Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Thursday, November 20, 2008, 20:41:03

Not a double op but i know someone who was shot through the knee and now has a plastic one. It keeps clicking out and he has to get it replaced every 2 years or so. Might have advanced since his original one as he got that in the 1st gulf war so they might just have to fit one like the original.

My mum had one knee replaced, her neighbour both.  I can't remember if the neighbour had both together or not, sorry.  But, I do know that my mum worked hard at the exercises and that really paid off.  A bloke in her street didn't do this and now walks with a limp.  So the best I can say is, once the op is done, exercise hard, swear a lot (it's painful), and exercise hard again.

Good luck.

I take it this is your way of saying you don't want to play football in July then? ;)

i got told that knee replacements are easier to do than my cruciate ligament. and they take half as long to recover from.

both together would be a bummer but if they're succesful etc then it'll have been worth it

My mum had hers done back in June as well (just the one) cartilige completly worn away i was basically bone grinding on bone.  So they replaced the whole knee and shes a whole lot better.  As said above, you've got to do the exercises to make sure mobility comes back.

That's what you get for riding around on mopeds chanting Swindon songs at pedestrians...

On a serious note, both my Nan's have had knee replacements. It's a bit of a struggle for the first month or so but I'm sure they give you lots of nice painkillers.

Surely they wouldn't do both together ?  Look on the bright side, they won't get the wrong one 1 (first time)

My mother in law had hers done one at a time in Spain, (where she now lives). Apparently she is now far more mobile than she has been for years.
My mother needs it doing but is worried about it & I have told her to get it done. !

If its at GWH?  I should find religion fast if I was you.

I went in for a simple op on my hand.

They forgot about me in pre op.

Then I Nearly died on the slab because of Blood pressure complications, despite being thoroughly tested before the op.

Wrong pain killers afterwards.

Finger still bent and twisted.

Still it wasn't all bad news.  They kept the council house element out so there was no egg throwing going on.

Not replacement knees, but I have had both my hips replaced (and at the GWH), no problems and no pain - I do set the scanners off when I pass through them at an airport!  Two years ago today was when I had the first one done!

I'm glad you had a happy story for Don because on rereading my little tale it seemed a tad depressing and I didn't even mention the superbug that is rife in British hospitals, or the sickness bug that starts in January and finishes around July.  :(

Yeah, everything did go quite smooth for me, I know other people have had problems.  Incidentally, is it true DRS only got this problem because of cornering too low on his moped and rubbing his knees on the road! ;D

Usually to get your knee down, first you have to have your arse up.  A dead give away is, does DRS have heomoroids? (sp)

Your be fine it's a straight forward operation and your be at home in a few days,I had both hips done at the same time a few years ago, they usually get you up on your feet the next day or the day after with a walking frame or crutches.

I found the worse bit being the morphine makes you itch like fuck.

It's well worth getting it done.

Could he play before?
Seriously, if you are having complete knee replacements I think you may have to stick to running the line or shouting abuse at former teammates!

I used to design replacement Hips/Knees etc for Biomet (based in Dorcan), Usually, if you get fitted with a new knee/Hip you might have to get it replaced every 5/10 years. But as with everything, everyone is different.

GWH get their implants from Biomet, so the chances are you will get a knee made and polished off in Swindon, Prob by a guy called Rodney. Incidently, the Engineering manager sits in the Don Rogers Stand! (well he used too, It was over 2 years since I worked there!)

Would you trust a knee made by someone called Rodney. First thing I thought was Only Fools and Horses.

Sure it'll be fine though.  :)

I know a bloke called Steve that makes joint replacements and prosthetics. I'll see if he'll be making yours and tell him to put some metal shards in them or something.

A mate of mine has had both his knees replaced one is plastic not sure what the other one is.

He still plays football at a pretty decent level but he is a goal keeper. Whats caused the knee problems? anything in particular?

If I play alot of football on hard ground my left knee cap hurts a bit but Doctor just said it was natural wear and tear and it was normal. I've cut down the football. I cant have played more than 4 times in the last month and my knee has been giving me all sorts of problems the last couple of days.

At your age Deev!

I know, its bloody awful.

I went to the Doctor and he said it was normal! Normal for a 23 year old to play an hour of football on astro turf than have sharp stabbing pains in his knee which hurts to bend and he struggles to get up the stairs, right normal that is...

Cheers Russ, silly question can you play football after

No you wont im afraid, if you do and bugger them up you may end up crippled and wheel chair bound,I think the life span is between 15 to 20 years if you cut down on the wear and tear of them.

One dodgy tackle and you could be crippled for life,Im afraid you got go careful from now on,depending on what you do you may have to change certain aspect's of your life.I was advised to use crutches when going out the house all the time, this takes the strain off my hips, that wont happen to you tho as i had other complications.

Im not sure about knees but with hips i think your hips can be replaced 3 times at the most, everytime they replace them they shorten the bone they attach the replacement to.

I would't advise running either or anything that would put pressure on your knees, the hospital will advise you what or not to do.

Sadly my sunday league football Career ended very soon affter about 4 matches

Anyway all the best with the operation.
