My ex sister in law lives nearby so I've been to Histon, quite a few times, its about like Purton is to Swindon..a school, a few pubs, and a history of inbreeding.

It's also cold and damp at this time of year....we're running out of time for our loss to a non league side in each decade since the 50's. If we come through this unscathed it will be a surprise....

Oi! There's nothing wrong with us Purtonians.

Indeed not...Purton is a fine place noted for its church with a tower and a spire. Strangely there are only three examples of this arrangement in England....another being Wanborough.  The third is Ormskirk in Lancashire

Thanks for that Reg

Years ago I was doing some research into local prehistoric sites and decided there was some kind of evidence for Wanborough church being built on perhaps a stone circle.

So I got in touch with the Wilts Archaeological Service to see if they had any knowledge of this possibility....they came back with a big no.

Recently I chanced on this quote from the Hammerman Poet....Alfred Williams, written in the 19th Century

"Here, according to well-maintained tradition, stood an old heathen temple, used by the sun-worshippers; and here, on the identical site, stands the grey old church today, the tower and steeple of which rise high above the valley, and are visible for many miles in the country round about"

Must go and have another look.

With reference to A Williams Reg his Book On The Inside is brilliant, lived in South Marston and sadly died young through bad diet....his wife died young as well i believe, his story give us modern day Swindonions a real insight into the railworks.

Very true, life was hard back then....my grandfather who was also born in the late 19th century, worked as a trade unionist and socialist, to try and improve the conditions of those "inside"

What route you taking Ralphy....I always reckoned on more like 2 .5 to 3 when I used to go to the ex sister in laws, that being from Swindonia.
