestant churches
There are Anglican (Church of England) churches in each of the major towns, and a number of other English-speaking churches, mostly evangelical, including  Reformed Presbyterian and New Frontiers.   These congregations mostly feature ex-pat Brits (many of them retired) and other Europeans, and some Americans, although there are a significant number of international students, Christian workers, and even a few Cypriots.  They are generally fairly informal and welcome visitors.

In Larnaka, you can find:  Grace Church (New Frontiers), St Helena's (Anglican) and Larnaka Community Church.   There is also an International Evangelical church, Trinity Fellowship (Reformed Presbyterian), and a Baptist church.  In addition there is a Greek Evangelical Church, a Chinese Fellowship, and a Filipino Church.

In Nicosia, you can find: St Paul's Cathedral (Anglican), Nicosia International Church, Nicosia Community Church or New Life International Fellowship (evangelical).

In Limassol, you can find:  International Christian Fellowship which has several congregations, Limassol Church of Christ, or St Barnabas (Anglican).

In Paphos, there is: Paphos Christian Fellowship International;  in Ayia Napa there is:  the Anglican Church of South East Cyprus

Some of the evangelical churches in Cyprus (with contact details)
Anglican churches in Cyprus
Question answered?!

There are a bunch of hyperlinks on the actual page I took that from if needed: http://cyprus-life.info/religion_cyprus.html

St George hotel, halfway between Coral Bay and Paphos, hotel is great and it has a really nice church in it's grounds.

Be careful on the insurance - there'll be advice on t'internet, but It could end up costing much more than that - you don't want to be underinsured in the USA.

Booked through Enterprise so will be fine, incl is all the waiver insurance etc.
