Title: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: michael on Sunday, November 2, 2008, 01:38:59 So far, 2 away hat-tricks in one season. Has that ever been done before by a Swindon player?
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this kid is way better than Sam Parkin ever was. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: deltaincline on Sunday, November 2, 2008, 02:03:27 So far, 2 away hat-tricks in one season. Has that ever been done before by a Swindon player? I've said it before and I'll say it again, this kid is way better than Sam Parkin ever was. Cox is way better than Sam Parkin, and then some. His pre-season goal against Fenerbahce will have alerted the brighter scouts and managers in the FL and the Prem to his talents. His form, goals and general attitude since then will have alerted the minnows and wannabees. No fucking way he'll be with us after January. I say again; if we get less than £2m for him when the bigger clubs come in, we'll be regarded as a selling club with no bollocks for a promotion fight. When he goes, I hope Malpas and Fitton have a suitable candicate lined up to replace him. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: michael on Sunday, November 2, 2008, 02:10:50 Whatever we sell him for is more to do with market forces than whether Malpas or Fitton have the stomach for it. Don't kid yourself, we are a selling club anyway... but he is a mint player isn't he?
I wonder now if there has ever been a player to score 2 away hat-tricks in one season? Never mind in the space of just 3 away league games... Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Never mind in the space of just 3 away league games... Quote I'm thinking Coxy is the first player since Bill Stephens in 46/47 to score 2 away league hat tricks in the same season, although I haven't checked it. Dennis (Bullets) Brown scored 2 in successive seasons, which is rare enough....his 4 at Bormuff, a fond memory as I was there. We sold him soon after... On the match day thread. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: Batch on Sunday, November 2, 2008, 09:33:54 Lets be honest, Cox is too good for us. I can't see him being here next season, I'd be surprised if he was here after January.
His only weakness seems to be a bit of pace, not that he is slow and a bit of consistency, still misses a few he shouldn't. But 14 goals by Nov 2nd, wow! Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Gazza, AF has already said we'll need to sell someone, in an ideal world, we'd be back to the days when we could sell a full back like Kerslake King or Bodin, but aside from Morrison, who might attract a Tozer, Lukas type deal, namely a small sum upfront then something based on appearances, Cox is our only asset. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, November 2, 2008, 10:56:34 I think Ed Hadwin has made the point that he's scoring when he's not playing well also, although he'd be top scorer if he hadn't have missed some easy chances in some games.
He's the sort of striker we've lacked for years, has a bit more speed and agility to go with the confidence and eye for goal. He'll be here until the end of the season at least. Must be gutting to score 2 hat tricks but draw both games 3-3 I'm more concerned about the continuing doom mongering to be honest. Malpas is slowly turning it around so we have to turn our attentions to a comment our chairman made about selling players and running with it... Even though he probably meant younger players to Premiership academy teams/reserves. Why can't we enjoy one thing without instantly thinking of a negative? Every team in the Football League has a player that "will go in January" - until then, lets just enjoy the fact that he's a good footballer and playing for us! Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Every team in the Football League has a player that "will go in January" - until then, lets just enjoy the fact that he's a good footballer and playing for us! Exactly my feelings. Of course, if and when we sell players and see how it affects the team, where it's reinvested and how that pans out, is when I'll kick up a fuss (or not!). The last couple of sales have been really good business imo. Tozer disn't look as promising as Morrison (in my opinion) and I'd rather have our current strike duo than Lukas, as much as I thought these players were decent prospects. With proper investment, we could be churning out these sorts of players each year and be able to keep a few too. This doesn't mean I won't be disappointed to see decent players go, but if it benefits us in the long run then so be it. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... As I only saw him play a handful of times. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: RobertT on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, 19:35:29 Didn't we sell Kerslake to pay a tax bill during our Halcion days? why get so hung up on potential sales, any half decent player in our team right now will go within a few years, it's the way of things for a club our size. At least now we might actually negotiate good deals and only when they suit us, that's the difference, the only difference with years gone by.
Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: chalkies_shorts on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, 20:20:39 If we're doing our job properly then we've got to expect a number of bids to be made in January and have a list of replacements lined up. If the bid is big enough then adios Coxy and hello new boy. If the bid isn't big enough then unless he has a drop in form ( which is unlikely ) then we sell him in the Summer. Either way he won't be here next season and good luck to him. Its what clubs like Swindon do and always has. As Rich says lets enjoy him while he's here. His attitude on the pitch is forst class and he has sufficient arrogance / self belief to play for a Fulham / Wolves type team.
Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: STFC Bart on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, 22:57:05 Its the replacements that worry me to be honest.
Malpas signongs over the summer have been suspect to say the least (3 of them he wants to loan out). With Cox it aint just the goals but assists as well. Take his goals and assists out of our team and we would likely be rooted in the bottom 4. This is why it is vital to get in an adequate replacement. Would like him to be here till the summer, but can see him going in January-Likely for an "undisclosed" fee Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Simon Cox Brezovan and Ifil.....sell them and it will be crowds of 4000 thousand next year in LGE2. End of the easiest bit of buisness ive ever discussed If Cox is reasured we will get a few assets that will turn his hat tricks into points that take us up...why would he leave? Dont agree at all. Brezovan has been pretty shit for a year. I honestly dont care if we sell him, he's never been the same since his injury and people who rate him very highly are just living off the memory of him pre-injury as far as I'm concerned. He's not "the best keeper in the division / outside the premier league" (i know you didnt say that, but others have) its touch and go if hes the best keeper at STFC. Ifil has been up and down and appears to have the mental stength of jelly. We all know he can be quality, but you have to ask the question why a now experienced defender can let his form drop off so badly and fairly regually. Its not just malpas, its happened plenty of times before. And the trouble is when he's off form hes a fucking liability. Theres very little middle ground with him, he's either quality or terrible. The fact is although he's put in some man of the match performances, goal saving tackles etc he has also cost us a fair number of goals in his STFC career. The good probably outweighs the bad but Part of me is starting to think we'd be better off betting a steadier centre back in who wouldnt be capable of the highs but would not produce so many lows either I dont believe selling either of those 2 would have a massive impact on our season, certainly not enough to take us down. Cox however is far and away our most important player currently - due mainly to his consistancy. Macca could run him close on his day but goes missing to often. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... If it gets to the point where he's publicly stating that he wants to go, then I think we'll give in sooner rather than later. Not sure it's too much of an unlikely scenario come transfer window time either.
If he does go a replacement isn't going to be easy to find, and not just as a dig at Malpas. Even with some recycled transfer cash to spend, January isn't ideal if you're looking for someone on form. Not sure Swindon have the signing power to reciprocate a cox leaving scenario with a top scorer from a league two club. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: my-velocity on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 12:58:41 So we sell Ifil...then Morrisson goes to some premier league club and plays for the reserves for the next couple of years. We'll be reate stuffed then.
People comparing Cox to Parkin need to think, if Cox goes in January it's a bit of a cop out as he wouldn't have even completed a season with us. Parkin was stronger, smarter and more loyal than cox has been for us since coming. Still not happy with Malpas and some of his god awful decisions, needs sorting out asap. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: Rich Pullen on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 13:02:40 Stating his highly ambitious desire to play for Liverpool one day - how has Cox been less loyal than Parkin? Give the guy a chance before assuming he's off in January/Summer.
Cox plays every week, scores most - talks of the importance of his team mates instead of talking about himself. Cox has done alot of growing up since his first STFC interviews. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: dell boy on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 13:21:04 Cox always looks to the fans when he comes on the pitch and off and applauds.
