I went in there the other day and it was empty, i think they've been struggling for a while. Pick n mix was amazing though.

That's my urine you're eating after I've been fondling the sherbet saucers with my piss soaked fingers.

Actually not surprising that they’re in trouble.  “Woolies”  doesn’t really have a place on the High Street anymore.  Virgin and HMV are usually better value for music and DVD’s, Game for all that gubbins and Toy’s R Us for the Glitters amongst us has a far better selection.

A pick & Mix franchise selling traditional old school penny sweets, US rubbish etc as well could be a winner.

Virgin was spot on in selling their Megastores to Zavvi because I'd imagine they'll be on there way sooner or later. As far as I know HMV is fine.

Sad because as a kid Woolworths was the shop for toys et al. But it's been largely shit for years and this doesn't suprise me one bit.

Woolworths has got worse and worse for toys and stationary, which was about all I ever bought there...other than Pick n Mix, which was immense! Cheaper than anywhere else and such a big choice!!!

Oh wait, Johno's brother works for Woolies...that ain't good...

Weren't Woolies just about to build or open as hop in Calne?  By the old kwik save site?  Bloody typical that is, I expect that'll stay empty for years now, or left half built.  Poor old Caln-ites.

Woolys will get through Xmas and then they may close!

Cant see the new one in Calne being built now?

Well the present landlords looking to leave, it's making no money and they're looking for someone to take it on, but as of yet no interest.  Rumour is it'll close, not sure when though.  You'll have to pop up the Talbot.

Woolies problem, well in my opinion - what do they sell? OK you can get toys, and CDs , erm, childrens clothes and er, papers, sweets and stuff.

What makes you think -oooh Woolies is the place to go for that rather than any other of the hundred shops that do similar things with a bigger range or better prices?

It's sad for sure.

Spoke to one of the Trottmans in the shop yesterday......Shop still makes a good profit...no rent for the shack!
Somebody has agreed to buy the land and buildings and build new shops and flats but he reckons they wont now the credit crunch has bit.
That fruit shop in the precinct has closed as well....

Oh yeah I forgot about the Woolies in Calne - Oh my god I walked through the precsinked (sp) for the first time in years the other night - scary stuff! Trotmans is an insitution - I always used to go in there with my Grampy!

Oh Jan I saw some of your lot in the Kings a couple of Sats ago - Christ like was to quote Dave Byrne "like a mourge"

woolies problem is pretty much the same as countless others, the death of the high street. Main guilty party to this is tescos.

Daughter works in Swindon Woolies, despite all the promises a lot of them never got their pay into the bank today!  They reckon it is a clerical error, affecting an awful lot of people.  Suspicious I think.

Let's face it, Woolies is shit - not much better than a pound shop!

They sell shit, pikey products like you see on QVC (other than CD's etc) and the decent stuff they sell can be bought from other places for less.

OK some people will lose their jobs but Woolies will be no great loss to the British shopper.

Quite... Speaking of TV channels like QVC, this woman came into work trying to get some Swingin' Sixties compilation and couldn't get past the fact that I hadn't seen the advert on price bid tv.

Do you mean Price Drop or Bid? They're owned by the same people and quite similar.

They're all ace though. Not much more having a relaxing afternoon watching the crafts special. It's like a massively extended super chilled out art attack. Fucking ace.

It was John the landlords official leaving do last Saturday, he's off to do something with a skiing firm. I know he's had a bit of interest in taking it over from a few parties, but it seems to have fallen through every time.

The place was only really making any money when Steve Lane was running it on behalf of the 'Bug and Spider' chain, and it's been going steadily downhill since he left.

It's been my 'local' for years, although since my kids were born I don't go down that often, but theres a couple of the regulars that will be lost without it.

Well i wasnt happy with them,i baught an advent calender there only to find all the windows boarded up.
On a serious note as a driver it will effect thousands of HGV drivers..Wincanton Logistics had the contract for the Swindon depot,a very sad state of affairs.
The knock on chain effect on the closure for small companys who supplied Woolies will be devastating.

Was only a crap joke leefer.

If someone wants a chocolate bar they will still buy one frrom somewhere else. It's probably more things like their stationery and posters / merchandising that are UK based, as well as all the logistics, like you said.
