Title: squeaky brakes. Post by: strooood on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 14:41:55 I have noticed, especially in the morning, that my breaks squeak from time to time. It isnt really consistent and it doesnt always happen, nor do they feel spongey under foot.
Anyone else had this and is it a case of getting new pads or something? Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: Chubbs on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 14:53:11 most likley yes strood.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: glos_robin on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 15:39:53 Brake pads are designed to make a squeak/squeeling sound as they come to the end of their life.....it's usually especially evident when turning slowly. I'd get your pads done asap before they start scouring your disks.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: strooood on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 15:43:18 yep turning slowly that's exactly right.
how much am i looking at? Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: glos_robin on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 15:50:21 Depends on the car and pads really wouldn't of thought £100 will be far off if its just the pair that needs doing. I'm presuming the squeaking hasn't been going on too long as then there's a risk you've damaged your disks and then you'd be looking around £250.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: Dozno9 on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 17:15:17 The squeeling sound is the air compressing between the back of the pads and the caliper.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: Samdy Gray on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 17:17:39 You can pick up a set of front pads for £15 a wheel and fit them yourself in less than an hour.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: leefer on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 21:48:22 I once saw Squeaky Breakes at the art centre...performing with Foggy Dew.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: Barry Scott on Monday, November 24, 2008, 16:40:51 My breaks always squeak and they're new. Well they're about 2 months and a few thousand miles old, but they're annoying as fuck. Apparently it's something to do with the type of brakes, but it still doesn't lessen the looks i get a traffic lights.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: Arriba on Monday, November 24, 2008, 16:43:04 apparantly the modern day brakes pads dont have asbestos in them which can add to squeeking.dont know how true this is but i've been told that by a few people.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: Lumps on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 10:13:20 Even brakes with new pads can squeak in cold damp weather, especially if you park overnight on the street rather than tuck your car away in a nice warm garage. If after a bit of driving when they've warmed up and dried out they're still squeaking then your pads probably need replacing. If you start to hear a horrible grinding noise of metal on metal when you brake you've left it too late.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: leefer on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 10:27:00 Or even if you drive into a lampost theres a good chance youve left it too late.
Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: Bob's Orange on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 11:25:39 Whilst we are on the subject of cars, my windscreen wipers have stopped working, I believe it is maybe just a fuse that has blown as everything else works perfectly.
Anyone know where the fuse box in an Audi A3 is? Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: @MacPhlea on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 11:46:41 Fuck changing them, a quick spray of WD40 will stop the squeak - it worked on my mates car for about an hour until the stupid fucker hit a lorry and died...

Post by: magicroundabout on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 16:10:28 Well the fecking battery is in the boot, under the spare tyre so its probably handily placed there!! car companies always put them in the most easy to reach places!!!!!!! Title: Re: squeaky brakes. Post by: Bob's Orange on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 17:02:42 car companies always put them in the most easy to reach places!!!!!!! Well Audi seem to not want people to access the battery as it is also in a box which has 4 screws which you can't get off with any bog standard tools. I had to get the bloody thing jump started by an Audi geezer with some special machine and then the garage recharged the battery. |