Whoever he plays for in the future, be it Swindon or a higher club I'm sure he will always give 100%, not only is he a great crowd pleaser, he is a good team player as well. His scoring record for us must be up with the best this club has ever had. What a gem of a signing. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: DV on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 13:35:15 Exactly leefer if they are serious in getting to the CCC in 3 years (which was stated) selling your best players is not the way to do it. I'm sure somewhere Mr. Fitton also said he wants the club to be stable which may mean we have to sell players to balance the books. It isnt as black and white as sell him or dont sell him is it Bart. You should bloody know that if we do sell him in January then it will be for good money which will go towards keeping our club running. If we didnt sell him and kept buying players and ran up debt then you'd be moaning about that Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: Arriba on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 15:06:10 strikers that score goals will always be watched.
we have to accept that with coxy. if he stays,he stays.if he goes it wont be a surprise and it will mean he's done the business here. paynter deserves alot of credit also.his link up play for alot of the goal has been superb.they really are working well as a pair. Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: Simon Pieman on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 17:41:53 Paynter is one player I think has grown in confidence and done better under Malpas.

Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: Power to people on Thursday, November 6, 2008, 08:26:09 There are other strikers in this league that are scoring goals, and being watched the strikers at Leeds & P'Boro to name a couple - Beckford and Mackail Smith, Leeds have to balance the books and would not surprise me if their top scorer went in Jan, while P'boro are in a simular situation to us where they don't need to sell but may do if they get offered a silly price.
So it is worth remembering while Cox is scoring goals he is not the only one at this level doing it. Cox I suspect will only be gone in Jan if a club from the higher reaches of the championship comes in with a silly offer that is too good to turn down otherwise if he stays until the summer he will be worth more and there will be more clubs interested thus trying to get an auction going Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Quote Cox: 'I want to stay' 9:10am Thursday 6th November 2008 Comments (4) Have your say » By Gareth Moorhouse » SIMON Cox has assured his adoring Swindon Town fans he is in it for the long haul at the County Ground, after rumours linking him with a move away from the Wiltshire club. The striker, pictured below, has been a revelation since his permanent switch from M4 rivals Reading in January, with 14 goals to his name already this campaign. Saturday’s hat-trick at League One leaders Scunthorpe prompted fresh speculation Cox could soon be snapped up, but the 21-year-old insists he has no desire to leave. “I will stay at Swindon Town as long as I am allowed to stay,” Cox told the Advertiser. “If I am offered a new contract at the end of my current one I would be happy to stay at Swindon. “I know I will get a fair crack of the whip here and I am really enjoying my football. “For me that’s the most important thing. “The only time I would leave is if somebody put in a ridiculous offer and Swindon agreed it was the best thing for them as a club. “That would be the only reason I would leave, not because I want to.” Town boss Maurice Malpas stated on Tuesday he would sell Cox “over my dead body,” as he looks to hang onto his star asset. The player admits his current goalscoring form could attract interest from Championship clubs, but Cox is determined to reach the second tier of English football with his current employers. “If a bid does come in then that’s out of my hands,” said the League One PFA Player of the Month. “Whatever happens is down to Swindon Town and anyone that might come in for me. “If I was to leave and go to a club with the same amount of strikers as Swindon, I could be bottom of the list. That would be going back to the same situation I had at Reading, and I don’t want that. “It’s never 100 per cent sure that you will be starting, but at least here I am playing regular football. “We seem to have turned the corner lately and hopefully we can keep moving forward as a team and as a club. If we keep doing that, hopefully better times are ahead and one day we will be in the Championship.” Cox has now turned his attention to gunning down non-league Histon in Saturday’s FA Cup opener, though he admits he may need a little help from his friends. “I might be a marked man on Saturday, but that will probably be a good thing for the team,” he said. “If two or three players are closing me down that gives more space to Billy and the other boys. “We have plenty of players in the team who can hurt Histon, but we have to match them for effort. If we do that we should have enough quality to come through.” Title: Re: Simon Cox my lord... Post by: Bogus Dave on Thursday, November 6, 2008, 13:16:16 He's definatley of in january now.
