That's funny actually as I thought that as soon as Danny Wilson was announced as manager.

Well not laugh out loud funny really, or even a little smile. Not funny at all really.

Nalis will retire (imo) If he can't cut it with us he's finished.

Does anyone know the length of Casal's contract?

Yes....

In the adver it says Nalis, Casal, Sturrock and Pook could be for the chop. Now Reg might be the person to know which Swindon player works out to be the most expensive per game not including wages. I guess with alot of undisclosed fees its hard to work out.

I mean say Casal signed for 30k thats 6k per game hes cost us thus far. Drysdale popped into my head he played 54 games and cost 340k. Thats £6,296 per game. Do you think anyone works out more expensive per game than that?

I guess Joey Bumboy must win if you think he cost us 800k for 60 games. £13,333 per game.

I think I may have answered my own question.

Surely Alexander at £300k has to be in with a shout!

37 appearances apparrantly which works out about £8100 a game.

Mind you we did sell him for £170k so that may affect that!

I'd keep him unless we have someone much better lined up to replace him. I wouldnt get him out and then hope we can bring someone else in because when Corr gets injured again we'll be left with just 2 strikers.

And therein lies the problem. Looking at his injury record it's easy to say "get rid", but you look at his scoring record (I haven't, I'm presuming) and you'd find it hard to let him go. A catch 22, if you will.

Although it was a while back I did all my geeky stats and Corr and Paynter over their careers both had roughly a 1 goal in 4 games ratio.

Paynter had kept this up over about 270 games, Corr over about 60.

If anything come the end of his contract we should sign Corr on a pay as you play deal!!

There lies the dilemma of Bazza, on the rare occasions he plays, he looks useful...just doesn't play often enough...so new contract very doubtful, but not impossible.

In Bobby Smiths day they were all at it. I heard he was shagging one of the directors wives. Tranter was at it with McHales wife and McHale was at it with someone who still gets a mention in the Adver occasionally. I think the fact that Peach was an alcoholic when he signed didn't help either. He was complete crap for us.

Quote
DANNY Wilson will target at least two defenders in the transfer window as he looks to “stem the flow” of goals against and boost Town up the League One table.

While Swindon have had no problems finding the back of the net at one end of the pitch, only Cheltenham and Crewe have conceded more than Town’s 42.

Wilson admits it is one of the reasons why his new side are hovering nervously above the relegation zone, and has already made enquiries as he looks to get fresh faces in before Stockport come to town in seven days’ time.

“I think the spark of bringing somebody in gives everyone a lift and that’s what we are intending to do,” revealed Swindon’s new manager.

“We’ve got a list of players and targets, and it will be the early part of next week when we sit down with the chairman and bounce a few things off each other.

“The wheels are in motion in one respect because we have already made the initial enquiries about the players to see their availability.

“We managers are very greedy and we are never satisfied, so the more the merrier, but the minimum we would look for is two or three.

“Whatever comes after that, we’ll have to wait and see.

“To concede 42 goals at this stage of the season is not ideal, and if you are doing that then you find yourself in the position that we are.

“You have to make sure you start stemming that flow, at the back in particular.

“We’re going to tighten up at the back and hopefully give ourselves a better chance of winning games.”

Wilson also admitted that he would be willing to release some of his fringe players, but as yet there has been no interest.

“We’ve had no phone calls yet about anybody, and we will only address it when that comes,” he said.

“The squad is important to us, particularly with the position we find ourselves in, but I think if players are not getting games then the opportunity may arise for one or two to go out on loan.”

From the adver, looks like we're chasing defenders. I'm guessing a left back is the priority.

No interest in Swindon fringe players, you would think a few non-league clubs would be queing up for the likes of Sturrock, Pook, Marsahll and Casal, even if only on loan.

The Western Daily Press have the same quotes as the Adver but have editorialised a bit and mention a forward too - but no names.

Quote
Wilson insists the list is 'as long as your arm' but believes that an agreement to add two or three new faces to strengthen key areas is the most likely outcome of those discussions.

Wilson hinted that the additions will be made through the spine of the side with a central defender, centre midfielder and a striker all expected to feature on his shopping list.

Bob Monkhouse entertained the Swindon team after the 1969 League Cup victory over Arsenal.

We were unbeaten with entertainment following the game by Bob Monkhouse.

If Wilson is looking for a big forward, how about Kevin Kyle?
Played for Pools for the first half of the season, and just gone back to Coventry.
If Wilson liked the guy I guess he will be high up the list, whatever we think of him.

Kevin Kyle is flippin' shite, I would hate to see him play for us, the fact he's been capped for Scotland is a disgrace to the shirt.

We do actually need a good target man. Paynter holds the ball well and Corr can win the flick ons but we need someone who can do both. If we could morph Paynter and Corr we'd have a bloody decent forward for L1 level (minus Corr's injuries obviously).

Title: Re: The Epic Swindon Town January Transfer Thread.
Post by: Samdy Gray on Saturday, January 3, 2009, 18:22:52
You'd think with his build he should be, but he just not good enough in the air to be a good target man. We can lump the ball to him all we like, but 9 times out of 10 the defender will win it.

Title: Re: The Epic Swindon Town January Transfer Thread.
Post by: DV on Saturday, January 3, 2009, 18:25:07
because he isnt.

He's better with the ball at his feet because he can play a bit, I realise a target man can have the ball given to his feet but a STFC target man cant, its always hoof, hoof, hoof.

He links up play well so obviously players better facing the goal rather than having his back to it. Plus despite being pretty well built most of the defenders are bigger than him.

Steve Brooker on loan perhaps? A genuine target man, and a good footballer too.

Bristol City have just signed another striker so he'll be wanting some games.

cox being on his ass for the first goal recently against yeovil might give you a decent starting point

Think it was the season after Wilson left?

Brooker may be tied up with Doncaster though, think he was there then got injured. I'm sure they'd have him back. Bristol City have another fringe striker that would be worth a loan, John Akinde, who they signed from Ebsfleet. Tipped to go all the way to the top...

Brighton?

Brooker is a Doncaster player I thought.

I also think we've probably conceeded more goals from set pieces, defensive errors, goal keeping errors and midfielders not tracking runners before we get to our striker not holding the ball up.

Our first signing has to be a defender.

Just on the basis that I would have thought we have much more pressing needs. But then I didn't go to the past three games so maybe we do need one.

Meh! what do I know.

On a totally unrelated note, I just noticed this emoticon

Mooney being in the team obviosly didnt help his early carrer at Swindon...oh for a Mooney or Fallon at the club now.

Saw Gary Sawyer play a few times both for Exeter in the conference and Plymouth in the Championship. He's young but decent enough, played regular Championship football last season. I think he was a part of the Exeter squad that drew at Old Trafford (that has no relevence to this but it's a nice side-note).

He never looked completely out of place in a Championship side.

Am I being unkind in thinking that our manager and board are procrastinating somewhat? I see other clubs signing players and read last week DW as saying “We’ve got a list of players and targets, and it will be the early part of next week when we sit down with the chairman and bounce a few things off each other..."

Or is this just the start of my early onset Bartmentia?
