Title: Technical Help Required. Post by: herthab on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 09:15:00 My laptop keeps freezing up. It only happens when I'm online and it doesn't always happen.
I've run avg antivirus and it shows no threats. What can I do? Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: pumbaa on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 10:09:49 Defrag. Download CCleaner and run it (also includes a registry cleaner as well). Try that first, if not then hope that jj or SiPie can help!
Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: herthab on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 11:06:27 Cheers Coxy. JJ installed CCleaner, but I've never bothered to run the registery part.
I've done it now and also checked the disk (It didn't need defragging) so hopefully it will stop the problem. Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 11:41:24 Do you get a blue screen with an error message aka the blue screen of death (or as more geekier people such as myself would type 'BSOD')?
WHat operating system you running and what are you using to browse the net? Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 11:42:21 And how do you connect to the internet. ASDL/cable modem straight in to usb, through a wireless router?
Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: axs on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 11:43:48 and what did you have for breakfast?
Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: herthab on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 11:46:39 Modem into usb.
I don't get any messages, the thing just freezes and I can't use the mouse, or keyboard and have to just power it down. Operating system? Would that be Windows XP? Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, November 23, 2008, 11:53:08 Yes windows XP. What web browser are you using? Does it happen on particular websites or random ones?

I use Firefox. It happens on random sites. Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: flammableBen on Monday, November 24, 2008, 07:42:44 Do you leave your laptop plugged into your usb modem all the time and it only crashes when you're browsing the internet, or is that you only plug it into your modem when you are browsing the internet?
Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Monday, November 24, 2008, 07:43:58 what the fuck are you doing up at this time ben? or are you going to bed?

It's plugged into the modem all the time, but I only go online when I'm browsing. Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: flammableBen on Monday, November 24, 2008, 08:13:35 what the fuck are you doing up at this time ben? or are you going to bed? I normally get up about this time. Try and make the effort not to end up in the classic nocturnal trap of the layabout. It's plugged into the modem all the time, but I only go online when I'm browsing. What do you mean online when you're browsing. Do you turn on/enable the modem every time you open your browser and then turn it off again when your done? Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: herthab on Monday, November 24, 2008, 08:16:56 Sorry if I appear a bit dim (I am).
My laptop is only switched on when I'm using it. The modem is permanently plugged in. I have to click on an icon on my desktop to go online, at which point my modem lights up. Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, November 24, 2008, 08:20:17 Is it only on particular websites that it freezes? Could be an out of date Flash player.
Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: herthab on Monday, November 24, 2008, 08:24:59 It seems to freeze randomly.
Title: Re: Technical Help Required. Post by: Peter Venkman on Monday, November 24, 2008, 10:25:35 Sounds to me like the memory has probably unseated itself or got dusty Steve, either that or the processor is overheating and casuing lock ups, make sure its not too hot, if it carries on I will pop over next week and have a look for ya mate.

Download the latest version and do an install. If that doesn't fix it I think setting up a new profile within firefox will. You'll have to migrate your user profile but that's easy. |
