Title: BBC Wiltshire Radio
Post by: Reeves for King on Sunday, October 26, 2008, 20:25:38
I haven't posted on here or been to a game for a while but was back from uni this weekend and listened to us on Wiltshire Sound, for the first time this season. I just expected it to be like the old days when they did a proper job. But what I actually found was some football and random bits of music, how long's this been going on? Yes I know it wasn't loads of music but still, I don't listen to a football programme to listen to music. I thought the BBC were supposed to be the 'godsend' after Brunel's shite music but I am sorry but football and crappy music do not mix, does anyone know of an explanation for why they've started doing this?

Sod off, they played Flight of the Conchords which is ace.

Brunel was shit mainly because the commentary was so awful. Anyway, you watch Sky or Setanta and you get cunting adverts at every opportunity. Music can't be worse.

People went over-board about Brunel, the content wasn't any worse than BBC Swindon.

People just wanted a ruck back in those days.

:)

Yeah we've got Malpas nowadays. Although if he goes and we get a competent manager in, I really do worry about what we'll have to moan about...

I like the old fella that does the inbetween bits during games.

He likes Ska and mentions the TEF lots.

Admirable defence of Brunel (well, it was attempt), but frankly compared to what BBC RS were serving up previously, the Brunel product was far worse. I know Ed Hadwin has his faults as a comentator, but the early days of Brunel were cringeworthy - the commentators (Nigel Turner and Arthur Hunt, who seemed to take over as the season progressed) were absolutely clueless and couldn't even recognise the players wearing Swindon shirts FFS. No build up, quite often the commentary would start several minutes into the game as we the listeners enjoyed Smashy and Nicey FM.....shocking!

I agree with the OP that the service BBC is now offering is inferior to what it used to be.

At least those Town fans that have the cheek to live outside Swindon can actually hear the match commentary, even if the show isn't what it once was.

I think BBC WS is great, even with the odd funny tune.
They actually read every text out too.

I wouldn't complain if I was abroad... Unless it was somewhere like Beirut or Merthyr.

Mark O'Donnell is quality - he is funny and plays top tunes. The commentary makes sense and I can get it on FM (even in Devizes!!).

Funny foreign language - in abundance

Funny National Dress - topless in sub-zero temperature, usually holding a bag of chips. That's jut the men.

Funny Climate - more miserable and cold than here.

Yep, all the criteria met, you are living in a foreign land.

Sorry, but the number of times I had to rely on texts from mates at away games because you literally could not tell what was going on with Brunel. Sometimes even when goals were scored, it would be a minute or so before you could tell if the bloody thing had even gone in - you'd get a load of hyperventilating guff like a chihauha humping a table leg, then they'd start rambling again, leaving you shouting at the radio "Well, did we/they score or not?", before they remembered they'd forgotten to mention what the end result was. I remember one particularly fine effort when they abandoned the game altogether and just did a full two-three minutes commentary on the Millwall fan in front of them who was apparently jumping up and down excitedly and "saying things we can't repeat on the radio". Given that he was doing that because we were putting Millwall under a spell of pressure, I'd perhaps rather have heard about that than be told they couldn't tell me what some nobend home fan bouncing up and down in front of them was shouting. Brunel were terrible, end of.

If we get Durham, does that mean we're in Europe then? Whoop whoop.
